Wasn't really into her first album apart from the single but this new one is fantastic. The production is really incredible especially on Miss You, Goodbye which is my favourite so far.

out of curiosity, looked up how this was doing on billboard charts & was kinda surprised to see only one song on only one singles/songs chart (hot r&b songs - "love 'em all" is #13). bc i can totally see some of these having radio longevity. suppose that speaks to how screwed up the radio formatting of r&b music is, as has been discussed w/ much greater eloquence elsewhere. the album itself is the #2 r&b album, which is cool.

in any event, goddamn this is still a powerhouse. "judge me," "how do you know," "maybe i should call" and "drake would love me" are my faves.

"Love Em All" is only in the 30s on the airplay chart, too. slowly gaining steam, though, and Rebellious Soul's 2nd single didn't hit radio until many months after the album's release, so I don't think they're releasing anything else just yet.

“I Got Rich People Problems”

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 6 February 2016 13:18 (eight years ago) link

the original title was apparently i ain't white, but i hope you like

how is this woman not universally praised and lauded

cher guevara (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 February 2016 13:24 (eight years ago) link

disappointed she backed down from that title

some dude, Saturday, 6 February 2016 13:32 (eight years ago) link

I'm not crazy about "Not A Little Bit" -- sounds like okay Keyshia Cole -- but can't wait for the album.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 6 February 2016 13:33 (eight years ago) link

"not a little bit" is melodically very satisfying to me, and the key change is terrific

cher guevara (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 February 2016 13:34 (eight years ago) link

the original title was apparently i ain't white, but i hope you like

This would've been about 1000% better.

This is great news, watching her battle to have her artistic integrity not compromised on her reality show is making me excited for what she's got up her sleeve on this one.

Every single person I introduce to her music becomes an instant fan, and not just in a casual way either.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 6 February 2016 19:57 (eight years ago) link

omg the original title!

i'm so glad she has the freedom to release without necessarily needing a big single blanketing radio beforehand

album now coming out March 25, i like "Ain't You" more than the other single

this album is wonderful. "mindful", what a vmic opener.

i love how her classicist leanings give us all these ornate arrangements and rub up against her never-appropriate lyrics

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 25 March 2016 12:22 (eight years ago) link

Yeah this album is great. Nightstand and Sleep Like a Baby are my favourites after my first play. Such lush production all the way through.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 25 March 2016 19:32 (eight years ago) link

yeah "Mindful" is a banger.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 March 2016 21:09 (eight years ago) link

"if it ain't love" is so immense

"make the bed" pretty much demonstrating she can do 80s teen romance synths as well as anyone else, i prefer it to anything on the CRJ album

cher guevara (lex pretend), Saturday, 26 March 2016 10:52 (eight years ago) link

80s teen romance
Yes, the way the album veers between this and (for want of a better word) adult soul balladry is wrong-footing in a really great way.

On first listen I am not finding as many great cuts as 2014's Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?, but I will listen to it again and again and see

curmudgeon, Monday, 28 March 2016 15:26 (eight years ago) link

This is a notch below Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? imo. The song titles give the game away: a few generic cuts.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 28 March 2016 15:28 (eight years ago) link

i don't know, i'm finding it a lot tighter than AWBAH - there's something more confident, more varied, more conducive to repeated listens so far. "not a little bit" and "if it ain't love" are some of the strongest radio melodies she's ever written. "mindful" is a strange choice of intro - it's a hoot but she doesn't follow through with anything else remotely like it so perhaps should've just been a bonus or interlude.

cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 10:51 (eight years ago) link

Those three are my favorites after "Make My Bed" and the extra track "Memphis."

his last mixtape was good but he's really overdue to do more stuff like this in a writer/producer capacity with less novelty autotune

"Robots are sexy as shit" - Big Sean (some dude), Friday, 1 April 2016 03:01 (eight years ago) link

the derulo track is so derulo-wave

i love it so much

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 1 April 2016 20:13 (eight years ago) link

i know it's reductive to describe that set of sounds as "derulo-wave" but it's like exactly what i imagined when i saw "feat. jason derulo" in the tracklisting

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 1 April 2016 20:17 (eight years ago) link

I like the track but he's expendable. Like, her part's imaginative and vivid enough without needing to hear from the guy responsible for the bed making -- and that the guy's Jason Derulo.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 April 2016 20:20 (eight years ago) link

he's expendable right, i barely even noticed him on it, i'm just talking about the sound alfred
