gay disco >>>> homophobic hipster house based on gay disco

burt_stanton, Monday, 5 May 2008 06:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't see how "Discopolis" and "I Feel Space" are supposed to be homophobic??

In the battle of impossibly anthemic house tunes this thread forgot about:

a) Dre; and

b) the following:

i) Armand Van Helden - Conscience (I will continue to mention this track gratuitously in unrelated threads until someone acknowledges me and/or it)

ii) Linus Loves - The Terrace (Stand Back)

iii) The Eternals - Wrath of Zeus

I think he might be comparing the two producers to groups like LCD Soundsystem or Digitalism.

LCD Soundsystem were supposed to have "masculinized" disco, and Digitalism have been quoted as saying some dance music is "too gay".

I don't get how someone as obsessed with disco as Lindstrom, and particularly Hi-NRG and Italo disco, possibly the gayest varieties gets compared to those two.

You'r tarring unlike producers with the same brush.

I don't have a fucking clue what Lifelike and Kris Menace's opinion about the whole thing is though, I'm guessing the ass is evidence of heterosexuality on the part of their marketing team at the very least.

Siah Alan, Monday, 5 May 2008 09:15 (sixteen years ago) link

The house track at the beginning of 44.33 really should put to bed the notion that James Murphy doesn't really like the effeminate side of disco. As should the Fabric mix!

Tim F, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I guess that was more the sentiment around the first album.

I haven't been able to get into much of their stuff tbh, I liked the parts of 44:33 that Prins Thomas used in his RA mix though.

Siah Alan, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Well they're the best things they've ever done* so it's hardly surprising Alan!

*give or take "Beat Connection" and "Yeah" if i'm feeling nostalgic for 2002/2003 - golden years...

Tim F, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway we should be talking about "Discopolis" and "Take Me With You" and...

I must try to find again the version of "Take Me With You" that has Madonna emerging in the background toward the end.

Tim F, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Their really should be more filter house/boogie and space disco crossover shouldn't there.

I want Da Funk + Sylvester - Do You Wanna Funk please.

Siah Alan, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Alright I'm tired, no more shitty grammar, I'm going to sleep.

Siah Alan, Monday, 5 May 2008 10:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Discopolis is ridiculously good considering how cheap it is. I just wish I could remember which obvious italo hit that melody is jacked from.

J@cob, Monday, 5 May 2008 11:07 (sixteen years ago) link

ANyway this signals that nu-disco will become the default eurotrash club sound which is excellent. That is a much better future than the one in which it's only of interest to vinyl purists who fap to pictures of Harvey's beard and the bra-wearing hordes jiggle to digitalism clones.

has this bit ever been used in a cop movie before? like an 80s michael mann flick? or a trailer for one?

s1ocki, Monday, 5 May 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

cuz it should be.

s1ocki, Monday, 5 May 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I've decided the only real way to balance this hetero appropriation of gay culture out karmicly is to recreate this video with a guy instead of a girl.

The ass would have to be of similar quality of course.

As soon as my beats get as big as Daft Punk I'll get right on that.

Siah Alan, Monday, 5 May 2008 18:24 (sixteen years ago) link

im surprised burt stanton, hipster anthropologist called discopolis 'hipster dance,' i always associated it w/ big cheesy club dance

deej, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i think burt stanton was the dude handing out Uniqlo catalogs in front of the brooklyn musem yesterday.

ian, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah I still love "Take Me With You", it has a different sheen to it than "Discopolis", though I still love that.

There's a total glut of this kind of record though, it's all I listened to for about 2 years!

Ronan, Monday, 5 May 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes Kano, I knew it was something obvious. Going out on a limb though, I reckon they started with the twinkles and built the whole thing from there. So it's not 'just' the twinkles.

Did we ever find this out people? I'm needing to know too.

I Feel Space. Have been wondering what this track was since I heard it on the Optimo space odyssey mix, and now I know!

Neil S, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 11:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, I clicked on that Discopolis video, and am now worried about being sacked for computer misuse!
