Oh, the show isn't 'about' an unlikely romance in anything close to the way Mindy Project or New Girl were, if that's what you're worried about.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 26 December 2014 15:19 (nine years ago) link

the show also gets better once they realise that jeff's strengths are not as a romantic leading man but as a narcissistic asshole prone to grandiose speeches. stick with it, it does get so much better.

bizarro gazzara, Friday, 26 December 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

the paintball episode in s1 was the real game-changer iirc

bizarro gazzara, Friday, 26 December 2014 20:20 (nine years ago) link

doesn't jeff accept being a narcissistic asshole prone to grandiose speeches at the end of… the pilot?

j., Friday, 26 December 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link

there was still a cute will they/won't they with Britta, and then they did and no one cared, hey what about Jeff & Annie?

i think Harmon was more in love with the Britta character than the audience (or any of the characters) ever was, and it became apparent by like the 9th episode that there was way more chemistry/fan interest in Jeff and Annie. and then they sidestepped the whole thing by pairing Jeff and Britta up in a secret non-romantic hookup way. i kinda liked how they handled what could've easily been a pretty tedious love triangle thing, at least until the pretty boring Troy/Britta relationship.

OTM.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 27 December 2014 03:13 (nine years ago) link

The breakthrough character is Abed, who understands that he lives in a tv show.

Vic Perry, Saturday, 27 December 2014 03:27 (nine years ago) link

Have never really given a shit about Jeff and Annie and was overjoyed when Harmon tied that one up. Whereas Britta gets funnier the dorkier she becomes.

I think Jeff wrongfoots a lot of people early on because the show seems to be setting him up as the cool guy when a lot of viewers think he's a twat, it takes a while to realise that the show thinks he's a twat too and gets a lot of comic mileage out of that.

Matt DC, Saturday, 27 December 2014 12:46 (nine years ago) link

Ha, maybe I like the early episodes so much because he always seemed like he was supposed to be a twat.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 27 December 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

"to me"

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 27 December 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

I mean, he starts out as a fraudulent disbarred lawyer who is trying and failing to cheat his way through a bottom-tier community college diploma and desperately hit on a woman.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 27 December 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

Still so much of the early Jeff stuff was about him being a reluctant leader who could tie the group together and make inspirational speeches. He took a darker turn later on.

Seen up to episode 19 now. Liking it more.

Jeff looks so much like British comedian Greg Davies.

Like how they kept up the creepy mascot.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 28 December 2014 03:49 (nine years ago) link

The stuff about the Dean's Dalmatian fixation was funny. But the best thing was the keytar with the screaming samples.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 28 December 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

annie's "no" scream is amazing

(曇り) (clouds), Sunday, 28 December 2014 19:33 (nine years ago) link

That joke about Paul Giamatti was a bit too cruel though.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 28 December 2014 20:08 (nine years ago) link

Like how they kept up the creepy mascot.

The show thrives on recurring gags, so you should often be delighted.

two weeks pass...

This picture looks so empty and it makes me sad. The cast has really thinned out.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:08 (nine years ago) link

That promo pic makes me want to actively avoid the show.

Let me help you out Charlie XCX fan (DJP), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:37 (nine years ago) link

I was looking forward to this. Now I'm not.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

Abed totally bringing the false joy.

This is really the last season, right? Gilliam Jacobs has a new show happening somewhere.

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:51 (nine years ago) link

i like everyone in that picture and am looking forward to the show but it definitely feels like a bummer that they're down to 4 of the original 7 core study group cast members.

some dude, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:51 (nine years ago) link

i genuinely don't think this season would be happening if Abed had said "five seasons and a movie" in that one episode.

some dude, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:52 (nine years ago) link

Does the Yahoo thing cost money?

jmm, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

xp that's very true

Also, I'll restate what I said previously. No Shirley, no credibility.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:55 (nine years ago) link

Yahoo is ad supported afaik.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 21:56 (nine years ago) link

Dan Harmon has just said, that as long as people like it, he will keep on doing it, up to season 20 or something. In a way, that was how it always should have been. The show is about communities, the insularity of the study group always made them seem like a bunch of assholes. But it's still sad :(

Frederik B, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 22:01 (nine years ago) link

According to the promo, Professor Slater is back:

https://screen.yahoo.com/community/

Which...yeah, that was a funny run in season 1. But as a full cast member?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 22:01 (nine years ago) link

i mean...she presumably still works at the school where the show takes place, they're not bending time and space or anything.

some dude, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 22:09 (nine years ago) link

why didn't they just shoot a promo pic with the new study group members? they have new people right?

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 22:48 (nine years ago) link

if so, the audience don't know them yet, so wouldn't feel warm and fuzzy to see them in a photo

i like everyone in that picture and am looking forward to the show but it definitely feels like a bummer that they're down to 4 of the original 7 core study group cast members.

the cast was always intended to shift and change if they made it past year 3 - it's the weird embattled nature of the production that's kept it so consistent

bob seger's silver bullet gland (sic), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 23:48 (nine years ago) link

reminds me of the pictures for the cinemax season of sctv when they were down to just flaherty, martin, levy and short

da croupier, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 23:56 (nine years ago) link

one month passes...

trailer singlehandedly renews my interest in the show tbh

DJP, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 20:20 (nine years ago) link

I will watch it, but I will miss Yvette SO MUCH.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 20:40 (nine years ago) link

It's ad supported, so only with your time. Glad I discovered there's a Yahoo Screen app for the Roku so I can actually peep this shit on a television.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 21:02 (nine years ago) link

not available outside the US

xp thanks for the heads-up, just got a Roku recently so that's great

Nhex, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 14:42 (nine years ago) link

not sure what sort of shady backroom contract adds a new application to my Sony Blu-ray player, but there's no yahoo! screen ;_;

They'll probably release one for the PS3 sooner or later. I love my Roku, though, and think everyone should have one. :)

Clay, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 05:28 (nine years ago) link

Considering the thread has been revived twice already this year, I'd say yes.
