maybe "the mighty fall" is a more agreed upon example of a failed experiment? not so much for the rap verse but for the fact that the rap verse is by big sean.

i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 18 January 2015 16:13 (nine years ago) link

SRNR is perfect all the way through tho

uberweiss, Sunday, 18 January 2015 16:14 (nine years ago) link

^ This is correct

, Sunday, 18 January 2015 16:14 (nine years ago) link

"Rat a Tat" and "Fame < Infamy" are both top tier, wtf

I will probably never like any of the guest-rapper tracks or recent singles tho (save for the lovably bonkers AB/AP title track)

Simon H., Sunday, 18 January 2015 16:32 (nine years ago) link

The Mighty Fall is one of the favorite FOB songs among my kid and his friends.

how's life, Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:00 (nine years ago) link

Although they thought the line before the Big Sean rap was "I want to lock you up inside and swallow, swallow the cheese!"

Anyway, I haven't heard this full album yet. I've been listening to the tracks that have been available via itunes and I'm not all that into them. Hoping this changes once I get some context.

My ranking of albums is probably like:

IOH=FAD>SRAR>>FUCT>>>>>TTTYG

how's life, Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:06 (nine years ago) link

tttyg feels like an almost entirely different band but idk i think it's one of the more perfectly composed pop-punk records ever

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:08 (nine years ago) link

wonder how many times i've expressed that opinion in this thread

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:14 (nine years ago) link

If I had discovered it after In Reverie came out, it would have saved my day.

how's life, Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:15 (nine years ago) link

Are you saying they copied saves the day

, Sunday, 18 January 2015 18:41 (nine years ago) link

Basically a repeat of my experience with 1989. Album that I've been looking forward to basically since the last one came out, been dreading since the first awful single, and landed in my iTunes on release day, probably never to be listened to again. A halfhearted attempt at radio-friendluness that leaves behind all the stuff that that made them melodically and lyrically interesting. They did it so well on the last record! Everything on that one felt like a single. Everything here feels like a b side.

New S-K today takes away some of the sting, but this record is a bummer.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 18:02 (nine years ago) link

Maybe everybody else will like it! I hope they do. It's definitely not for me though.

Just realized that this is the first album since FUCT to not feature any stunt casting.

american tail/american pie (how's life), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 18:05 (nine years ago) link

Eh, I dunno. I'm giving it a second chance on the trip home. Not as bad as I thought this morning. Still feels a little awkward in places. Gonna load it up on my kid's ipod when I get home. He'll probably love the hell out of it.

american tail/american pie (how's life), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 21:21 (nine years ago) link

Favorite Record annoys the shit out of me though. No compunctions about saying that.

EVERY HUGH JACKMAN HAS A VAN HELSING (some dude), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 22:20 (nine years ago) link

do not know how any band capable of producing american beauty / american psycho could be worth thinking about for more than 5 seconds much less listening to :(

EVERY HUGH JACKMAN HAS A VAN HELSING (some dude), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 01:03 (nine years ago) link

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 01:11 (nine years ago) link

I don't like "Uma" or "Favourite Record" but I remain pro- this album in general

Simon H., Wednesday, 21 January 2015 02:02 (nine years ago) link

just doing an actual faux surf rock Pulp Fiction thing with the music makes it all way more on-the-nose than the usual FOB lyric pop culture potpourri imo

cosigning dayo

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 02:42 (nine years ago) link

"uma thurman"'s resemblance to "misirilou" and "chick habit" makes it pretty much exclusively intertextual about tarantino soundtracks but i think it makes for a really invigorating and strange song, plus the munsters sample is p inspired idk

I think if I hadn't at some level decided that "more on the nose" = "better" I probably wouldn't have become such a FOB stan.

Tim F, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 04:01 (nine years ago) link

yeah but like...."Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner" didn't have a bow tied on it with an "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" interpolation or something.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 05:03 (nine years ago) link

I just watched them do Centuries on Fallon...how can such a nothing song have such a monstrous chorus? FOB are confusingly magical.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 05:42 (nine years ago) link

THE BEST

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 07:03 (nine years ago) link

What's the melody at the beginning of Centuries? Wanna say it's Dido's little ditty at the beginning of Stan but don't think that's quite right

lol

suzanne vega, "tom's diner"

Tim F, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 13:08 (nine years ago) link

No, that's not quite it. I think it's the I Dream of Jeannie theme.

I will check those out
