Okay, yeah, I might be wrong. I've never heard it, though.

John's may be right. But I think that most of my peers (age-wise) would recognize "Exit light, enter night"

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, I was no fan during their heydays, but I recognize the following because, well, who doesn't:

"they call us problem child...we are the youth gone wild"

"muskrat suzie and muskrat sam..."

"girls girls girls"

"i'll be there for you/these five words i swear to you"

"when the children sing/let the new world begin" (maybe not this one)

"easy operator come a'knockin' at my door"

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok, I know two of those.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

No, three. I just got the Bon Jovi.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I only really know the Skid Row and Motley Crue ones.

I learned to play drums by listening to Metallica.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I always thought they were a niche band: I doubt that as many people know the words to Metallica's "One" as they do U2's "One," or Joan Osborne's "One of Us."

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok, so I looked all these up. We have: Skid Row, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, White Lion, Def Leppard, and... wait for it... The Captain and Tenille.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

i totally knew all of those before reading kenans post. but that's because they were during my high school years. the prom song for my junior prom? skid roe (i prefer to think of them as fish eggs) "i remember you".

i did not attend.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Re: "One" vs. "One" vs. "One of Us" - I bet you're right, J., because I think Metallica's big with the Slavs and others worldwide who might not study the lyrics.

Re: Prom. I don't remember a single song from either prom. I remember the dinners beforehand and hanging out around Lake Calhoun, but that's it.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Those were my high school years, too, and I had long hair and wore Metallica t-shirts, but even *I* never learned the lyrics to "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

I don't remember much about Prom Night, either, as far as music is concerned. I remember I tried to get laid, but it didn't happen.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I didn't try to get laid and I think the song was "A Whiter Shade of Pale".

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

i know that the class song for mhs class of '91 was the devinyls "i touch myself". it was put to a revote after it won by a slight margin the first time around. it won in a landslide the second time around.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

And a niche band can still sell several million albums. Garth Brooks's No Fences has sold roughly the same number of copies as Metallica's self-titled, but obv caters to a certain demographic. ("Friends in Low Places" is the only song on that album that I know -- it's also one of maybe five country songs of the 1990s that I know.)

I think my Official Prom Song was "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, as it probably was for hundreds of high schools in the ten years immediately following the release of Say Anything. I also remember dancing to the Macarena.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the class before us got "In Your Eyes."

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

"don't you forget about me" was a pretty common one too. that's what my school had, anyway.

my prom was a total awkward waste of a hott dress, and i didn't even get a kiss.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Hot data on baby name trends on Ye Olde Blog, btw.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Our Prom there was "A Night of Religious Oppression".

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I went with this little punk rock girl as friends, and got my suit for $4.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 September 2006 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I rented the tux, whole bit. Sparkly blue cumberbund and matching tie. I will never dress that way again as long as I live. It was a very special night.

My mom's name is Estela. Only 1 L.

I didn't attend my proms. I don't know the themes or the songs. I wish I knew them.

I didn't get laid.

But you make up for it now by being a big slut.

Probably truer than you meant it to be.

sparkly blue cumberbund!

i got my dress for $20 from a thrift store. but it was awesome. except that the back seam split up to my lower back. so it was mended with staples, and thereafter wasn't particularly comfortable to wear.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Last nite we were supposed to have band practice and then hang out at the whirlaway but instead we skipped practice and I helped Ben assemble Ikea furniture.

I went with my best friend, who was basically my girlfriend for the latter half of high school, considering we went everywhere together and secretly fooled around, but for some silly reason we refused the label, which gave me license to talk about all the other girls I had crushes on, even though in retrospect it probably made her jealous (I was so dense I didn't understand why she got upset that I made out with Chris.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

My mom's name is Estela. Only 1 L.

There is an Estela on ILX with only one L. She is from Australia.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:15 (seventeen years ago) link

"Estella" would be pronounced es-TEY-a in Spanish. Thus, the single L.

My dad has always been of the opinion that she should add an L because it confuses so many Americans.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Two proms with two good friends - ones I didn't make a move on and who didn't make a move on me, though one of them (sassy) gave me her garter (or whatever the one part of it that goes around one thigh is called). The other one was sophisticated and Meryl Streep-like and talked about reading Colette, very old-school, and now she contacts the dead for a living. I found photos from our pre-prom dinner recently. I will scan one whenever I get the chance to scan the EZ-as-Michael-Mann-teen photo.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 11 September 2006 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Two proms, one with a good friend (who I had a secret crush on) and the second with my girlfriend at the time. Both times I wore thrift store crap and dyed my hair funny colors. A punk band played at one of these events.

Looking back I wish I had made a move on the secret crush friend and not ever dated the girlfriend in the first place.

Nice!

I recognized all of Jenny's quotes. I sang them as I read them. I doubt I'd recognize Joan Osbourne lyrics. Wait.. Is that the WHAT IF GOD WAS ONE OF US? Ok, never mind.

Two proms - one with the shortest guy in my class, which was worse than it had to be (He was so self-conscious that he never shared with me the pix his parents took of us in front of their rose bushes/ At the after party, he fell asleep and I had to sit beside him to protect him from these guys who kept trying to mess with him), the other one was with a big group of younger single girls (none of my friends my age were allowed to go without dates because it was Louisana and their moms were annoying)
Off to read about baby names.

John, did you go see Girl Talk on Saturday? The clips on PF looked hot. I wish I had the staying power to check it out after Shellac noodled me to death.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Nah, I didn't see Girl Talk. Was hanging out at EZ's pad with him and his roommates and thought about dragging L. and her friend along with me when 11:30 rolled around but ultimately decided I was more in the conversational mood than in the booty-jam mood.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

HA HA My sister has a MOM name. I guess my name isn't a mom name then? Huh. It's only dropped 4 spots.

Nick's stayed exactly the same.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:23 (seventeen years ago) link

My other sister dropped off the top 100.

HI! Where will THIRSTY THURSDAY be this week??

I recognized all of Jenny's quotes. I sang them as I read them. I doubt I'd recognize Joan Osbourne lyrics. Wait.. Is that the WHAT IF GOD WAS ONE OF US? Ok, never mind.

I just checked and I didn't see where Jenny posted any quotes. Am I missing something?

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think anyone quoted Joan Osborne.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeh, Jenny hasn't posted since 11:24 AM.

(xxxpost) One thing that I found interesting about Nick, though, is that I was looking at the data for 1975 and noticed that Nicholas was at #81, below names like Rodney and Shane and Keith, and I was all like "wha?" Cuz, you know, I think of it as a pretty common name among our generation. But that's because between 1975 and 1979 (when n/a was born), it jumped all the way up to #15. Interesting. I wonder why.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeh, Jenny hasn't posted since 11:24 AM.

I think she meant Jesse.

The only quote I recognized was the Motley Crue one.

Oh man, I cannot wait to get out of here and go hang out at the High Noon all night.

happy 9/11, everyone.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Monday, 11 September 2006 20:53 (seventeen years ago) link

When doing promo for the gig tonight I considered adding "if you don't come then the terrorists have already won" or something, but decided agaisnt it.

mmmmmrrmrmmmmmmm that IS clever, but if you're too clever you're abusing your freedom.
