Baroque & Philosophic Girl, Illusory EP. Darkwave/techno from a Japanese duo, on the Unknown Pleasures label from France. Roughly $5 and worth every penny.

Bandcamp hired a smart staff to create about 20 times the amount of editorial content that had been there previously, writing about music that had just been posted as well as parts of its deep and woolly catalog, in a feature called “Bandcamp Daily.”

Anyone reading this stuff on the site regularly? I see that M*rk M*sters, who co-wrote that experimental/avante rock column for Pitchfork , is writing for them a bit

curmudgeon, Thursday, 29 September 2016 20:25 (seven years ago) link

I'm writing for them too. Nothing I've done has been published yet (their lead times are print-mag long), but I just turned in a guide to the Axiom Records catalog - which is being reissued, piecemeal, on Bill Laswell's Bandcamp page.

stuff i've read has been really good, def seems like they are hiring lots of good ppl

The awesome New Zealand band Beastwars (kinda Kyuss-y, but more pummeling) put out their third album The Death of All Things - their first since 2013 - back in April, but I just found out about it today, so it's become my final music purchase of 2016.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Saturday, 31 December 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

Bought 7 albums from the Ohm Resistance label today. They do heavy, noisy, industrial-ish dub and drum 'n' bass; Bill Laswell appears on a bunch of their releases, and they put out stuff by Scorn and by the group The Blood of Heroes, which features Laswell, JK Broadrick, and others.

I got:

Submerged, Violence as First Nature (plus its bonus DJ mix disc, which is separate but pay-what-you-want)
Submerged, Before Fire I Was Against Other People
Submerged vs. Bill Laswell, After Such Knowledge, What Forgiveness?
Silent Killer + Breaker, Amongst Villains
Imaginary Forces, Filth Columnist
Imaginary Forces, Uppstigande

Gonna have to keep that in mind.

I develop a real taste for this stuff when the weather turns cold; I was listening to Electric Ladyland 6 walking around in the snow today, and somehow got back to this label (whose output I've known about for a while; I reviewed the first Blood of Heroes album for Burning Ambulance a few years ago).

I might be too easy of a mark for garage-goth bands with two female vocalists and a twang in their sound but I ran across this in someone's collection, checked it out and bought it three songs later.

The Resonars are a recent discovery, garage psych/power pop with great vocal harmonies worthy of The Hollies from Tucscon, been around since 1991.

They have their entire discography on cassette (and I presume any download) for $30:
https://theresonars1.bandcamp.com/album/the-complete-resonars

Compilation on Trouble In Mind from last year:
https://theresonars1.bandcamp.com/album/the-greatest-songs-of-the-resonars

Their 7 albums (possibly counting Butterscotch Cathedral side project) are consistently solid. My favorite is:

I have a couple of things:

All of our share from the Slum of Legs bandcamp will be donated to Right to Remain, a charity fighting to stop deportations from the UK.

I have a track on Rhinoceritis, which was already a charity comp, donating their proceeds to both Border Angels and Forward Together. It's full of Ladyz in Noyz goodness.

Meantime just a general recommendation: Violet Cold. Some dude from Azerbaijan who loves him his black metal, post-rock and shoegaze and puts it together pretty nicely. (Sure, post-Alcest etc., but still works.)

The ACLU thing was a nice success, they raised over a $mil.

I forgot to mention this, which also came out yesterday -- Finnish band who have evolved from shoegaze/space rock/Kosmische to full-on psych prog. Additionally, they also made their 2014 album Ujubasajuba Name your Price available, and their first album is free.

They're great, btw, I've pre-ordered (physical copies of) Ruination and Ujubasajuba already.

The ACLU thing was a nice success, they raised over a $mil.

People bought for over one million worth of music that day but ACLU is "only" getting 12% of that, the rest still goes to the artists, except for the ones who also decided to give their share that day (which amounts to about 400 labels/artists, so it's not negligible).
