Also, very worrying to me is that it seems like John Goodman could die any day now. Eeesh.

chevy chase looked worse, frankly

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 04:47 (nine years ago) link

yeah chase looked like he gained 40 additional pounds, but fuck him anyway

slothroprhymes, Monday, 16 February 2015 05:03 (nine years ago) link

I actually thought the celeb jeopardy standard bit was funny. Sean Connery et. al.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 February 2015 05:16 (nine years ago) link

Glad to see Fallon and Sanz called out for breaking.

nickn, Monday, 16 February 2015 07:03 (nine years ago) link

this is like... shoah long

FB comment: "Whenever Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake perform it's like watching the jocks dress up as Devo at my high school talent show."

shoah long, it's been good to know ya

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 February 2015 08:25 (nine years ago) link

JF (and Morbs' fb commenter) otm.

Bill Murray's re-creation thing was the only one that worked.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 16 February 2015 14:37 (nine years ago) link

i thought norm was funnier than ever. tbh i lol'd a bunch during this, and sure it was uneven at times but so is every SNL episode ever

Mordy, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:38 (nine years ago) link

Wasn't Eddie Murphy in this?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:51 (nine years ago) link

yep he just gave a "great to be here, enjoy the show"

rip van wanko, Monday, 16 February 2015 14:53 (nine years ago) link

murphy had what seemed like a ten-minute lead-up from chris rock, then came out for 60 seconds to thank the audience, then had a "live television moment"

i don't think murphy is anywhere near as loathed as chase but i do get the feeling that he's not exactly loved; his appearance had every hallmark of him and his agent stipulating that he had to be on stage effectively solo (save for a few seconds w/ rock), basking in applause and almost nothing else. god forbid they put murphy into a skit like the other peons.

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

Apparently even he has standards.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:25 (nine years ago) link

Not saying his appearance was remarkable, but I'm glad he didn't come out in a Gumby suit or Buckwheat wig like the other cast members reprising their greatest hits.

The Jon Lovitz RIP thing was great. It was just as funny when Dave did it though.

pplains, Monday, 16 February 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

Jeopardy and weekend update p much the only funny things. Murphy appearance was ridiculous.

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

Odenkirk appearing kinda made me hope he gets to host

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:43 (nine years ago) link

needed more of things like bill murray singing jaws

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 February 2015 16:45 (nine years ago) link

yeah bill murray really committed to that, god bless him

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 17:00 (nine years ago) link

although oddly they staged it in a hallway; had they used up all the stage space?

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 17:01 (nine years ago) link

whole murray thing felt super improvised to me. like it wasn't rehearsed at all, they just told bill to sing about jaws.

review:

http://www.vulture.com/2015/02/snl-40-was-patchy-but-it-had-moments-of-magic.html

btw whatever you think of Simon, his initial appearance (3rd episode?) with Garfunkel in '75 played a huge role in drawing attention to the show.

touch of a love-starved cobra (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 February 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link

when is the piscopo comeback gonna happen

goole, Monday, 16 February 2015 17:43 (nine years ago) link

Besides Eddie (and the members of "the ringer season"), Piscopo was the only representation during the whole night of the Ebersol years right? They were lean years, sure, but not entirely devoid of funny people I'd have liked to have seen.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 February 2015 17:49 (nine years ago) link

I remember the 15th anniversary SNL special (which, iirc, was their first such star-studded retrospective/reunion dealie) and Piscopo was in the audience wearing a sleveless tux to show off his weird-ass body-built arms. And it wasn't meant to be a comedy bit. I think he even flexed when he realized the camera was on him.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 16 February 2015 17:51 (nine years ago) link

xpost Jim Belushi

I played with the app a little last night and it's fun, but def a big step up from shitty YouTube content but a big step down from actually having full episodes. A mix of stuff you'd thought you'd never see again, stuff you've seen a dozen times, and stuff that's not there for whatever inexplicable reason (one of these days I will prove that I saw a circa-2001 sketch loosely about Melt-Banana, but that day is not here)

Huge points off for providing the first 30 years in the wrong aspect ratio

take it to the AV Club buddy

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Monday, 16 February 2015 17:59 (nine years ago) link

Word, gotta pad those two grafs out to 8 or 9

This show stinks, always has. Get out a DVD set of one of those early series with the 'classic' cast and even those episodes are 75% crap.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:03 (nine years ago) link

Ooh yeah agree murray was good too. And seemed v spontaneous.

Xxp

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 February 2015 18:07 (nine years ago) link

Is there not an Android version of the app? Because fuck an iPhone.

^^^this, ugh

My favorite part of the show though is getting to search by cast member and watch stuff from Sarah Silverman, Ellen Cleghorne, Terry Sweeney, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, etc.

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:27 (nine years ago) link

did J L-D make an appearance last night?

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link

I did lol that dennis miller and victoria jackson were both awol

Οὖτις, Monday, 16 February 2015 18:34 (nine years ago) link

well they wouldn't want to be in the belly of the liberal beast, would they?

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Sarah didn't seem to mind.

pplains, Monday, 16 February 2015 18:41 (nine years ago) link

Palin, not Silverman.

Also Martin Short and Billy Crystal were Ebersol cast members.

I remember that 15th anniversary. Mary Tyler Moore came out with "Eddie Murphy's Entourage".

pplains, Monday, 16 February 2015 18:43 (nine years ago) link

sarah palin doesn't mind anything as long as it extends her media exposure; that they would even give her such exposure demonstrates that SNL's " political satire" is bankrupt

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:45 (nine years ago) link

i did like that martin short got a lot of airtime; how is that ever a bad thing?

I dunno. (amateurist), Monday, 16 February 2015 18:45 (nine years ago) link

Dennis Miller pulling a Nora Dunn during the Dice episode probably proves to his fans that it's the missing jigsaw piece you notice first.

pplains, Monday, 16 February 2015 19:10 (nine years ago) link

I knew VJ was there because one of the syndicated entertainment shows was interviewing her during their wrap-up after the local news (I could hear her voice blaring from the other room). Dennis Miller was obviously busy across the street jerking off Bill O'Reilly.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 February 2015 19:24 (nine years ago) link

This had a couple of laughs. I wish there had been a clip montage of musical guests, but that would have taken forever. I agree with Mark Evanier that Jim Henson should have been in the Obit section.

you make me feel like danzig (WilliamC), Monday, 16 February 2015 19:41 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I would have completely forgot about Henson in the obit section but their had a photo of Gilda with Scred!

(one of these days I will prove that I saw a circa-2001 sketch loosely about Melt-Banana, but that day is not here)

THIS HAPPENED! I SAW IT! It was the weirdest goddamn thing.

S27 E16, Cameron Diaz/Jimmy Eat World (lololol), aired 4/6/2002, band was called Crash Papayas

not at all vaguely racist

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 16 February 2015 20:07 (nine years ago) link

It'll all be fixed when SNL hires it's first Asian cast members and writers in about fifty years

rabatment of the rectangle (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 16 February 2015 20:31 (nine years ago) link

i still can't believe it happened in STUDIO 60 and it still hasn't happened on the real SNL. i mean even MadTV had Bobby Lee

Nhex, Monday, 16 February 2015 20:33 (nine years ago) link

Remember the sketch with people complaining about their iPhones being confronted by the people who made them? Yikes.
