Hunter, talk me through how you psyche/warm yourself up for leaving the house in temperatures like that, knowing that within second you'll have -10 worth of wind chill in your face and that any residual heat your body has will be sucked out of it within 200 yards?

and we're back live. its 12:30 am and im still at wokr. anyway, the answwer is:

1. I have to drop 2 kids off at daycare before i ride in, so its so fediculously hectic that i dont have time to worry about it being cold.

2. Mantra a: "this is the most fun ill have all day yeah!"

3. mantra b: "IM SUPERBAD! ive suffered waaaaay more than this before."

4. pray for string of hardcore bangers on mp3 player

5. wuss out and get on the bus or lightrail with bike. (never done this due to the cold.)

Urg no riding since chicago, now in cairo, via new york, london and berlin. My back hurts as well, (I need to stop walking round with a heavy laptop case over one shoulder). Generally bored and in a bad mood, I'd rather be cycling.

Ed, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 12:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Cycled to work yesterday after 5 days of inactivity and my lungs didn't much like it. It's going to rain solidly for the rest of the week so I'd better set the trainer up again.

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

got re-tested today by the coach--8% increase in my lactate threshold! wooot

cutty, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 23:58 (sixteen years ago) link

hella snow all over

skipped work yesterday to run errands, was going to do the same today (2 days more consistent, yo), but will probably get called out for being afraid of the weather or something, which will be irritating.

cutty, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to figure out new neighborhood and what to bike to, where is LBS, etc etc. Found the grocery store, have a vague idea of stuff, but wish it was nicer weather so it wd be comfy to just cruise around looking at streets.

nickalicious, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:09 (sixteen years ago) link

NOOOOOOOOOOO. speedy recovery.

it rained/sleeted hard on me at 1:30 am on my (abbreviated 20 min) ride home. the cold the rain the street lights- when old clientele came on, i was all, EXACTLY THIS.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

that sucks. live strong.

caek, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:36 (sixteen years ago) link

holy shit nick. i like your gusto with the trainer though. don't let clavicle bring you down like it did ddb!

today:

Gym - after a good warm up 20' on spin trainer at 90-100RPM, do this circuit of exercises 4 times, with as little time between machines as possible, so to make a good aerobic workout too:

1. Leg Press (possible a 60 degrees inclined): 22 repetitions with 90-100lbs load on machine.

2. Incline Board Sit-Ups. (body weight)- 20 repetitions.

3. Back extensions. (body weight). Perform 18 repetitions.

4. Leg extensions: 20 repetitions with light weight (try the machine, I suppose 30kg of load is ok for you on the average machine)

5. Leg Curl: 20 reps with light weight (70lbs should be ok)

6. Spinning. Pedal for 3', with a cadence of 95-100 RPM, keeping your Heart Rate around 130 beats/minute.

After the gym, if possible do 30mins on spin bike, or 1hour easy on the road.

cutty, Thursday, 6 December 2007 18:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Thats very similar to my core routine. I'd arguably bag leg extension and add lunges with 25-30 pound 'bells. 4 sets of 20 each side. if you do them right, it has the benefit of huge quad and core workout, plus good for balance/proprioception, plus huge cardiovascular (i was able to blow myself up doing a long set of these, they're brutal). theyre also safer and easier than step up squats.

high rep seated rows are also a good core routine (most people don't do these even remotely correctly tho).

Hunt3r, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:19 (sixteen years ago) link

thank you sir i will throw in some lunges too

cutty, Thursday, 6 December 2007 19:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i'll be ok, I should be healed up soon. I can't NOT ride now though, that's what THEY'D want. Also I'm finally feeling vaguely healthy for the first time in years; it wouldn't take but two weeks of buttplantery to fall all the way back - I am a champion class layabout.

I'm going to look for some 1st person video of rollercoasters or somethung for trainering.

pinning is cool. some time in the mid 90s rebecca twigg broke her collarbone 11 days before worlds. she had it plated/pinned, then won a gold medal and set WR in a her pursuit race. badass.

awesome day yesterday:

-- woke up a little hungover (a first since i've been a courier)
-- the streets were remarkably dry and ridable after getting 4 inches overnight
-- was late for work, but the dispatchers all love me now so it doesn't matter
-- CHEESEBALL, BUT: morning light on the Gehry bandshell, dusted with snow, as I'm coming down Washington Ave = v v pretty
-- ended up getting lost on some delivery up norf, ended up in the middle of a residential neighborhood with.......horses? seriously, right in the middle of the hood: huge lot with large draft horses roaming around. it was o_O and awesome and perfect.
-- the reason i got lost was because some streets in chicago have different, vanity/historical names. eg - Clark St., a major Chicago street can alternately be referred to as Sandberg Terrace for, like, a 5 block stretch. consequently, condo associations who want to have a more fashionable sounding address ("Clark" is so boring! THOUSANDS of places have addresses on Clark St!) opt for the alternate address, making my life very difficult.
-- went to the messenger bar and actually made friends, which was nice. ended up charging up to this mexican restaurant/karaoke place in my neighborhood (about 7 miles) in a fucking paceline in a headwind, slightly drunk. these guys were "taking it easy" (cat 3 CX racers) and while I didn't get broken off, I was still totally exhausted when we finally showed up. then I had two margaritas and sang Folsom Prison Blues in front of a bunch horrified Mexicans.
-- doddled home around 11.30, sat down on my couch, cracked a beer, had exactly one sip, and fell asleep sitting up and fully clothed. now i am going out to buy orange juice!

Cheeseball indeed, I am looking forward to seeing that and the bean in the snow.

Ed, Saturday, 8 December 2007 17:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I miss Chicago. Watching downhill skiing on my trainer sounded like a good idea except some poor woman half killed herself on the first run and the next half hour was a lot of concerned people with stretchers milling about.

Mark C, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:59 (sixteen years ago) link

on bike around 7-ish last night. first time on for a couple of weeks. went for an aimless trip along bike path, then took nice leafy run into the city proper on main road w/ bike lane. doubled back past melbourne uni, then back home again on side streets. took a bit over an hour, all up? not very intense, was going fairly briskly on the run into the city though. i really need a new battery for the '7-function cyclocomputer', i'm really bad at estimating distances, speed, etc.
