he or she will be famous and E! has good backup

One thing I am looking forward to is martial arts slapstick comedy scenes where someone catches a punch and then checks their email on the watch or something before counterpunching

Haha.

And the notification screen says "Look up!" in time for the hero to dodge and counter another punch.

Will my watch automatically set the time and date via the phone? Will my phone automatically set its time and date via my watch? Can I text my watch with my phone? Can I set my phone's alarm with my watch? If I take a picture of my watch with my phone, will it create a feedback loop that will fold the universe into itself?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 14:56 (nine years ago) link

The watch is going to be successful imo. First gen might be a luxury-only kind of thing, but that's no different than the iphone or ipad. Within a generation or two the supposed battery life issues will be improved and the functionality inevitably will be too, and there will be a bunch of shit that people use it for that, if you told them now, they'd say "why would I want to do that on a watch?"

Except the iPhone and iPad didn't require an iPhone.

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:00 (nine years ago) link

there's definitely something victory lap-ish about it, and if google wireless takes off i might switch to android anyway.

"steve jobs wouldn't have it let it fly, that's for sure"

marcos, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:10 (nine years ago) link

xp eh userbase for iPhone is enormous enough now, anyone interested in this brand will have an iPhone to begin with
that said I have no idea if this will take off or not. the veblen good/conspicuous consumption theory makes sense to me though

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

I was thinking that the massively overpriced options were ways for Apple to cash in on the black market markups that exist for their iPhones

, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:11 (nine years ago) link

They've gotta pay for that new HQ somehow

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:16 (nine years ago) link

There's so little excitement/chatter about this even in the techy places that I'm starting to wonder if it will be a hit or not. Even the hacker news cesspool had 1000 comments on the new MB and 74 on the watch. Apart from some shit gags, Twitter is barely talking about it either.

Some of that's probably because it was talked out after the initial announcement, but then the iPhone was launched the same way and the second announcement of that just whipped things to an even feverier pitch, iirc.

stet, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:18 (nine years ago) link

my architect friend who used to work for a structural wall fabricator was all o_O when I sent him the gap tolerances Jobs thought were acceptable between panels in their new building

it's basically the building version of their ridiculous materials/design engineering

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:18 (nine years ago) link

it's not really for "techy" people imo, those places didn't give a fuck about the iPod at first, either xp

HN reaction is weird. None of the stories are receiving up votes.

What? I know everyone talks about the infamous Slashdot post, but people forget he was eaten alive in the comments:

http://slashdot.org/story/01/10/23/1816257/apple-releases-ipod

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:21 (nine years ago) link

now that I think about it, the apple watch is really just a way for the iPhone to display data beans

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:21 (nine years ago) link

where exactly was he eaten alive in the comments?

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:24 (nine years ago) link

I think one factor that will lead to this initially being a slow-drip product -- the most recent iPhone had and is having ridiculous sales numbers, not to mention that they're selling at slightly higher price points than the old ones, so someone who just dropped $200 more than usual on a 64GB 6+ might not rush out to buy the watch right away.

But I think whether or not it's a hit boils down to whether you think wearables are going to be a failure or not. If they're going to be a success, this is the product that's going to be the leader. There's really no other contender.

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:28 (nine years ago) link

Not planning to buy one myself, tbc.

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:29 (nine years ago) link

tbh the people who shelled out the most are probably the ones who are rich enough to shell out regularly

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:30 (nine years ago) link

Also the fact that this is an as-yet frivolous product is all the more reason Apple is going to dominate -- people who bother to buy a smartwatch at all are not going to want to be seen with some bobo samsung watch

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:32 (nine years ago) link

fun fact: you could either buy one gold Apple Watch or SEVENTEEN PONIES

DJP, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:35 (nine years ago) link

Less space then the Nomad yes, but also MUCH MUCH SMALLER. You ever try putting a Nomad in your pocket and go for a walk? The Nomad is only good as a psuedo stereo component, or perhaps in your car. Not to mention the horrible battery life!

Also, how many HOURS does it take to transfer your 6.4gb MP3 collection onto your Nomad? I know my USB player takes forever to even fill up its 64mb memory. Firewire let's you do it BLAZINGLY FAST.

This is a marvel of engineering, very useful and I give apple much credit for coming out with this device. //lame my ass.

Also, did I mention automatic playlist/sing library synching with iTunes2? THIS is what portable music should be.

Lame how?

Nomad: 5x5x1.5 at 14oz
iPod: 2.4x4x.78 at 6.5oz

I'll give up a gig for size and weight

Lame?

Yeah, what about Lame? How else would you encode your mp3's?

Seriously, this device is far from lame in my eyes. 5GB is plenty of storage. I have like 20GB of mp3's anyway, not like they're really going to fit on anything out there. And uh... I never really need more that 5GB at a time, ya know.

The recharging via Firewire is cool too. The size is a plus... the Nomad is too big for me to carry around. And being able to use it as a portable harddrive is cool, too... burning CD's to ferry files back and forth is a pain. I'm gonna buy one if it works with other OS's.

What?

A few comments have already come in saying that this product isn't "innovative" enough. You can get more-or-less the same thing elsewhere.

But what does being highly innovative get Apple? Think Newton. It still runs circles around the Palm, but was a commercial failure. It was too innovative.

But, how about if you took the idea of an MP3 player, made it look nice, gave it a Firewire port for fast transfers and easy recharging, and made the whole thing sync seamlessly with iTunes.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. I imagine they'll sell quite a few. It's the right feature set at the right time.

Geoff

And, Jesus, Slashdot has become even worse to navigate.

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:37 (nine years ago) link

Anyway, my point, Apple won technologists with the iPod, iTunes, and OS X. It took a year or two before the iPod became a mainstream product.

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:40 (nine years ago) link

I guess none of those really seem like a tear-apart to me, just kind of explaining it did have pluses? It's not as if those were the only opinions, they were sprinkled among people saying it was a stupid idea.

also, I hate you for making me see if I could still sign into friggin slashdot

Hrm. I guess you’re right. It was an exaggeration. I’m just reacting to the common view that nerds universally hated the iPod.

also, I hate you for making me see if I could still sign into friggin slashdot

hahaha. I’m not sorry. :P

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:44 (nine years ago) link

I think they won the early adopters of technology who weren't that nerdy when it came to physical possessions? The iPod really only took off because people who didn't want a Nomad or whatever ungainly mp3 players were out there at the time bought it. That and people who were into the revived Apple and were interested in anything they put out.

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link

tbrr I knew people who had Creative Nomads and the like and I was still lusting over Minidisc players at the time

mh, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:45 (nine years ago) link

I want them to release an iPocketwatch that pairs with an iMonocle.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:46 (nine years ago) link

The watch isn't revolutionary like the iPod or iPhone was. Apple's spinning like it is, like having someone tap on your wrist from 100 miles away is going to change the world like carrying 1000 songs in your pocket or being able to access the internet from your phone just as you do from your computer.

And selling it like a luxury item tethered to one of their existing products proves that.

pplains, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 15:47 (nine years ago) link

Kind of forgot it wasn't compatible with Windows for the first however long. Probably sold a lot more after that.

For me, I bought an iPhone immediately after I saw the Google Maps demo. I was awestruck. And I continue to use this feature daily.

the problem with this blistering takedown is that you can't dip a Corolla in gold and get a car that is the performance equivalent of a Ferrari

A Hermes handbag costs as much as 20 Cole Haans! The $800 Air Jordans are made of the same stuff as the $80 Nike basketball shoes!

Would it be toolish to buy a $17,000 Apple watch? Of course, but the world is full of tools.

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:48 (nine years ago) link

hey off-topic but any of you have any luck selling an old iphone for a decent price? even one in somewhat poor shape? my in-laws gave us their at&t iphone 5 and we put it on craigslist but it is just sitting there as 15 new posts appear everyday selling old iphones

marcos, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 16:53 (nine years ago) link

Wait, does the watch also have a fold out lil' knife, scissors, screwdriver and saw? Because I would totally pay for that.
