Feels like the last season of The Golden Girls.

Eric H., Tuesday, 17 March 2015 17:46 (nine years ago) link

Now since you're going there -- I remember the show had been renewed through this season, but hadn't heard anything beyond that. I half wonder if this is all leading to this being...it?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link

IMO it always takes a couple of episodes to get really going and for me to get attached to the new queens. I think they put a lot of effort in making last week and this week's challenges entertaining and fun. Maybe our expectations are just really high.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 18:18 (nine years ago) link

Hahah that could be it. And they were fun!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 18:19 (nine years ago) link

I'm still adjusting to the new Untucked format though. I miss Ru's narration.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link

I kinda like the new untucked. feels less stagey, a little more natural where they just talk without ALL the edits & sipping and glancing etc

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link

also lol @ jaidynn telling pearl he's hot and that she "might need to ride your face later"

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

I kind of loved that lol. I understand that it's more real, but I think the old Untucked made me laugh more. (x-post)

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 18:51 (nine years ago) link

Some thoughts about last night's episode:

- Max was a great team leader, so happy that she won. Still top 3 for me.
- The costumes for the main challenge were beautiful. I wonder if they were provided by the production or if they were the queen's own.
- Loved Mama Ru getting all Tyra Banks on team Kennedy's boring ass.
- Trixie's bearded runway looked fucking amazing.
- The lipsynch was limp as hell. I almost thought Ru would send both home.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 17 March 2015 19:34 (nine years ago) link

yeah Kennedy can turn it the fuck out , but she was a total yawn! idk what the hell that was

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

Max's MTQ video was so terrible, it completely undercut any expectations I had from her, but she's slowly turning me around. Her looks have been gorge, but improv (re: Snatch Game) might be a test for her. (But then the THEATRE background might come in handy.)

To expand on my nu-Untucked == radical comment, I love how it's breaking the fourth-wall right now, which is something that reality tv shows are anathema to. It's not just the stagehands and PAs we see on camera -- when they talk to the eliminated queens who are out of their drag and out of their personas, and given the nature of this show, it *feels* so naked. It's a remarkable technique they've hit on, and has a rather powerful, elegiac effect, IMO. Might not be sustainable, though...

I kinda liked the lip sync! Jasmine particularly, but I'm just a sucker for good dancing.

Common Street Screwers (Leee), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 21:08 (nine years ago) link

Love Ginger's unabashed shadiness.
Kennedy loves to talk, which means more dramas, which means I love her.
Hahah loving the bifurcation of the pretteez, Fame is the good pretty, Violet is the evil pretty.
Jaidynn turning out to be a lot of fun, i.e. quotable.

Common Street Screwers (Leee), Tuesday, 17 March 2015 21:15 (nine years ago) link

Does anyone notice how Max's absurd 1930's vocal affectations seem to drift in and out like even in the same sentence? It's as if she has to remind herself "oh yeah that's how I'm talking right now, whoops"

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 March 2015 12:47 (nine years ago) link

totally! it's v strange

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 18 March 2015 14:07 (nine years ago) link

Strange as it may sound, it's an Adore Delano equivalent. "I'm fierce! Wait not really. Wait I am!"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 14:45 (nine years ago) link

I went back and rewatched Raja + Raven's Ruview from the first episode...those two are so good together, I fking love them.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 19 March 2015 01:17 (nine years ago) link

And speaking of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQMLYACVhO4

I refuse reticence on this one. Raja looks just plain hot here.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 01:03 (nine years ago) link

And we have this too

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 01:12 (nine years ago) link

can I just take a minute and say how much I love Jaidynn

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 20 March 2015 12:48 (nine years ago) link

she's growing on me

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 March 2015 14:14 (nine years ago) link

Raja and Raven look gorgeous. WTF at Raja booting Trixie and tooting Kennedy though? Those pubes!

Bland Canyon girl went crazy this week, so funny!

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 20 March 2015 14:57 (nine years ago) link

Jaidynn's a kick, more hilariously boisterous than world-wise maybe, and I'm not sure about her breakdown moment in this week's episode. But I can see her lasting for a while.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

Oh hey, we have some news!

http://www.thewrap.com/logo-tv-gives-rupauls-drag-race-early-season-8-renewal-exclusive/

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

The Season 8 premiere of “RPDR” was not only one of the reality competition’s most-watched, but it earned a nearly 20 percent increase in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. Additionally, its second episode of the season saw a double-digit increase over the debut episode.

“Over 6 million people have watched the show in some way, shape or form across all of our platforms just this season alone, the three episodes that were in,” McCarthy pointed out. “The audience continues to build and the demand for it and the content is so great, why not take advantage of all that energy right now? World of Wonder is such an amazing partner to work with and Ru that we want to get out there while it’s hot and get casting for the next season.”

Well, guess that answers that question!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

Something about that blandcanyon blog kinda bugs me :/

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 March 2015 16:37 (nine years ago) link

It's fun...but it's not perfect. There have been some moments throughout where you can sense a lot of distance not necessarily being bridged.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 16:40 (nine years ago) link

I think it's only intermittently funny, but once in a while http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s238/petstarr/Drag%20Race/Drag%20Race%207/jaidehrm.jpg

Common Street Screwers (Leee), Friday, 20 March 2015 18:39 (nine years ago) link

I'm pretty sure Jiggly Caliente was in the Broad City finale the other night; working the wig shop? anyone else clock her?

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 20 March 2015 19:39 (nine years ago) link

Confirmed

http://worldofwonder.net/jiggly-caliente-broad-city/

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 March 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link

And note this from her:

OMG…it was an amazing experience…Abbi and Ilana are HUGE fans of MAMA Ru and RuPaul’s Drag Race and they want to be in the show and says its on their bucket list!

Could be fun.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 21 March 2015 00:13 (nine years ago) link

So useful at the tail end of every winter.

Next guest judges: Lucian Piane and Jessica Alba.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 March 2015 14:32 (nine years ago) link

things I know rewatching s5

- ru's wigs are incredible
- like HOLY SHIT AMAZING
- roxxxy was a bitch on wheels but her makeup, hair + costumes were flawless every single week, I think her competitiveness overshadowed how talented she is at drag. but ughhh so cunty jesus god
- ivy winters is insanely talented. if she was competing this season she'd be almost a sure thing
- jade jolie's stupid rainbow hair dress might be one of the worst dresses ever
- i love jinx but thank god she learned how to beat her face. that contouring in the first half of the season was seriously awful. and i dont think she had a decent wig til she left the show, lol.

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 22 March 2015 02:17 (nine years ago) link

And BAM this was the episode that fully energized the season. (And holy shit on both the lip sync song choice and the final result, on top of everything else.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:03 (nine years ago) link

i thought Pearl was going to sleepwalk through that lipsync then halfway through she turned into electricity...i dunno if she has the ability to summon that all the time but if she does, whoa watch out
she was giving me a little bit of gloria swanson or something for a minute

violet's adore was pretty rad, and i dug jaidynn's crazy eye bianca

miss fame is super cunty, i'm almost down to zero feeling for that one

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:12 (nine years ago) link

Agreed with all the above. (Yeah Pearl hitting the gear shift was all 'Wait how did THAT happen.' I honestly still didn't think it would be enough, I was genuinely surprised.)

Loved the glass of water moment near the start. And the whole episode just felt like "Okay things are actually happening now, personalities bouncing off each other." (I thought the whole self-select/no minichallenge approach worked nicely too.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:20 (nine years ago) link

sidenote: i noticed April Carrion was wearing a Kandy Ho tshirt in one of the s6 eps, the Rusical ep i think?

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:23 (nine years ago) link

trixie's lipsync was great, no shade to her at all

it is a little unfair, but i think just the slight appearance of a livelier, more animated Pearl was enough for Ru to save her, given how hard she's been flatlining.

next week could be interesting

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:26 (nine years ago) link

Totally agree about the song choice for the lip-sync but they kind of killed the season for me with the bottom 2 and the result.
I'm getting tired of the show going out of their way to create drama instead of rewarding talent. As soon as Trixie said Pearl and her were good friends I knew they'd be lip-synching against each other. Kandy Ho really should have been in the bottom instead of Trixie.
And as much as I love Pearl, she was warned to wake up last week but ended in the bottom again. Yet she gets another pass and Trixie is sent home on her first misstep...

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:28 (nine years ago) link

I dunno, Trixie never totally stood out for me except in flashes. Pearl's antipersonality personality is more vivid in that regard. That said I agree Kandy dodged a bullet.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:33 (nine years ago) link

Trixie was high-safe on all episodes so far. And Pearl was mostly low. I was and still am rooting for her though, but this felt really scripted and unnecessary.

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:42 (nine years ago) link

"Ethel Merman and Paul Lynde had a love child" omg DYYYYING

I want to hang out with this person

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 23:43 (nine years ago) link

Ginger is top flight great when it comes to that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 March 2015 00:49 (nine years ago) link

so fking classic

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 25 March 2015 01:02 (nine years ago) link

And she has some amazing moments in the (v. good) Untucked this week as well. Best Untucked of the season so far too, everything really is gelling, and the new tone of Untucked really is starting to work wonders.
