Pretty sure the bus would be more awesome if some guy were crying blood instead of just eleventy old ladies with their grocery shopping being on the bus, jho.

And "more subways" will NEVER be a substitute for buses because buses use the same infrastructure as cars and the routes can be altered over time, whereas subways require huge stand-alone investment. Buses will always be decades ahead of trains in terms of reaching outskirts of any metro area; tbh the trains may never catch up at all, if the bus systems work for people over time.

i've been taking buses every saturday in 2009 pretty much, what with the constant delays & trackwork on the Q, not to mention the weekends where the L was only running between brooklyn & manhattan every fifteen minutes. I leave my house later, take the bus, and get to work earlier. B48 is my fave--in fact two or more of my recent Laurel=spottings have been while on, getting off, or waiting for the bus. Hi Laurel!

also the mta can go fuck itself and i promise this is the spring i fix my bike.

Subway and bus riders who buy unlimited-ride MetroCards before fares go up on May 31 must begin using them by June 8 to receive the full present value of the cards, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Thursday.

The cut-off date is intended in part to prevent hoarding. Given the deadline, stocking up on the cards before May 31 in the hopes of using them weeks and months later will not be a fruitful strategy.

On May 31, the price of a basic per-per-ride fare will rise to $2.50 from $2. The costs of the unlimited-ride cards, which most riders use, will also increase: to $9.50 from $7.50 for the one-day fun pass, to $31 from $25 for the seven-day card, to $59 from $47 for the 14-day and to $103 from $81 for the 30-day card.

Unlimited-ride cards bought at current prices will only be valid until the following dates: June 8 for the one-day fun pass, June 14 for the seven-day card, June 21 for the 14-day card and July 7 for the 30-day card.

Congratulations! Last night, your phone calls, letters and emails were heard and acted upon by our elected officials in Albany. Because of you, millions of straphangers can breath a sigh of relief knowing their bus, train or commuter line will still be there on June 1st.

While not perfect, the new legislation halves the fare and toll increases, derails the service cuts and provides enough revenue for two years of capital repairs and rebuilding. Rest assured we will continue to fight for safe, decent and affordable transit, but today we can all celebrate a big victory for our 9 million neighbors.

What does the bill include?

A single-ride MetroCard will be $2.25, not $2.50;

The pay-per-ride discount will be 20% when you buy $7.50 or more;

A 30-day MetroCard will be $89, not $103;

Fare increases on LIRR and MetroNorth will be about 10% as opposed to the 25%-70% hikes in the MTA "Doomsday" budget;
The Doomsday service cuts will not happen, maintaining current levels of service; and
two years worth of capital funding will ensure the MTA has the basic resources needed to continue to rebuild the system.

This morning a really big, very tall kid right in front of me entered the double doors of the 5 train and stopped there, with me and a lot of other people stuck behind him. He stood there despite the fact that I bumped right into him and no one could get by, up until he saw a seat he could get to. Then he decided he didn't want to lean against the doors anymore, so he moved in and took the seat.
