Hey can I ask you guys a question? One of my oldest friends is having her first baby! :D Despite being in the other side of 35 nearly none of my friends have kids so I don't have a lot of experience with this. I want to send her a present for the shower. I already got an adorable outfit but I want to send something else too. I figure that she'll get mostly stuff for the baby but she lives in AZ and it's going to be 100 degress by the time she's in her last month. Would it be really weird if I sent a gift certificate for pre-natal massage or some sort of mama pampering thing? Do you think she'd rather just want baby stuff?
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 17:55 (nine years ago) link
Oh! She's having a girl I also got her this alphabet book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0872866831/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0872866831&linkCode=as2&tag=openculture-20&linkId=CBY52NKUMALWLTHS also totally bought one for myself because HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 17:57 (nine years ago) link
I think a prenatal massage gift certificate would be great if you know she would like that. If you're not sure, Target or Amazon gift cards are always going to work.
― from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 18:03 (nine years ago) link
Or you could get her a Sophie.
I'm not a parent but I bet she would be very, very happy to get something that lets her know you're thinking of her as her and not just as New Mom. I've bought things like that for pregnant friends. Or after the birth, nice bath stuff for the baby and even nicer bath stuff NOT for the baby but for the parent(s).
― ljubljana, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 18:04 (nine years ago) link
Depending on what their needs are, I don't think a mama-pampering thing is inappropriate - it's sort of a cruel truism that once the baby comes nobody gives a shit about the mother anymore. That being said, baby accoutrements can get quite expensive and if there's a registry or they've specifically asked for certain things then I would say respect their priorities.

Throw back Wednesday picture of Ivy and her Soph:

^^^^ Yeah! That was my thought process! I do think she'd like the massage and I know her sister who lives out there so I could even ask her for a recommendation for a spa. I like Sophie and I LOVE Ivy :D.
Thanks for the tips, guys. ― Οὖτις - I emailed her earlier about a registry but her sister didn't mention on on the shower invite so I'm guessing there isn't one.

I think she was about seven months in that picture and it's blowing my mind a little because she still makes that same exact face, with the wistful knowing smile.

It's a good face. Her arms though :D!
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 18:21 (nine years ago) link
I think Carl's OTM.
Opinions may vary, but I know sunny's thinking when given a certificate for a massage was, "oh right, I've got plenty of time to do things like that now. I'll just pencil in a time for after my acceptance speech in Oslo."

I have purchased two (2) Sophies for two (2) babies who I love very much. Have p much decided to buy Sophie for all babies I meet from now on.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link
You should do that for all ppl you meet too. Sophie's for everyone!
― Jeff, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 22:29 (nine years ago) link
I would happily accept a Sophie! She looks great to chew on.
I was babysitting a little guy (8 mos) a week ago who has some separation anxiety nowadays, after a long and painful while trying to console him I cheated and showed him the Wraith pinned to the mist video by of Montreal. Relaxed the hell out of him!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 22:36 (nine years ago) link
Yeah I don't get the Sophie thing that much, my parents came to visit a month ago and were like WTF WHY DON'T YOU HAVE A SOPHIE and went out and bought one the next day. It's okay I guess? We leave it in the car seat for travel chewing.
― joygoat, Thursday, 23 April 2015 00:06 (nine years ago) link
I just don't know much about babies and found it funny that it was popping up on every registry I looked up. So now I buy it when I see it requested!
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 23 April 2015 00:12 (nine years ago) link
Sophie is *so* easy for a young baby to hold by her lovely long legs. Yes, we have one too...
― Madchen, Thursday, 23 April 2015 03:16 (nine years ago) link
yeah it's the ease of holding and the multiple points that you can grab and/or chew, makes it easy for them
― sleeve, Thursday, 23 April 2015 04:06 (nine years ago) link
Our daughter isn't so bothered by her sophie teething toy, but we have a Peekaboo Sophie pop up book, with sophie and al her dudes hiding behind panels, and she LOVES that, starts giggling the minute she sees it.

i love how serious your sons are about playing, DJP
― horseshoe, Thursday, 23 April 2015 12:30 (nine years ago) link
the best is when the joy bursts through the concentration and they are both like "OH HELL YES IT'S A GIFT TO BE ALIVE ON THIS WRETCHED EARTH BECAUSE I BANGED SOME MOTHERFUCKING BLOCKS TOGETHER NOW WATCH ME CLAP MOTHERFUCKER *giggle*"
also I had never heard of a Sophie until the mentions in this thread
― DJP, Thursday, 23 April 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link
I don't know if it's teething or we're doing something wrong but I was getting way more regular, predictable sleep with a 3 month old than with a 5 month old. We had a glorious couple of weeks where he'd go to bed at 7, get up for a bottle and change at 11, then again at 3, and wake up for good at 8am.
Now he goes to sleep between 6:30 and 8:30, wakes up fussing an hour later, gets rocked back to sleep, wakes up again 90 minutes later, eats, falls back asleep, then basically seems to wake up every 30 to 60 minutes for some bullshit reason or another through the rest of the night. I feel like I'm going to die.

But when I see the kid in the morning I feel like Homer Simpson with the giant sandwich that kept making him sick - how can I stay mad at you?http://i.imgur.com/qmmlzM9.jpg

― Madchen, Thursday, 23 April 2015 21:19 (nine years ago) link
Sorry about that.
― Madchen, Thursday, 23 April 2015 21:20 (nine years ago) link
I've heard that but with the teething mixed in and eating solid foods now it all seems so random and unpredictable. I guess I should get used to that.
Also so tired right now that I didn't realize I'd put this in the photo thread, not the parenting thread so apologies for that.

Cecil can't quite crawl yet, but trying results in slowly moving backwards which leads to discovering him randomly stuck under furniture throughout the day.

That happened the other day with our baby and the recliner.

Isolde is crawling now, for a while she couldn't figure out what to do with her left leg, so she was dragging it behind her like a wounded soldier
