actually maybe i dont. one of my favorite things about taking all these tracks and calling them 'balearic' is that it provides a framework for people to be "ok" with listening to collins and chris rea and whoever else. any complaining about it just becomes "oh they only listen to it IRONICALLY while i listen to phil collins AUTHENTICALLY" which is just a non-starter

still i get annoyed with the idea that any of these guys are ONLY enjoyable or worthwhile in a balearic context

i think i just hate the really common tendency of music writers to act like we're all coming from the same direction/on the same page about what music is considered 'good,' as if its not even remotely possible that one of their readers could have purchased and enjoyed phil collins on their own

universalizing their own perspectives, and writers do this CONSTANTLY in all kinds of publications ... the Chicago Reader does this all the time and its really obnoxious

as i see it, one of the best things music writing can do is help show people how to get maximal enjoyment out of a piece of music.

totally agree that discussing (or even simply playing) something in a balearic context can do this... a phil collins song may or may not work for a contemporary 20-something avid music listener on an emotional level (i'm not sure it was ever supposed to!), but on a balearic level (which i don't think is ironic, exactly, just different) it can make total sense.

seems more like "ok, i am putting myself in this perspective" and enjoying the overall sonics instead of the lyrics or whatever "rockist" type stuff an actual collins record buyer might've focused on forever ago

ok, sure. but i think it's fair to say that different people can listen to phil collins for different things, and that context is important. when i heard him on soft rock radio as a kid it was NOT next to "love on a real train."

yeah marc we agree i think--this is one of those useful things abt the idea of "genre" is that it allows u to contextualize stuff so as to get a better appreciation (or whatever) of it... the problem is when its framed as "phil collins always sucks, except in this context" instead of "phil collins is transformed placed in this context" or whatever

Yeah I agree with the general thrust of the last few comments. The interesting thing about "balearic" as an organising principle is how it forces you to see connections between things that you would have put in different categories previously - like, the Ronny & Renzo mix feels very consistent despite cutting across house, disco, "experimental" electronic music, soft pop-rock. This was also the idea behind my thread about tracks that you'd like to see edited by Todd Terje or whatever: "Balearic" encourages me to see the potential for something to be transformed into "dance music" as much as the realistic likelihood of it being considered as such.

But yeah, "Balearic helps us to like Phil Collins" is just boring, the most pointless and crude version of the above dynamic imaginable.

"wot shall i file this BALEARIC BEATS under?" so young joe public, y.t.s., go-getter at yo-price megastore hits his first problem in pigeon-holeing the black vinyl. now seeing that the only "MATEY" joe's "EVER GOT RIGHT ON" is the rubbery balloon type his guv'nor sells, i think we should explain this happy, happy, groove a little more.

now while it's true that the balearic beat was born in IBIZAN clubs, such as AMNESIA and PASHA, it's breeding took place in a small, sweaty, strobby, smokey south london club called ..... THE SHOOM. the hardcore original shoomers, along with another london club THE FUTURE, had discovered the JOY'S of balearic beats, during several previous "summers of love" (sic), and had brought the music and the attitude back to london with them. the kinectic style of dancing now associated with balearics ugly brother, ACID HOUSE, is pure ibizan in origin. The loudest screams at SPECTRUM are always reserved for NITZER EBB and the RESIDENTS while hearing ENZO AVITABILE booming through the smoke at JOY is an ecstatic experience one step away, (some say forward) from sex.

THE FINI TRIBE and MANDY SMITH have become anthems all over clubland, whilst my personal faves are the fast euro-rhythms of CODE 61 and the post-punk thrashing of THE WOODENTOPS. every track of this album will fill floors and put smiles on faces, Throughout the balearic underground. look, i wonder if poor joe's getting the gist of all this, for joe and the yet uninitiated, balearic is the following and much, much more.....

.....loads of hugs and kisses ... smiley t-shirts and happy faces.... feeling saucey instead of sauced......eating fruits on the dance floor....bashed up converse trainers.....lovely girls with blinding accents.....ice pops.....hedionism....sparklers at the future....indian belly dancers at the shoom....almost everyone finally realising that "only love can conquer hate"....watching the sun set at the café del mar....watching the sun rise on primrose hill....the karma collective....poncho's pony tails and body paint....dj alfredo....new friendships....loads more hugs and kisses....just let this piece of warm anglo-ibizan club culture rush over you, enjoy it mateys!!!

I want to talk about Aeroplane again. Has anyone else ever in the history of anything ever come up with grooves as all-encompassing and epochal sounding as those on "Aeroplane", "Love Love Love (Aeroplane Remix)" and "Whispers"? I think not. The widescreen sparkliness reminds me somewhat of DJ T's "Freemind", but he only managed this once, not three times. Their dj mixes on the 24 hours blog are fabulous too.

yeah the love love love rmx has been on nonstop repeat in my house for a month now--the original and the LSB soundsystem remixes are great too!

"aeroplane" is a really appropriate name for these guys

i like the das pop remix too ... although i find their stuff somewhat samey feeling. is it really such a feat to achieve the same thing 3 times or does that make them a one trick pony? i don't know how 'balearic' i think they are either. more like pretty straight forward 'nu disco' pop jams (which isn't the worst thing)

but it's the best trick ever!

listened to all the new Aeroplane stuff today at a record store (Pacific Air, Love Love Love rmx, the Kathy Diamond 12", maybe even one other one ... they've got a lot out now) but none of it hit me in the same way as that first 12". didn't end up buying any of em.

Etherea is where I went today, they have tons of this stuff. Kims carries some of it but their dance section can be kinda disorganized I think.

on the other hand it seems like Etherea has higher prices, a lot of their import 12"s are $12.98-$13.98 ugghh. which contributed to my only buying one of em (the Simone Fedi on Eskimo).

The Kathy Diamond is killer. That, "Aeroplane" and the remix of "Love, Love, Love" are best I think.

there's also a Love Love Love - Soft Rocks Remix with Kathy Diamond that was pretty cool. the other side was a Still Going rmx that I wasn't that into

of course this is all first impressions just playchecking records real fast, I'm sure I might go back and change my mind on some of this stuff later
