Jesus, dude.

Out of curiosity and a desire not to die or see anyone die, how DO you signal a driver to stop short??

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 5 May 2015 02:48 (eight years ago) link

everybody up and down the platform waves their hands frantically; the conductor is in the front car so as long as he/she is paying any kind of attention, they can stop as soon as they see everyone going nuts. apparently one of the best things you can do if someone falls on the track is have people on the end of the platform where the train is coming in signalling and waving as far from the person who fell in as it gets.
I kinda always thought if you fell in it would be no big deal but yeah, you really kinda do need a hand to get out... and if, like this lady, you get knocked the fuck out (which isn't very hard to do, it's like a eight foot drop) there's really no way to do anything to protect yourself.

clarification -- the driver is in the front car and they are controlling the speed of the train. the conductor is in the middle car and their job is to operate the doors.

(on the path, which is shorter, the conductor and driver are both upfront. but its still the driver who will be in the cab, looking out into the track, and see people signaling.)

well god bless that guy

two weeks pass...

after the first twenty minutes of my F train ride was a crying baby and then twenty minutes of loud chatting teenagers in the seat next to me, i guess i just couldn't handle the sonic pusharound anymore because i just got into a yelling match with a crew of guys who came onto the train and gave the "It's SHOWTIME" and i jumped out of my seat and said "NO SHOWTIME! NO SHOWTIME! NO SHOWTIME PLEASE!"
teenage kids are predictable: first they wanted to know if i was a cop, then they started cursing at me, then they started threatening me, then they started phone taping me and trying to goad me into either making physical contact or saying something sufficiently offensive. eventually i found myself in the unenviable position of no longer having a seat (this went on for like five stops) and being told to go to another car which got my own dander up to the point where i'm puffing up and acting the fool. eventually an older woman jumped into the fracas and told everyone to chill the fuck out. several more flare ups and a lot of bullshit later and one of the kids following me out of the train to maddog me going up the stairs, i'm back at home trying to write a letter to the Rock Steady Crew about their upcoming anniversary show.
i dunno man. i'm on the goddamn selection committee for the MTA's performance wing! i shouldn't be so touchy about this shit! the city fucks with you sometimes.

i yelled at showtimers recently too after THEY ASKED ME TO MOVE MY STANDING POSITION, but i've never believed in even mild forms of hostage-taking

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 June 2015 03:33 (eight years ago) link

i am gonna go on record as being anti-showtime: it's uncomfortable to have people blaring loud (and generally poor) instrumental beats while people violently fling themselves right in front of you in a captive space and 90% of these kids are not particularly good.
You wanna do it in the station or on the street, no problem but forcing any performance in front of me is exhausting enough; moving your body in such a way that I can't get up from my seat while you're in the middle of your performance is extremely offensive.

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 11 June 2015 03:34 (eight years ago) link

yeah, showtime is overall a huge DUD. i kind of count on my subway time being productive time with my reading. or at least being able to just zone out and think about whatever. please don't kick me in the face.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 11 June 2015 03:55 (eight years ago) link

i fucking hate fight or flight situations. I let my temper get the better of me, throw myself into a potentially dangerous situation and then have no idea how to extricate myself. Fuck if i was gonna walk away from that but what the hell did i have to gain by escalating an argument with three increasingly angry, hostile teenagers? It really ruined my girlfriend's night and clearly made everyone on the train even more uptight than if I had just bit my tongue. clearly, i need to burn off more bad dude energy jogging or lifting or something.

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 11 June 2015 04:08 (eight years ago) link

ehhhh i hear all that, and would totally be raking myself over the coals the same way but i dunno. basically the hostile teenagers are in some sense daring somebody to do that at some point, otherwise society in general would be ceding the definition of a public space's appropriate and safe use to a small cohort of roaming dancers whose line is in shaking people down for money. not trying to say you're the hero of society. but just that if it's any comfort, they did "start" this by stepping onto the car and beginning a disruptive and irritating performance. but yes, confrontation is exhausting, stressful, and maybe does not "help" anybody.

my Manhattan-bound F platform is closed "til fall" for renovation (so, December 18?). Extra good for an extra 10 sweaty minutes of walking before chemotherapy. SHOULDA MOVED, FUCK ME.

The only reason I didn't bike today is I thought it was going to thunderstorm all morning and now it turns out I would have saved myself 2 hours of drinking time. Fuck me.

It is surprising that the subway announcement guy is a Brit. He never sounded like a bonafide New Yorker to me, but I assumed he was from the Midwest or Kansas perhaps

chinavision!, Friday, 14 August 2015 17:28 (eight years ago) link

there are too many generic outer borough stations, like I can't remember which far out brooklyn/bronx stops I've gotten on and which I haven't. the only queens ones I'm missing are gonna be random rockaways stops, the only manhattan ones would be one or two random harlem stops maybe. I actually made it a point to visit every paris metro stop when I lived there, but outer borough ny stations are generic enough that it's not worth the trouble.

iatee, Friday, 14 August 2015 17:38 (eight years ago) link

I don't think I've done a number of Manhattan stops north of 96th if I'm remembering correctly. Also hardly anything in the Bronx really.

chinavision!, Friday, 14 August 2015 17:54 (eight years ago) link

123 but yeah i'm sure i'm missing at least a handful. too much head-scratching of "now where would i have gotten off that one time..." etc. cute though!
