Is it possible he actually did some acting in 2013?

Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Monday, 24 August 2015 09:27 (eight years ago) link

can't believe that Halifax replaced Howard with this garbage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3veZJjvhzM

I seem to remember it being revealed that these ppl were in fact actors, not real Halfix employees plucked from obscurity like Howard?

authentic plastic rat (soref), Monday, 24 August 2015 09:38 (eight years ago) link

though apparently Howard was not very popular north of the border, don't know if you can confirm this, Tom

that Air N'nB ad missed a trick by omitting a Don't Look Now reveal at the end, with the baby in Juggalo make-up or similar

13 Howard Brown You're The The First The Last My Everything Mar 2005

From April 2008, Brown no longer starred in the Halifax adverts, instead taking a role in its public relations department.[5][6] In 2011, he left the company.[7]

halifax made a big deal out of auditioning internally - YOU COULD BE THE NEW HOWARD - but iirc you didn't get much ££

"Be my hope beating in my chest
you're the only thing I need to make make me the best, singing .. WO WO OH OH.."

Asda ad. Presumably this fakey Coldplay type song was a real song once, but he sounds too puffed up w/ his own importance to need a g/f/ or anything out of Asda anyway.

I genuinely feel angry every time I see one of these ads, according to the article below they are going to using these characters in their ads for the foreseeable future

The spot will show the family in a supermarket with Ben Miller's character Roger playing an 'embarrassing dad' figure, quizzing the checkout colleague on the mechanics of the Brand Guarantee.

It will be followed by a spot showing Ruth Jones' character Jo, who "gets on her high horse about certain things", tutting the word "typical" when she sees a queue at the till before being pleasantly surprised when a Tesco colleague opens a check out to serve her... The characters in the campaign represent a modern family, with "sexual chemistry" between the parents and banter between the father and son, Freddie, who represents a 'boomerang' child back living with parents in his 20s.

has there ever been an ad campaign of this type, centered on a fictional family, where the family have not been completely hateful and enraging?

soref, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link

Christ that's terrible. 'Make the average customer out to be a completely embarrassing moron' is never a good strategy. I quite like Armstrong and Miller as a comedy duo, so it's extra annoying

I never liked those Paul Whitehouse insurance (is it insurance I don't even know?) ads where he plays different people in each one, but doesn't say or do anything remotely funny in any of them, just talks about insurance (or whatever it is he's selling).

Based on many commercials that I see these days, I'm led to believe that ad execs find most people stupid and loathesome and also believe that most people find one another (and, presumably, themselves) stupid and loathesome.

OXO family? Or maybe I'm being a) nostalgic, b) comparing them favourably to my own deeply flawed relatives.

Does anyone know the Klingon for T'ai Chi? (snoball), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 20:11 (eight years ago) link

OXO family beats the new Tesco ads in the 'with "sexual chemistry" between the parents' stakes, at the very least

soref, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 20:18 (eight years ago) link

I find no sales technique quite as persuasive as the suggestion that the fictional characters making a pitch are engaged in a whole lot of offscreen fucking.

the sexual chemistry between Nicholas Lyndhurst and Nicholas-Lyndhurst-in-a-wig is the gold standard here imo

I used to work with someone whose wife looked like him in a wig. It was rather disconcerting.

Saw two new Tesco ones yesterday - in the first the son tries to pick up a woman closer to his mother's age than his, and the second is about 'gluten free' and how stupid the son is.

suffeeciant attreebution (aldo), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 09:52 (eight years ago) link

That "pick-up" one is the most cringe-inducing and yukky ad ever.

ad execs playing off superiority complex of most people thinking most other people are stupid and loathesome. also likely playing off our superiority towards the ads themselves. not only are we smarter than the idiots portrayed in these ads, we are smarter than the people making the ads. of course we still feel a tiny bit of gratitude for the ads for indulging our sad egos.

there's an ad for a new phone app for your refrigerator that shows you what is inside. there are a few commercials for it but one involved an insufferable couple; he is at a grocery store, she is literally standing in front of the refrigerator, and he asks her if they are out of eggs. she can't turn around because she is scooping out a watermelon (to which he says "I know, you're an artist!"). both these people would lose their heads if they weren't attached at the neck.
