gave up counting the number of times the word 'i' was used in that post once i got past 60. easier to count the word 'son', though: twice. good going, dad, way to connect to the son you say feels nothing for you.

it's relaxing but pretty isolating, if a lot of your friends have integrated it into their lives; they'll just keep on posting shit about their incidentals and forget that you ever existed

some of them will suspect that you just unfriended them

I'd really like to take the plunge. I use Messenger a lot for IMing though. Haven't looked into whether that would be affected. I've mostly stopped posting and try to stay logged out as much as I can.

I deleted mine a few years ago and have not once regretted it or even been tempted to open another account under a fake name.

I was preparing to speak at an I Can Do It conference and I decided to bring an orange on stage with me as a prop for my lecture. I opened a conversation with a bright young fellow of about twelve who was sitting in the front row.

“If I were to squeeze this orange as hard as I could, what would come out?” I asked him.

He looked at me like I was a little crazy and said, “Juice, of course.”

“Do you think apple juice could come out of it?”

“No!” he laughed.

“What about grapefruit juice?”

“No!”

“What would come out of it?”

“Orange juice, of course.”

“Why? Why when you squeeze an orange does orange juice come out?”

He may have been getting a little exasperated with me at this point.

“Well, it’s an orange and that’s what’s inside.”

I nodded. “Let’s assume that this orange isn’t an orange, but it’s you. And someone squeezes you, puts pressure on you, says something you don’t like, offends you. And out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, fear. Why? The answer, as our young friend has told us, is because that’s what’s inside.”

It’s one of the great lessons of life. What comes out when life squeezes you? When someone hurts or offends you? If anger, pain and fear come out of you, it’s because that’s what’s inside. It doesn’t matter who does the squeezing—your mother, your brother, your children, your boss, the government. If someone says something about you that you don’t like, what comes out of you is what’s inside. And what’s inside is up to you, it’s your choice.

When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes anything other than love, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed to be inside. Once you take away all those negative things you don’t want in your life and replace them with love, you’ll find yourself living a highly functioning life.

Thanks, my young friend, and here’s an orange for you!

“If you were to squeeze this lemon as hard as you could, what would run down my leg?” I asked him.

polyphonic, Monday, 31 August 2015 19:40 (eight years ago) link

It's a really bad metaphor too. An orange is immutably an orange on the inside, a fact that you can easily discern from the outside.

I don't use Facebook at all these days. It was basically to keep in touch with a few good friends while I was away, but seeing them for the first time in 4 years recently, they've assured me Facebook or no Facebook, when I'll return in a year, it'll be just like I never left. Plus, one of our other good friends was never on there and he even flew in from another city to celebrate our birthdays, which was pretty rad.

Anyway, this is after hardly even communicating with them, much less through Facebook. So, that's comforting.

I'm getting ready to pull the plug. I'm just creating an email address book and making sure everyone knows my email. A few of us in the same circle of friends enjoyed corresponding via that medium anyway.

When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes anything other than love, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed to be inside.

This is craziness. As if we all started in some place where all there is inside us is love and somehow we "allow" anger to get in where it doesn't belong. Babies can get angry as hell. Did they "allow" that in?

Aimless, Monday, 31 August 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link

When someone punches you in the face, it's what was already inside that comes out, just like with a tomato.

I dunno if I'd know who he was if I hadn't worked in a bookstore, but I think he was at least 1/7th of the self-help section. Sez Wiki: "His first book Your Erroneous Zones (1976) is one of the best-selling books of all time, with an estimated 35 million copies sold." So I'd believe that the kind of person who posts a lot of anguished status updates of people they've never heard of could have in fact heard of this guy.

Okay fuck it here's his bibliography, though be warned it looks a lot like a Clickhole version of his bibliography would:

if the three movies that made you cry are green mile, t2 and forrest gump, the only logic conclusion is that you have only seen 3 movies and you cry at literally any stimulus
