just a bit about the politics. Some people say it's nazi stuff, some say it's complex, some say it's too incoherent to have a real viewpoint.

i lean toward the latter with a dose of both first and second in the mix

I’m not reading a Vice hot take about other people’s Nazi tendencies

Kazuma Hashimoto (who wrote that first Polygon article) is a good follow on twitter if you're interested in politics and LGBTQ issues in Japan.

I started watching this again after the four year or whatever it was gap between seasons. Am simultaneously reading it as well. Can only agree with this, s3 is really great and it’s so different from s1 which I thought was incredible already.

I’m not fully read on the politics of the situation so caveats but I basically agree that it’s muddled and complex at once and there are certainly some dodgy implications to some of the imagery.

Dot Pixis being based on this guy is well known. The main twist of the series - what’s in the basement, Eldia and Marley and all that, is rather murkier. Eldians are clearly meant to Jewish analogues at least part of the time - they are forced into ghettoes by the Marleyans and forced to wear armbands with yellow stars. It’s about as subtle as a thunder spear to the head.

However the story itself first alludes to the Eldians potentially having oppressed other countries (massive red flag) except then that it turns out that this itself was propaganda for the justification for their oppression. It reminded me somewhat of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion being used as rationalisation to oppress Jewish people. If there is no ‘reason’, one will be invented.

The other thing, about Eldians being able to shift into Titans (which eat people) is obviously massively dodgy and people are right to flag that up as such! The thing that I think about this is how the Marleyans forcibly do it to their own population of Eldians to set them loose on the Eldians on Paradis - this reminded me of Nazi experimentation. I seriously doubt the author meant for the Eldians abandoned by their leader to remind me quite so much of Northern Ireland, but it did. I have read other people saying that the dynamics reminded them of Rwanda and that Paradis is based on Madagascar reminded them of the Madagascar plan, but I am not even close to being well informed enough to comment on either of those.

The series thinks a lot about violence: its pointlessness, how sacrifice is so rarely rewarded and yet upheld as the most glorious of virtues, the cycle of violence. An interesting thing about the anime is that it maps the progression of this theme with its own framing - the first part of series 1 has the super-militaristic opening and absolute banger of a theme tune, but by the time you’re on s3 the opening is past and present, past and present, how history shapes the present and it’s a very different story.

Anyway I will update this at some point when I finish reading the thing as it’s not by any means a complete picture, but a lot of the critique I’ve read out there and upthread seems to focus on plot points that I’ve already passed.

Last episodes coming really soon, I never did go back and finish reading the manga (I’m still reading it but it’s long and your man’s art is slow to improve).
