Actually disappointed not to see a new regular iPad in there. First time they won't get a yearly update

they might do a quiet refresh?

the separate environment tvOS is really counterintuitive to me, can anyone suggest why they're doing that

what do you mean? It's a different kind of interaction so they need a different UX. It's all just forks of OS X under the hood.

The diff "OSes" mostly refer to the different GUIs and availability of special APIs on each. Most of the programming interfaces are shared, it's just a different project target. I'd imagine most games wouldn't take a whole lot of changes outside of controls.

but i don't WANT to be under the hood

new ipad mini seems like... maybe i finally take the plunge?

where the sterls have no name (s.clover), Thursday, 10 September 2015 01:37 (eight years ago) link

then why do you care they're different? xp

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 02:45 (eight years ago) link

Just imagine they are all the same, but there are a handful of components, which we'll call: A B C D E F
Watch OS uses AB and F
iOS uses ABCD, although D only works on iPads (something like multitasking view)
tvOS uses ABDE

So if I'm a developer and I have a library for other developers, it might apply to everything like AB does
If I want to extend an application I wrote, I can use common code for some bits, write a different GUI, and it now works on both iOS and tvOS
Otherwise you end up with stopgaps like the pixel doubling mode that lets you view phone apps on an iPad -- it works because the iPad has the right capabilities for the most part, but it's clunky.

Apple TV already has a stopgap mode, which is the AirPlay mirroring -- you just use it as a display for another iOS device. So basically multiple OSes make it so things work correctly, reduce errors and support needs, and gives you proper testing channels and verification -- they can run automated tools on app store submissions to make sure the API calls are the right ones

Android apps, mostly on rooted devices (which you could probably do on Apple devices, too) can run on other platforms they weren't meant for but it's hacky and a nightmare for developers getting crash logs from random shit they never wanted to support in the first place. I can understand someone wanting to, for example, play a game on Fire TV that is meant for an Android phone but encouraging the path of just shoving the same executable on every device is actually a lot more work than making a native version

too long, do not read unless you are a developer, really

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 02:58 (eight years ago) link

short version: when you design an OS for all devices, whether it's touchscreen tablets or desktops, you get Windows 8

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 03:02 (eight years ago) link

mh, i was riffing on

It's all just forks of OS X under the hood.

but thanks for the full breakdown that's a lot clearer

if i buy a CDMA iphone outright at the same time as signing up for the new month-to-month simple verizon plans, i know that means i can put a european SIM in it when travelling, but can i also put an, e.g. at&t or t-mobile SIM in it in the US. or is it somehow locked inside the US?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 10 September 2015 11:10 (eight years ago) link

i think you can - hard to say without seeing the tech specs tho?

, Thursday, 10 September 2015 12:05 (eight years ago) link

my verizon 5 is somehow locked inside the us, can't even roam properly with a european sim when back in the usa. maybe they fixed that in later phones?

ty for humoring my lack of reading comprehension

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 13:49 (eight years ago) link

caek, when I got an iPhone 6 last year it was via my friend with a Verizon plan. at that point, Verizon had stopped locking their phones completely. I think that's still the case. as far as it being a CDMA phone, it was no prob because there are no "CDMA" phones anymore -- they just support the most common bands for the region you're in but I've used both Cricket and Rogers sims in there with no issue.

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 13:50 (eight years ago) link

Euler, you should be able to request an unlock from Verizon, I think, since you've had the phone long enough

How portable is the Mac Mini, and how possible is it to use it in some situations in lieu of a laptop, assuming you have a portable display? I mean obviously you can't like use it on your lap on a bus, but would it be realistic to carry it around with a portable monitor and set it up in a café where it can be plugged in?

Why would you want to do that

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Thursday, 10 September 2015 14:17 (eight years ago) link

I think there is a device you are looking for, called a laptop

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link

It seemed like maybe you'd get better specs for the money than with a MacBook, but yeah that looks fucking ridiculous, the mini is bigger than I thought.

mh, in north america there are two models of every iphone, one is GSM-only and one is GSM and CDMA. afaict you can only get the CDMA by choosing verizon or sprint as yr provider when you buy from apple, or by buying from verizon or sprint. i want the CDMA+GSM one "in case", but i will probably end up on t-mobile or an MVNO or whatever. i asked on metafilter too and consensus seems to be nothing to worry about. thx all.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 10 September 2015 15:05 (eight years ago) link

oh, they did some weird shit where the same model number has a CDMA variation, how nice (what a clusterfuck)

so this is the "support matrix": http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/
but this is the actual list of model numbers: http://leimobile.com/iphone-6-model-numbers/

for ref I have a MG602LL/A and I use it with the aforementioned carriers. should also work on verizon, but whatever.

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 15:35 (eight years ago) link

and it works fine on GSM despite being a "CDMA/LTE" model

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 15:36 (eight years ago) link

btw it's probably stupid new version confirmation bias, but iOS 9 does seem speedier on an iPhone 6

probably hitting that 'Metal'

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 10 September 2015 15:47 (eight years ago) link

will the next version be iOS X??

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 10 September 2015 15:49 (eight years ago) link

I really do kind of feel like Apple is overloading us with new shit compared to the Steve Jobs era, like people are still trying to digest the watch, which is an entire new product category, and now at the same time as the latest phone there's also a new category of iPad and some sort of pencil thingy on top of all the other updated products and a supposedly very different Apple TV, and it does feel a little fatiguing.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2015 19:03 (eight years ago) link

wasn't it just a few months ago that people were like "what have you done for us lately, apple??"

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link

how long out are we from the MB12" being viable? played w/one today for the first time and it is gorgeous

hot doug stamper (||||||||), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link

not this guy, but I don't have that Apple everything kind of money, and I have a limited tolerance for gadgets so maybe I'm just not the target market. I was pretty psyched about the iphone 6, and I still like mine a lot, but I'm still using a 4-year-old $400 Dell laptop and I don't have any other apple products. My wife does actually have an ipad mini but I never touch it -- after playing with it a good amount I just don't have any situations where I would use it over either my phone or laptop.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link

But still, from an outsider's perspective, I really liked the clean, minimal product line that Apple used to offer.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:33 (eight years ago) link

they still basically just have a pro + consumer model of each thing, apart from the ipad line, the overlapping distinctions of which are become, how you say, nutso in the butso

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:41 (eight years ago) link

They have three different lines of desktops -- imac, mac mini, mac pro, and that's not counting the separate imac vs retina display imacs as delineated on the website. They also have three different lines of laptop -- MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro, and the "Air" designation has become confusing given that the regular macbooks are actually lighter.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:47 (eight years ago) link

ha i forgot about the regular old macbooks

i guess you're right

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:49 (eight years ago) link

I actually had no idea that MacBook Air was the cheaper model until I just looked on the website -- I thought MacBook was sort of the "student" model, but that does not seem to be the case. I guess Airs are for casual users, Pros are for Pros, and MacBooks are for...?

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 September 2015 20:51 (eight years ago) link

macbooks are their labs model

The keyboard on the newMacBook is basically unuseable.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Friday, 11 September 2015 22:07 (eight years ago) link

the new Macbook is amazing, I'm three weeks into a work trip with it as my only machine right now and it's doing absolutely fine. Also being able to charge off USB turns out to be pretty great for traveling - just one adapter for everything.

keyboard is different, but I can type on it as comfortably and as quickly as on any other mac keyboard.

the font is weird..!!! it's freaking me out!! is it the same font that youtube just changed to? i dunno.. i'll forget anything even changed in a couple of weeks but right now i feel like i have to get used to my phone all over again

calstars, Saturday, 19 September 2015 00:42 (eight years ago) link

Thinking of replacing my 2012 Air with one of the newer models from the refurb shop, but I notice they've got a really wide range of options, from more powerful machines with more features that are almost as old to less powerful (I guess) models from as recently as 2015. I'm not sure what distinctions I should be looking for, since most will be better than the model I have, and not helping things the differences between the Air and Pro (expandability aside) seem to be increasingly slim (pun intended). They all seem OK, but they're all slightly different from one another (re: RAM, core I5 or core I7 processor, etc.). Any guidance?
