yeah it's super stale old email-forward humor imo

the football team thing has been really striking to me because of the fact that they joined with the hunger striker.

there was a similar protest at my alma mater in the 90s, over the imminent renaming of a renovated building on campus after an alumna who had made statements in arguments made to southerners that women's suffrage (her cause) would actually bolster white supremacy, not harm it. iirc there might have been a couple other places people were able to dig up where she also voiced a similarly politically-expedient indifference to racial oppression, but before that point and after that point she apparently repudiated racism, so it was a hard charge to make stick very much or amount to anything that moved a lot of people. just the kind of thing easily brushed aside that makes committed administrators say 'in view of her large accomplishments we are very proud of our first woman graduate' etc., so despite complaints - and it's not like this person's past was a big public secret just come to light - the admins went forward.

there was a protest movement on campus in response, that lasted for a couple years, had a name, demands, went on marches around the quad, got faculty to sign on, hooked up with related grievances especially around diversity on campus. after repeated sit-ins and related challenges to get the president to actually even continue dialogue with them - he adopted the this-is-closed-we'-re-done-talking-about-this style of leadership - one of the students, a grad student iirc, went on a hunger strike that lasted for about six days before he had to be hospitalized. during that there was a shorter daylong sympathy hunger strike.

the admins didn't move an inch.

this was in the early days of widespread internet adoption, so you can still go on the campus newspaper site and read idiotic letters to the editor from fellow students. and it had state govt and national attention, got written up in the nyt. but on campus it just had a tendency to look a little pathetic, like posturing: people carrying signs and marching around our quad just utterly lacked a social/political context in the area that would have made it seem like an effectual action to take. they were relying almost entirely on the residual generic campus commitment to action in the service of progressive ideals, inchoate in most students and vaguely recalled by some of the faculty from their lives elsewhere. which was not enough to spark anything.

and it seems like it would have been unthinkable at the time that the football team would have been spurred to take any action at all, much less to do what the mizzou team did.

one of the earliest complaints i've found about the plan to rename the building after the shady alumna used the word 'comfortable'.

everything should be okay but once you get into the narrative of japan as a country in terminal decline, economy and culturally and artistically bankrupt, slowly drawing in on itself.... nationalistic politics with no strong alternative. a disturbing obsession with youth as the country ages and the birthrate falls. population decline. unwilling to look to the outside world. barely tolerating even total assimilation on the part of the few temporary immigrants. right wing sound trucks calling for a new constitution. the oceans dead and poisonous, slowly starving and then submerging the coasts. i mean, it be okay but i do find that version of japan's present and future fascinating.

y, the spurs game plan is as follows
(1) starters spend a few minutes trying to figure out who is going to be the main person taking long 2s (parker, lma, leonard) while everyone basically chants satanic things to gain hella defensive powers. limit the other team to about 8 points in 6 or 7 minutes.
(2) bench comes in and manu drinks goat blood to gain its mental acuity and fastness and basically coordinates telepathically with boris diaw who is the goat who donated blood for the cause to run the offense into a frenzy. the other players do not matter that much for they are mere vessels through which the dark lord does his work. so total scrub lifers like jonathan simmons do dope shit and and actually slow people who would make grandmothers impatient and shiftless like kyle anderson do dope shit and actual real xmen like boban come in and do dope shit and matt bonner does and1 mixtape shit now

The airforce don't really eat breakfast as a rule, but seem content to watch everything crash and burn, in a dont-give-a-fuck-we're-the-airforce kind of way.

i thought of a game where you have to maintain eye contact with faces contorted into expressions of grotesque agony and pain, thus causing them, gradually, to grow peaceful and content, and as you successfully progress the game keeps adding more and more faces in greater and greater excruciation until they are appearing too fast for you to look at any single one of them for long before your line of sight is obscured by a cluster of new, screaming faces, and you either a) quit or b) stop trying to process/heal every face and instead swerve your neck around trying for no particular reason to hold onto one or two specific ones until the game abruptly ends with no score or "achievements"

a lot of people watch everything with subtitles. idk i find it impossible cuz i can't stop reading the subtitles and it tends to obliterate the performances. i also watch everything w giant headphones tho, partly because i am surrounded by tiny, extremely loud frogs, so i sympathize w audio problems. but as for the slang, yeah, yr obv supposed to pick it up. (idk how subtitles are supposed to help w the slang. i was disappointed that independent article's guide wasn't a grunge-style joke.)
