"Do you like tiresome back and forths about authenticity in music? Then you'll love this ILM thread!"

What connections and insider leg-ups have they benefitted from? I don't know enough about The 1975's rise but it doesn't seem like Healy's parents would have much sway in the music industry.

the band did have a 6 month residency on Loose Women tbf

SKOA Shey: So, let's start simple, what made you guys want to start out as a band, you all started recording together quite young didn't you?

Matt Healy: Yeah, well me personally, my Dad's friends were in quite big bands, my Dad used to knock about with Dire Straights and things like that in the 80's. So I knew a lot of that crowd when I was a kid, so I suppose that was the first thing that I wanted to do, we just started playing in punk bands when we were 13/14.

It is to his credit that he does not hide the nepotism, I guess

His renditions of The La's 'There She Goes' and the Oasis classic 'Don't Look Back in Anger' had the crowds heaving in the school's main hall.

Stretching the definition of nepotism there.

impossible raver (Re-Make/Re-Model), Monday, 12 October 2015 17:25 (eight years ago) link

Given that they'd been together in one form or another for years before getting a deal, the nepotism didn't work all that well.

And, yes, they have an image. I thought pretty much all bands did. Has that become a bad thing now?

By the way, Turrican, could you tell us the truth about what happened on 9/11?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 12 October 2015 18:21 (eight years ago) link

afaict they had great, extremely insistent pr around the time the sex ep came out, that was probably a factor

they'd been together in one form or another for years before getting a deal

Well, it's apparent they were biding their time until they'd got their calculators out and perfected the optimum formula for their name, music, image, presentation, interview technique etc. I'm sure they were shrewd enough to realise that they'd only really have one shot once they got to a certain level, because christ did people like to remind Viva Brother that they used to be Kill The Arcade, so they took their time calculating and preparing everything to give the impression that they'd arrived fully formed. Very shrewd move to totally think things through like that.

Turrican, Monday, 12 October 2015 18:38 (eight years ago) link

the 1975 is a terrible band name

it is, yet somehow we're past it now. the usual reference point for this phenomenon being "the beatles" obv

in the 90s i had a theory that the worse the title of the techno record, the better the music was

the 1975 is a superlatively dope name for a band that sounds like 80's music imo

o hey they can do mbv-inflected balearic vibez q well, reminds me of Strategy a bit (were u a fan? surely)

twunty fifteen (imago), Thursday, 15 October 2015 08:23 (eight years ago) link

haha shit, they're not only still around but they had an album out this year

twunty fifteen (imago), Thursday, 15 October 2015 08:27 (eight years ago) link

Of Strategy I only know (but love) 'Future Rock'. I vaguely recall they went quite minimal ambient after that?

The reason I asked re "Haunt // Bed" is that, for me at least (and maybe others in this thread) that kind of thing was a big part of the initial attraction of this band, rather than they looked like they might become "pop royalty" or whatever. And there's a lot of material on their EPs in this general vein - "Facedown", "Intro/Set 3", "Undo", "Anobrain", "Fallingforyou". They even did this:
