i never knew that was don cherry on tullio de piscopo's "stop bajon" but now that i think about it, it totally makes sense

"wot shall i file this BALEARIC BEATS under?" so young joe public, y.t.s., go-getter at yo-price megastore hits his first problem in pigeon-holeing the black vinyl. now seeing that the only "MATEY" joe's "EVER GOT RIGHT ON" is the rubbery balloon type his guv'nor sells, i think we should explain this happy, happy, groove a little more.

now while it's true that the balearic beat was born in IBIZAN clubs, such as AMNESIA and PASHA, it's breeding took place in a small, sweaty, strobby, smokey south london club called ..... THE SHOOM. the hardcore original shoomers, along with another london club THE FUTURE, had discovered the JOY'S of balearic beats, during several previous "summers of love" (sic), and had brought the music and the attitude back to london with them. the kinectic style of dancing now associated with balearics ugly brother, ACID HOUSE, is pure ibizan in origin. The loudest screams at SPECTRUM are always reserved for NITZER EBB and the RESIDENTS while hearing ENZO AVITABILE booming through the smoke at JOY is an ecstatic experience one step away, (some say forward) from sex.

THE FINI TRIBE and MANDY SMITH have become anthems all over clubland, whilst my personal faves are the fast euro-rhythms of CODE 61 and the post-punk thrashing of THE WOODENTOPS. every track of this album will fill floors and put smiles on faces, Throughout the balearic underground. look, i wonder if poor joe's getting the gist of all this, for joe and the yet uninitiated, balearic is the following and much, much more.....

.....loads of hugs and kisses ... smiley t-shirts and happy faces.... feeling saucey instead of sauced......eating fruits on the dance floor....bashed up converse trainers.....lovely girls with blinding accents.....ice pops.....hedionism....sparklers at the future....indian belly dancers at the shoom....almost everyone finally realising that "only love can conquer hate"....watching the sun set at the café del mar....watching the sun rise on primrose hill....the karma collective....poncho's pony tails and body paint....dj alfredo....new friendships....loads more hugs and kisses....just let this piece of warm anglo-ibizan club culture rush over you, enjoy it mateys!!!

loves & respects to OAKEY, THE RAMPLINGS, GARY HAISMAN, JOHNNY WALKER, STEVE PROCTOR, NANCY NOISE, and to all those out there who truly "shoooom!!!"

xxx hugs and kisses xxx - farley.

"haha. you know that pylon link is just aggregating the links directly from my site? http://www.robotsinheat.com";

Apologies jaxon! I checked yr blog it is that good stuff.

I want to talk about Aeroplane again. Has anyone else ever in the history of anything ever come up with grooves as all-encompassing and epochal sounding as those on "Aeroplane", "Love Love Love (Aeroplane Remix)" and "Whispers"? I think not. The widescreen sparkliness reminds me somewhat of DJ T's "Freemind", but he only managed this once, not three times. Their dj mixes on the 24 hours blog are fabulous too.

Tim F, Friday, 30 May 2008 10:47 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the love love love rmx has been on nonstop repeat in my house for a month now--the original and the LSB soundsystem remixes are great too!

max, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:47 (fifteen years ago) link

"aeroplane" is a really appropriate name for these guys

max, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link

i like the das pop remix too ... although i find their stuff somewhat samey feeling. is it really such a feat to achieve the same thing 3 times or does that make them a one trick pony? i don't know how 'balearic' i think they are either. more like pretty straight forward 'nu disco' pop jams (which isn't the worst thing)

jaime, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

but it's the best trick ever!

Tim F, Friday, 30 May 2008 23:42 (fifteen years ago) link

To all balearic mixtapers out there, can I recommend the following unbeatable one two punch:

Invisible Conga People - Cable Dazed
Glissandro 70 - Bolan Muppets

They go together perfectly.

Tim F, Saturday, 31 May 2008 17:07 (fifteen years ago) link

in the series "balearic pops up in the most unexpected places", may I suggest you guys check out the 3rd movement of Steve Reich's 'Electric Counterpoint' (as played by Pat Metheny)

dr drunks

dmr, Sunday, 8 June 2008 08:28 (fifteen years ago) link

wow lovex3 (aeroplane mix) is so freaking irresistable

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:09 (fifteen years ago) link

most definitely...

good picks grady! add this one:

Dub Delay Band

that jam is sick, and I heard a rumour from a reputable source that Weatherall had something to do with it.

xpost to baaderonixx, you might recognize a swath Electric Counterpoint in a Balearic classic - The Orb's 'Little Fluffy Clouds' - or am I pointing out the obvious?

BATTAGS, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

swath *of*...

BATTAGS, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

haha - thanks, i'd never noticed!

baaderonixx, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

a little too aggressive to be Balearic but I don't know what else to put it under - Simone Fedi's "Yeah!" is awesome

listened to all the new Aeroplane stuff today at a record store (Pacific Air, Love Love Love rmx, the Kathy Diamond 12", maybe even one other one ... they've got a lot out now) but none of it hit me in the same way as that first 12". didn't end up buying any of em.

dmr, Monday, 9 June 2008 00:30 (fifteen years ago) link

you kerrrrrrrrazy!

BATTAGS, Monday, 9 June 2008 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

i dont love pacific air or the kathy diamond as much as the s/t trak and the LLL remix

max, Monday, 9 June 2008 01:19 (fifteen years ago) link

dmr, what record store has that stuff and listening stations? Etheria? Mondo Kims?

dan selzer, Monday, 9 June 2008 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Etherea is where I went today, they have tons of this stuff. Kims carries some of it but their dance section can be kinda disorganized I think.

on the other hand it seems like Etherea has higher prices, a lot of their import 12"s are $12.98-$13.98 ugghh. which contributed to my only buying one of em (the Simone Fedi on Eskimo).

dmr, Monday, 9 June 2008 04:46 (fifteen years ago) link

kathy diamond one is killer, i guess i have to check the others

deej, Monday, 9 June 2008 04:47 (fifteen years ago) link

The Kathy Diamond is killer. That, "Aeroplane" and the remix of "Love, Love, Love" are best I think.

Tim F, Monday, 9 June 2008 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i love those tracks but pacific air race is so... boring... in comparison!!!!

max, Monday, 9 June 2008 05:34 (fifteen years ago) link

there's also a Love Love Love - Soft Rocks Remix with Kathy Diamond that was pretty cool. the other side was a Still Going rmx that I wasn't that into

of course this is all first impressions just playchecking records real fast, I'm sure I might go back and change my mind on some of this stuff later

I also listened to the Tiedye records (the Metallica cover and the one with Feist) and they didn't do much for me. maybe I've just overloaded on this style a little bit. but as far as the other new stuff on Italians, this --

Invisible Conga People - Cable Dazed

is great

dmr, Monday, 9 June 2008 05:43 (fifteen years ago) link

icp is dope

max, Monday, 9 June 2008 05:58 (fifteen years ago) link

still going remix of love love love isnt great... but i like the original and the LSB soundsystem remix

max, Monday, 9 June 2008 05:59 (fifteen years ago) link

let's use a diff acronym maybe?

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 June 2008 06:00 (fifteen years ago) link

invisible conga are aight, i thought "cable dazed" was "pretty" but kinda zzzzz

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 June 2008 06:03 (fifteen years ago) link

aeroplane rmx of kathy diamond otoh...

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 June 2008 06:03 (fifteen years ago) link

lol m.o. for BALEARIC REVIVAL is "'pretty' but kinda zzzzz"

max, Monday, 9 June 2008 06:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean im jokin but u kno

max, Monday, 9 June 2008 06:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yah but invisble conga are kinda dark so they don't even have that a good vibe imo, at least not like a band like air france who make me happy even when they are (sometimes intentionally) zzzz

then again i've only heard "cable dazed" a few times a month or so ago, but idk it didn't seem like they have that many good ideas

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 June 2008 06:13 (fifteen years ago) link

let's use a diff acronym maybe?

haha! what, you don't like insane conga posse?

andrew m., Monday, 9 June 2008 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

it didn't seem like they have that many good ideas

it's really just one idea but krautrock + dubby house beats is a pretty good one imo, or at least hits the right buttons for me. I like "Weird Pains" more than "Cable Dazed"

dmr, Monday, 9 June 2008 16:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't really get the Lindsrom&Prins Thomas reference though.

i think 'turkish delight' from their collab qualifies (and is awesome)

poortheatre, Monday, 9 June 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

The point of "Cable Dazed" is to be kind of zzz though. It's very hypnotic - reminds me of Laika a bit. The section with the deliquescing synth arpeggios at the 3 minute mark is just magical.

"Weird Pains" was my jam for the entire second half of last year, I'm not sure which is better though.

Tim F, Monday, 9 June 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah this is what im saying--so much of this stuff (amo1, for example) is totally "pretty but kind of zzz." its part of what i really like about it (balearic revival), playing around the line btw. "hypnotic"/"meditative"/maybe even "lush" and "boring"/"soporific"/"kind of zzz." edging toward sleep-inducing--without falling totally into it--thats a big component of this aesthetic, i think

max, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:27 (fifteen years ago) link

is it just me who thinks that any song automatically seems better once it shows up on a Balaeric mix?...

henry s, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i think music in general has sounded better after my exposure to Balearic

poortheatre, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:17 (fifteen years ago) link

wow just discovered that too hard aeroplane coyote remix and i am lovin it!

s1ocki, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 03:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I just bought that Ministry of Sound Fred Deakin Balearic thing on iTunes and I guess it's probably BLRC 101 (or even not totally relevant) to the vets on this thread, but I am liking a lot of it. Good deal, too - 10 pounds and you get both discs of individual tracks plus both discs mixed.

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 06:35 (fifteen years ago) link

The new mix on Beats in Space by Balearic Mike is ace. Having a bloody mary here in SF and the weather is just fine for these tunes. It's good because it goes out a little from the usual tried and tested balearic sonic palette, reaches out to some Brazilian stuff, some folk-rock Balearic, makes the mix that Quiet Village did for RA look tepid in comparison.
