SWOON!

ddb, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

pinning is cool. some time in the mid 90s rebecca twigg broke her collarbone 11 days before worlds. she had it plated/pinned, then won a gold medal and set WR in a her pursuit race. badass.

Hunt3r, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

oh, 1 hour this morning EASY spins, nice and cold out

cutty, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:27 (sixteen years ago) link

MY RIDE THIS MORNING WAS PEPPERED WITH A SWEET ALTERCATION WITH A LIVERY DRIVER WHO TOLD ME THAT HE SHOULD RUN ME OVER...THEN I CAUGHT HIM AT THE LIGHT AND CALLED HIM A FAT PIECE OF SHIT....WHICH WAS NICE.

ddb, Friday, 7 December 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

No pins...I was kinda looking forward to being part man/part machine haha.

awesome day yesterday:

-- woke up a little hungover (a first since i've been a courier)
-- the streets were remarkably dry and ridable after getting 4 inches overnight
-- was late for work, but the dispatchers all love me now so it doesn't matter
-- CHEESEBALL, BUT: morning light on the Gehry bandshell, dusted with snow, as I'm coming down Washington Ave = v v pretty
-- ended up getting lost on some delivery up norf, ended up in the middle of a residential neighborhood with.......horses? seriously, right in the middle of the hood: huge lot with large draft horses roaming around. it was o_O and awesome and perfect.
-- the reason i got lost was because some streets in chicago have different, vanity/historical names. eg - Clark St., a major Chicago street can alternately be referred to as Sandberg Terrace for, like, a 5 block stretch. consequently, condo associations who want to have a more fashionable sounding address ("Clark" is so boring! THOUSANDS of places have addresses on Clark St!) opt for the alternate address, making my life very difficult.
-- went to the messenger bar and actually made friends, which was nice. ended up charging up to this mexican restaurant/karaoke place in my neighborhood (about 7 miles) in a fucking paceline in a headwind, slightly drunk. these guys were "taking it easy" (cat 3 CX racers) and while I didn't get broken off, I was still totally exhausted when we finally showed up. then I had two margaritas and sang Folsom Prison Blues in front of a bunch horrified Mexicans.
-- doddled home around 11.30, sat down on my couch, cracked a beer, had exactly one sip, and fell asleep sitting up and fully clothed. now i am going out to buy orange juice!

Cheeseball indeed, I am looking forward to seeing that and the bean in the snow.

I miss Chicago. Watching downhill skiing on my trainer sounded like a good idea except some poor woman half killed herself on the first run and the next half hour was a lot of concerned people with stretchers milling about.

Mark C, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:59 (sixteen years ago) link

on bike around 7-ish last night. first time on for a couple of weeks. went for an aimless trip along bike path, then took nice leafy run into the city proper on main road w/ bike lane. doubled back past melbourne uni, then back home again on side streets. took a bit over an hour, all up? not very intense, was going fairly briskly on the run into the city though. i really need a new battery for the '7-function cyclocomputer', i'm really bad at estimating distances, speed, etc.

2 hrs on the trainer whilst watching stage 3 of paris-nice 2007

cutty, Sunday, 16 December 2007 17:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Trainer work yesterday proved that 8 days without riding = a 5% reduction in performance. Sucks.

Mark C, Monday, 17 December 2007 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

anyways, there are no usage restrictions on my 4 holed wing. "as pain allows." im like, incredibly able to do things i can actively raise it to near parallel to ground. i could totally ride on it i think. the streets are v icy tho. do i commute on it? do i ride to my postop doc appointment? im on day 4 up in here. what u think iltrmb?

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 17:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Have spent most of this week cycling to and from work drinks totally hosed.

I have borrowed skiwear for Park City. Cycled home in the goggles tonight. Twilight visibility would have been excellent, but it was like 3am.

caek, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 04:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Not directly related to my biking but we are mooting a plkan to go and watch the Paris Roubaix in the Trouée d'Arenberg in April. Day trip including a large french dinner.

A PROMISE: I'm at my dad's house for over a week and I will have some picturesque shots for you guys.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, in chicago tomorrow, more riding on the lake.

All can come to the Paris Roubaix.

Ed, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

i dont care how much dope theyre on i wanna see that someday for the sheer spectacle. looking down that long gradual incline with the lion of flanders and other banners streaming out, and down on the cobbles, or in the mud of the siding, total chaos. and then impossibly a very small group of riders exits onto the tarmac. for the rest, carnage, a desperate chase, or just sit up and look for a car.

Hunt3r, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:32 (sixteen years ago) link

sorry i have been slacking on the log

flying down a desolate bike path along an arroyo
slow burbling creek on my left
train tracks and occasional freighter on my right
80 degrees and huffin
back tire blows out
enough to blow the bead out and over the rim
"hello? hi it's Steve. yeah uh... can someone come get me?"

guys guys i just went on a tandem for the first time EVER, awesome fun! only like 25 or 30km around country lanes in the dordogne but so ace!

emsk, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 15:50 (sixteen years ago) link

No riding today, but- 20 mins ago in treacherous riding conditions:

me: *walking on v. v. icy/snow sidewalk, crossing over dedicated bus lane as bus approaches. move a foot or so to left to ensure not being hit by bus*

small voice behind me: "on your left" *nearly simultaneous bike crash sound*

me: *look over shoulder, prepare to ask "are you ok?"*

little woman in balaclava on _decked_ Primus Mootry cx rig: *picking self up* "Oh, gee thanks."

me: *dander rising* "was i in your way?"

lwodpmcb: "i said 'on your left'!"

me: "WHAT!? WHY ARE YOU ON THE SIDEWALK? WHY ARE _YOU_ EVEN ON A BIKE? DON'T TRY TO LAY THAT ON ME. nice cross bike tho." *spins on heel, continues walking."

its the most smugly self-righteous ive been in... hours, i was angry and embarrassed at the same time. im sure to her i just looked like some douchebag in a suit.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

i visited my pops in south carolina and got to some biking! 12 miles or so, which is just about how long i can go before getting bored.

i started out riding my stepmom's Giant bike, which is sweet, then switched and rode my dad's pedal-backwards-to-brake bike. also my dad fell off his bike once.
