my guess is he was trying to get all the patriots to line up on the side then run the ball straight into outer space?

he did say they werent aligned properly so maybe there were suposed to be more dudes near the ball idk

with the swinging gate the qb is supposed to be in some sort of super deep shotgun otherwise he will just get tackled so maybe that was the problem
