YOUNG THUG vs FUTURE

goddamn these threads are depressing as everybody works through the same script they have a thousand times before. deej comes out of nowhere telling people they're underrating chief keef, lex comes out of nowhere telling people they're underrating angel haze, etc etc.

No ones arguing about chief keef tho u dork, although it is funny that baltimore's biggest rapper has a song called of all things "OTM" over supposedly non influential drill artist King Louie's "BON" beat

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 18:57 (eight years ago) link

"out the mud" is supposedly a chicago thing now!? anyway the only thing i ever wrote about young moose was all about how derivative he is of rap from other cities

you literally introduced keef into the discussion apropos of nothing, that's indisputable.

some dude, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:06 (eight years ago) link

just because you personally guard the reputation of every rapper from chicago doesn't mean i give a shit what people say about whoever from baltimore, how do you still think that after 10 years of trying that shit

some dude, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link

Otm is funny bc of ilx not Chicago

I don't personally guard Chicago rappers reputations lol wtf are you even talking about

if you don't realize this is a response to your posts on the hip hop thread about how no one cares about Chicago artists outside Chicago you're being willfully ignorant.

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:21 (eight years ago) link

"i don't personally guard chicago rappers reputations, i'm just still mad that 7 months ago you dared to suggest kanye west having a lot of people onstage with him was not an homage to chief keef"

some dude, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

That conversation is about chicagos influence in general which you've continually denied, thought maybe your own hometown artists literally picking up on it jacking for beats might make you reconsider but keep doing you

i never said chicago didn't move the needle, but of course that's how it sounds to you if i say that maybe rick ross taking off his shirt in a video doesn't have anything to do w/ chief keef

...the video that is an explicit callback to the 'i dont like' video ... ok

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 20:34 (eight years ago) link

we can't have this conversation again

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 November 2015 20:41 (eight years ago) link

anyway on topic i dont think there's anything wrong with people liking young thug & future and listening to them a lot

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link

That could've been option number 3.

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

I would vote for that.

they *literally* do the dance from 'dont like' in the video some dude

ross bit lil reese's 'beef' flow for his song on jay z's album and talked about doing 'the money dance' the next summer how can you *possibly* find this farfetched?

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 22:11 (eight years ago) link

lol ross is even wearing the same belt in those screen caps

This is not a scientific answer to the question, but anecdotally I've heard Thug blaring out of cars in two different cities today, vs zero for Future.

something totally new, it’s the AOR of the twenty first century (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 5 November 2015 01:57 (eight years ago) link

interesting. i hear a lot of Future in the wild but Thug's mainstream presence has been a little muted this year, all he's had on the radio is the 3rd verse on a Rae Sremmurd single, vs. last year when there were 3-4 pretty huge songs where Young Thug was the only performer or did the hook and first verse.

some dude, Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:35 (eight years ago) link

i'm not suggest Rick Ross has never heard or been influenced by Chicago rap, i'm just suggesting that searching for vague signs of influence in a video shot outside in New Orleans projects, full of the tropes of a million NOLA rap videos, is funny.

some dude, Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:36 (eight years ago) link

and im suggesting there was no 'searching' involved, it was immediately obvious that this was what he was doing & the new orleans thing—almost a decade after the last time someone shot a noteworthy video in NO projects—was a very obvious attempt to avoid being seen as biting

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:45 (eight years ago) link

i still hear future out of cars all the time of course, young thug i've started to hear more of lately

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 5 November 2015 02:45 (eight years ago) link

so rick ross shot his video in new orleans just to throw people off the scent of his true influence which is obviously chicago?

based grandpa (noz), Thursday, 5 November 2015 04:50 (eight years ago) link

I'm not inside his head? But it doesn't seem remotely farfetched, vs shirtless crew videos where everyone does the shawty lo dance weren't exactly common pre idl. I mean he was on keef's record it was the biggest story this year I don't get why this seems like such a long shot to either of you other than trolling

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 5 November 2015 09:04 (eight years ago) link

It's also just what big artists do to create popular records, flip underground ideas on a main stage, isn't this the same as drake biting herb Louie and Gucci flows? This happens all the time!

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 5 November 2015 09:06 (eight years ago) link

I listened to Barter 6 again this morning and while it's got it's moments, yep it's definitely not what I want from YT.

Hadn't stopped to think about this but this is surprising. Barter 6 was deliberately singles-adverse, but you'd have thought at least a few of the mixtape tracks or other features would have hit

Evan R, Thursday, 5 November 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link

what about good times? i hear that on urban radio all the time

marcos, Thursday, 5 November 2015 14:59 (eight years ago) link

i heard it on one of the local rap stations once or twice (and it appeared at one point that 300 was pushing it as an advance single for Hitunes), but it never got on the airplay charts.

some dude, Thursday, 5 November 2015 15:05 (eight years ago) link

Yeah that song hasn't gotten much airplay here either, which doesn't surprise me as it doesn't sound like a hit IMO

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 5 November 2015 18:26 (eight years ago) link

ok yea it's actually been on my local pirate radio that does a lot of rap/dancehall/rnb and somewhat less commercial stuff (though like hotline bling is still played every hour), it's not boston's hot 97 for instance though, i haven't heard it on boston's more commercial urban stations

marcos, Thursday, 5 November 2015 18:46 (eight years ago) link

it sounds better in a rap radio context than i expected it to tbh, it wouldn't have shocked me if it did happen to take off

some dude, Thursday, 5 November 2015 19:02 (eight years ago) link

well 102.7 jamz in north carolina was playing it & they break a lot of records these days

so its possible

i do agree that in certain contexts it works

i like popcaan's parts a lot

Jamie xx is a little corny imo and that feels very apparent when I hear good times despite popcaan's and yt's parts , overall though I dig the song

marcos, Sunday, 8 November 2015 01:11 (eight years ago) link

love thugs verse on good times but at some point towards the end of the song various parts of it start looping around unnaturally and it all suddenly strikes me as terribly corny and british

tpp, Sunday, 8 November 2015 18:08 (eight years ago) link

still haven't heard slime 2 but i spent the week listening to slime 1 and i update my ordering

barter 6 > slime season

barter 6 is underwhelming at first (first and last song aside) but i think the flows and hooks on that album are really genius if you can get accustomed to the more subdued vibe of the music overall

flopson, Sunday, 8 November 2015 23:46 (eight years ago) link

i really really like the last song on slime season 1
