Though LOL at "you used to have a race straight out a magazine" and "I never found love in the city".

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:11 (eight years ago) link

They... Can't seriously propose to pass "She's American" off as a new song can they?

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 21:22 (eight years ago) link

"change of heart"'s lyrics are all crazy good (when you were coming across as clever / and you lit the wrong end of a cigarette)

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:37 (eight years ago) link

^^^^ Yeah I bet there's some amazing stuff that simply won't see the light of day as a result.

OTOH, OMG at "Somebody Else".

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:41 (eight years ago) link

lol i'm already wearing this album out

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:46 (eight years ago) link

yeah that was pretty cool again, they're not a one-trick band at all - and whatever they do, they do with exceptional sonic boldness, which is nice & suits them

avant-garde, sissy bounce, zombie rave, aquacrunk, warlock, oceangrunge, (imago), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 23:38 (eight years ago) link

wow all those new songs sound great

ufo, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:20 (eight years ago) link

The Sound is apparently the next single and deservedly

ufo, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:24 (eight years ago) link

"she's american" sounds like every song off the first album boiled down to one track but it also sounds lighter than air i'm very down

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 November 2015 01:52 (eight years ago) link

i already deeply love this song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 November 2015 02:02 (eight years ago) link

[Chorus]
And she likes to kiss but just don't eat
It was so intense, yeah, she's American
And she says I gotta fix my teeth
Man she's so American, she's American
And she likes to kiss but just don't eat
Socially elegant, she's American
And she says I gotta fix my teeth
Man she's so American

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 11 November 2015 02:06 (eight years ago) link

head-shaking lol

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 03:15 (eight years ago) link

Yeah the moment I saw the name of that song I thought the same thing.

cpl593H, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 13:39 (eight years ago) link

repeating that face from a magazine motif from "she way out" i see

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:44 (eight years ago) link

from "robbers"! + additional references to "the city" and "sex"

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:48 (eight years ago) link

magazine motif repetition already felt lazy by "she way out", at least it seems deliberate here.

In the live performance the lyric that jumped out at me was "You said I'm full of diseases / your eyes were full of regret".

Because Matt's lyrics are such a mash of dialogue it's often hard to know who's saying what about whom, though.

Tim F, Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:52 (eight years ago) link

and then you took a picture of your salad and put it on the internet

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 22:56 (eight years ago) link

Got 3500 words with the boy Healy, talking about the new album, and drugs, and his "breakdown" and lots of other things in the paper.
My two favourite songs from the new album aren't being played live: Paris is part Only You, part Every Breath You Take, part self loathing; If I Believe You is a big deep soul ballad about atheism, but done with electronics instead of horns.

Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Thursday, 12 November 2015 13:14 (eight years ago) link

Sorry: I should have said piece is published on Sunday. 3500 online 2200 in print.

Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Thursday, 12 November 2015 13:15 (eight years ago) link

Odd thing: in the piece I said Healy's lyrics reminded in a peculiar way of Craig Finn. Who also references back to earlier songs all the time. I wrote that before seeing the Change of Heart lyrics.

i couldn't be more thrilled to discover one of the new songs is called "ugh"

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Sunday, 15 November 2015 16:28 (eight years ago) link

lol honestly that piece makes him sound like an utter moron

art baengels (monotony), Monday, 16 November 2015 10:25 (eight years ago) link

ithappens i was looking at your other interview with him (linked in the new one) and i'm really curious whether the slip here is his, can you confirm:

Until late last year he was still living at home. Then, as he puts it, "my band took off, my family fell apart. My parents got divorced. It's kinda good – no good marriage ever ended in divorce. If two people had a really good thing going on and they had to get divorced, that would be really sad. But that's never happened once. That's fine. That was a long time coming. December of last year I went on tour and they sold that house. I went home for two days to move out of my house, and I wrote and recorded Is There Somebody Who Can Watch Me?, the last song on the album, about that moment.
