I used to work with someone whose wife looked like him in a wig. It was rather disconcerting.

Saw two new Tesco ones yesterday - in the first the son tries to pick up a woman closer to his mother's age than his, and the second is about 'gluten free' and how stupid the son is.

That "pick-up" one is the most cringe-inducing and yukky ad ever.

this sounds promising at least

Based on many commercials that I see these days, I'm led to believe that ad execs find most people stupid and loathesome and also believe that most people find one another (and, presumably, themselves) stupid and loathesome.― Gary (Old Lunch), Tuesday, November 10, 2015 8:05 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

ad execs playing off superiority complex of most people thinking most other people are stupid and loathesome. also likely playing off our superiority towards the ads themselves. not only are we smarter than the idiots portrayed in these ads, we are smarter than the people making the ads. of course we still feel a tiny bit of gratitude for the ads for indulging our sad egos.

there's an ad for a new phone app for your refrigerator that shows you what is inside. there are a few commercials for it but one involved an insufferable couple; he is at a grocery store, she is literally standing in front of the refrigerator, and he asks her if they are out of eggs. she can't turn around because she is scooping out a watermelon (to which he says "I know, you're an artist!"). both these people would lose their heads if they weren't attached at the neck.

oh, they are real people all right, carefully screened and auditioned, then handed their lines and allowed as many takes as were required to get the shots the director wanted. but they don't belong to the Screen Actors Guild and weren't paid at scale. hence, not actors.

US: i really don't like the subway commercials where people use the names of subway sandwiches as metonymy for the specific weekdays they are the "subs of", and the beaming new father says his daughter was "born on chicken teriyaki day". have more than once seen this scheduled back-to-back w the "food you want to fork" commercial about wanting to fuck food and the world thus sketched is an unhealthy one.

When I was in America recently I saw the same ad about a hundred times where a guy is at a hipster fondue party but he doesn't want any of their fancy-pants food because he's bought a fucking Taco Bell burrito with him. You know, like you would if you were going to a party where you knew there was going to be food. And he's so smug about it, it makes me annoyed on behalf of the snobby hipster characters the ad is trying to show up.

the genre of advert where someone does something banal and it's presented in an ironically heroic way is pretty much always terrible, but there's something particularly insulting about the laziness/lack of inspiration on display here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GHLTDIOmog
the money supermarket ads have obviously popularised it, but I feel like there was an earlier specific ad that started this bad trend, I can't remember what it was, though.
― soref, Sunday, 23 October 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link
I suppose you don't have the Bud Light Real Men of Genius/Real American Heroes ads over there--an entire campaign in the "banal things treated as heroic" genre
