One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 15:16 (eight years ago) link

one month passes...

so we haven't had a post-Ned arrival FAP, which feels wrong. when are people free?

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:51 (eight years ago) link

really? no one?

Οὖτις, Friday, 8 January 2016 17:39 (eight years ago) link

Usually free on Sundays...

schwantz, Friday, 8 January 2016 17:44 (eight years ago) link

Sorry, been busy here (and did get your note, thanks Shakey). Um...let's see. Generally Saturday afternoons are good, though this month only next Saturday is free (and I have to check my schedule for sure).

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 January 2016 18:45 (eight years ago) link

This said, Sundays can work too!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 January 2016 18:45 (eight years ago) link

sounds like we should shoot for maybe a Sunday next month? I know schwantz and I can't do next Saturday

Οὖτις, Friday, 8 January 2016 18:48 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, maybe the first weekend of the month. The 7th, I think?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 January 2016 18:51 (eight years ago) link

I think I'm free the 7th

Οὖτις, Friday, 8 January 2016 19:08 (eight years ago) link

Um that's the Super Bowl, so I'm sure YOU are free. Maybe not me... We could do Super Bowl party at my place for people who don't give that much of a shit...?

schwantz, Friday, 8 January 2016 19:12 (eight years ago) link

oh sportsballpaws

Οὖτις, Friday, 8 January 2016 19:24 (eight years ago) link

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 15 January 2016 00:24 (eight years ago) link

I never liked that place tbh

Οὖτις, Friday, 15 January 2016 00:27 (eight years ago) link

i worked at the berkeley one and I agree with you

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 15 January 2016 00:30 (eight years ago) link

t or f, poly, the owner is a legendary asshole?

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 15 January 2016 00:31 (eight years ago) link

I liked the Berkeley store fine, that Powell location was just strange and uncomfortable, terrible location etc. But back when Amoeba/Rasputin's on Telegraph were the biggest record stores in the area I would drive up from Santa Cruz to get stuff. Once Amoeba opened up their SF shop though, I never really bothered w Rasputin's again (not even the one on Haight St)

xp

Οὖτις, Friday, 15 January 2016 00:32 (eight years ago) link

i would run in there when i needed a king diamond shirt in an emergency. it was nice to have a place to get a king diamond shirt in union square.

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 15 January 2016 00:33 (eight years ago) link

that Powell location was just strange and uncomfortable, terrible location etc.

It was the worst one by far, but not too surprising given what a shithole Powell is imo

legendary is a bit strong. he's definitely a bizarre guy. Never once saw him wear a shirt that he paid for. Doesn't know a damned thing about music (or pizza for that matter).

I would always go to rasputin in san jose until I realized streetlight records was closer and kinda better. We werent cool enough for an amoeba.

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 15 January 2016 01:59 (eight years ago) link

I worked at the Berkeley Rasputin's for one day!

Sofialo Ren (Leee), Friday, 15 January 2016 02:09 (eight years ago) link

berkeley rasputin's these days has an amazing vinyl collection, much better than Berkeley Amoeba I'm sad to say. I think Ken is opening a big store across the street in the old cody's location to sell vinyl which I assume is why he closed the powell st store. I only went there on the off chance I was on the street; it wasn't particularly well stocked.

akm, Friday, 15 January 2016 03:17 (eight years ago) link

xp - There's a rasputin's in san Jose? When I was growing up, it was just Streetlight (and lol the Wherehouse), and Streetlight was cool. Also, there wasn't a Rasputin's in the Haight when I lived there ... I feel like if I were to move out of Oakland, they would then open a store there.

sarahell, Friday, 15 January 2016 22:36 (eight years ago) link

Campbell, technically.

RIP cinecave: http://blog.sfgate.com/inthemission/2016/01/20/sf-missions-lost-weekend-video-to-relocate-to-within-alamo-drafthouse/

I'm hopeful that this is a good move for them, but bummed we'll lose the Cinecave which has def been one of my fave places in the city since it opened

Οὖτις, Thursday, 21 January 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

the conversation moved on, but I used to work at the campbell rasputin. it was not very fun. and it was a lousy record store. streetlight was great though, and I'd love to go back and see if it's still as good as it used to be.

chinavision!, Thursday, 21 January 2016 20:18 (eight years ago) link

wait I thought all the streetlight stores are gone now

Οὖτις, Thursday, 21 January 2016 20:20 (eight years ago) link

the sf one did but not sj or santa cruz

chinavision when did you work there? I worked there summer 2000.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 21 January 2016 20:23 (eight years ago) link

t or f, poly, the owner is a legendary asshole?

I worked security at the Berkeley store in the summer of 1991. We would groan if Ken arrived halfway through the evening shift, because he wouldn't leave at closing time, and nobody else could leave then either. He'd want impromptu stocktakes done, or he'd shout at everybody about how much money we were losing, or something. But if he came in first thing in the morning he would buy donuts and coffee for everyone and not speak to us at all, which we obviously loved.
I seem to remember he paid for the green-card wedding of two of the employees too, and put a credit card behind the bar on the night of their wedding to make the whole thing look more legit, which was nice.

trishyb, Friday, 22 January 2016 15:53 (eight years ago) link

I used to have great memories of getting high as balls, hopping on the local bus in santa clara to the san jose amtrak, get on the bus to santa cruz and walk over to the streetlight records to fuck around whilst waiting for my friends who were ucsc students to come by and pick me up

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:45 (eight years ago) link

proximity to the SC bus station was def a plus

Οὖτις, Friday, 22 January 2016 19:51 (eight years ago) link

I lived in SC for one year during the first dotcom boom, when it was impossible to find housing in SF (but not as impossible as it is today). I spent a lot of time and money at the SC Streetlight. Later I moved to SF (after the bust) at 16th and Castro, just uphill from the SF Streetlight. I remember walking down the hill one afternoon, buying a Go-Betweens album and then an hour later returning to buy the rest of the titles they had.

I also remember long conversations with buyers from both the SF Streetlight and the Powell Rasputin. Those must have been awesome jobs. I hope they found new awesome ones.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 January 2016 21:30 (eight years ago) link

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 28 January 2016 21:35 (eight years ago) link

sarahell, Thursday, 28 January 2016 23:21 (eight years ago) link

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 January 2016 23:25 (eight years ago) link

Οὖτις, Thursday, 28 January 2016 23:25 (eight years ago) link

lol yeah

sarahell, Thursday, 28 January 2016 23:28 (eight years ago) link

but i confused it with 221, which was the high rise tower that D'Angelo Barksdale was dealing drugs in at the very beginning of The Wire.

sarahell, Thursday, 28 January 2016 23:29 (eight years ago) link
