00's high water mark bond (I would watch a mark bond movie) is casino royale as far as the poker game. Downwards sharply after that.

Felt like a perfectly anonymous Brosnan-era movie. Maybe The World Is Not Enough? I never ever want to see a super-hacker in a Bond movie - especially if it's Q.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 04:23 (eight years ago) link

ur insane

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 04:27 (eight years ago) link

Nah, super hackers are always terrible. Exception that proves the rule: Nathalie Emmanuel in Fast & Furious 7.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 10:39 (eight years ago) link

Mr Robot is a whole show about a super hacker which manages to be not terrible.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 10:41 (eight years ago) link

Only just, tbrr

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 10:46 (eight years ago) link

Fair point (tho I haven't watched it) - super hackers in a film where they're just an adjunct to a filling progress bar are terrible.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 10:49 (eight years ago) link

At least we didn't get stupid cackling-skull graphics this time like in Skyfall.

(minor spoilers for Sherlock and Spectre) Kinda funny/sad that Andrew Scott pretends to be a superhacker in Sherlock when he's really got moles everywhere, but in this "spy" movie he actually manages to hack into every private camera.

very disappointed that all possible spa hijinks were reduced to one juicing joke.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:06 (eight years ago) link

also, the anti-privacy villain should have been nathan barley, not moriarty.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:08 (eight years ago) link

haven't seen that actor in anything lately, that would have been good

honestly was disappointed that he didn't use the moriarty voice

I enjoyed this but I always get annoyed at the whole "SOFTWARE IS GOING ONLINE IN FIFTEEN MINUTES" trope in films.

this isn't Skynet. Couldn't they just like....turn it off even if it goes live for like 2 hours, after they've removed the imminent threat?

oh noes Moriarty saw my grandpa in the shower briefly

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 19 November 2015 00:33 (eight years ago) link

do you know what a pain it is to roll back software that's been released to production?

μpright mammal (mh), Thursday, 19 November 2015 01:45 (eight years ago) link

my company seems to do it every October so...

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 19 November 2015 01:50 (eight years ago) link

lol u guys this was so bad

resulting post (rogermexico.), Saturday, 21 November 2015 19:51 (eight years ago) link

goes sideways with the opening credits/theme and then just... keeps... going... sideways. the decade-long slide that began with the closing credits of casino royale

what a waste of bellucci and batista

resulting post (rogermexico.), Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:00 (eight years ago) link

It was shocking yeah, but I'm not sure how much more they could have done with Batista tbf

Number None, Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:05 (eight years ago) link

his intro was only moment where this thing threatened to come alive, but after that it was all anonymous mustache-twirling villainy and Jaws callbacks.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:15 (eight years ago) link

dunno what else you expected really. The guy's not an actor. His role in GOTG was essentially based around him being terrible at saying words

Number None, Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:21 (eight years ago) link

Like The Rock, the guy has a ton of charisma from his wrestling days - he can definitely be used much better. Deserves more credit for perf in GOTG IMO

Nhex, Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:23 (eight years ago) link

Rock had way more conventional acting talent though.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:31 (eight years ago) link

i dunno christoph waltz is an actor and batista was def more watchable

resulting post (rogermexico.), Saturday, 21 November 2015 20:35 (eight years ago) link

harsh but probably true!

Nhex, Saturday, 21 November 2015 21:40 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I don't like Lana Del Rey, but I'm sure could whack out a miles better Bond theme than the one we got.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

she is so blatantly right for it. the latest album has 3/4 songs that are classic bond songs without even trying. sam smith. whatever.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:10 (eight years ago) link

Holding out for Goldfrapp myself.

XP One of which has a blatant lift from "You Only Live Twice".

Boz Scaggs was Adele back in 1976 (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:49 (eight years ago) link

sam smith's spectre song sucks but the instrumentation really worked well in the movie theatre.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Thursday, 10 December 2015 23:36 (eight years ago) link

one month passes...

this movie was so. fucking. terrible.

terrible opening credits - the song was sooooo lame, the visuals were extra lame.

just about every piece of dialog was so tired and cliched.

i kept seeing monica bellucci billed as 'the bond girl' but she's in it for all of 2 minutes.

poor waltz is never going to play any other character than a smug asshole.

and daniel craig is a lame bond.

just1n3, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 04:31 (eight years ago) link

i was with you till that last bit. casino royale is still tight.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 04:32 (eight years ago) link

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 05:08 (eight years ago) link

he's my favorite bond

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 05:08 (eight years ago) link

his face annoys me, and i don't mean "annoys" me, either

just1n3, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 05:20 (eight years ago) link

the only good thing about this movie is bond moving across the rooftops in the opening sequence with total poise and assurance - craig is remarkably graceful

otherwise it was shit, obv

Butt here is always time for the John Mayer Trio or Sting. (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 10:25 (eight years ago) link

Any analysis of the movie that ignores Dave Bautista's gleefully murderous henchman is a little lacking, I think.

Basically though Daniel Craig is good at playing a version of Bond that I have no interest in watching, even as murder machines go Bourne was at least charming.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:13 (eight years ago) link

I think I just uncritically like movies like this about 90% of the time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

except Sam Worthington movies, those are almost always reliably terrible

its subtle brume (DJP), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 14:43 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I occasionally wonder about him - what would it be like to star in, and be completely incidental to, the biggest movie of all time?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 14:55 (eight years ago) link

he was in Titanic?

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 15:07 (eight years ago) link

he played Kathy Bates

The iceberg is more his speed tbrr.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 15:21 (eight years ago) link

if only worthington could muster a fraction of the charisma of that iceberg

i suggest Daniel Craig go back to being a gay sex object in films like Love Is the Devil.

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 15:56 (eight years ago) link

maybe we should poll the least charismatic leading men of the last decade or so - worthington, jai courtney, taylor lautner, alex pettyfer...

boy yeah, armie hammer is not as bad as worthington imo but there's another guy hollywood decided needed to happen and you feel bad for everyone involved.
