But seriously: watch me carefully if you are interested -- I don't pick on people for shits and giggles. I go full on hardcore in certain situations, but never just cruelly.

x-post to d-mac: Oh, I don't suggest that any sane person would have any reason to observe the methodologies of my verbal bombings, just that if you were nuts enough to analyze them, you'd see I don't attack people out of nowhere to hurt them.

dum-dums

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 8 December 2015 19:48 (eight years ago) link

Dum-dum is a silly word. I used it in the singular on someone who missed my point utterly and mocked me sarcastically. I am sorry if you read dum-dum with a straight face -- I can't say it that way!

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 8 December 2015 19:52 (eight years ago) link

you use it all the time

Yes, I use the word dum-dum all the time. It is a very very mild expression of derision, and is intended as such. Ya dum-dum. (The first two sentences are response, the third is the one I had second thoughts about and decided not to post.)

mh have u ever used a stronger expression than dum-dum to register disapproval on ilx

And by ever I mean this week

usually subtly indicate I think someone is a festering wound more subtly, not really into bold gestures

also I'm still doubling down on adjectives

The delegates perceived dumdum bullets as having
similar effects to a projectile that carried explosive material. Debate centred
on whether such bullets “aggravate wounds and increase the suffering of the
wounded” and whether a bullet causing “such enormous ravages in the body,
its entrance being very small, but its exit very large” was “necessary.” The
British delegate agreed with their technical understanding of the effects of
the dumdum bullet, but argued that “there is a difference in war between
civilised nations and that against savages” and that the use of dumdum bullets
was justified against “the savage” who “although run through two or
three times, does not cease to advance”. This was seen by other members of
the Sub-Commission as being “contrary to the humanitarian spirit”. The
President of the Sub-Commission expressed “the opinion of the assembly in
saying that there can be no distinction established between projectiles permitted
and the projectiles prohibited according to the enemies against which
they fight even in the case of savages”.

the plural is "Dums-dum", is it not?

(Which sort-of answers the previous question)

Mark G, Wednesday, 9 December 2015 10:59 (eight years ago) link

It's always jarring, that reminder that although you use the same words, you really don't speak the same language.

That when a man says "that person makes me uncomfortable" he thinks "ugh, that annoying guy in the office that is kinda irritating" but when a woman says "that person makes me uncomfortable" she means "I'm afraid that he will respond to a minor incident by following me to my car, or finding my home address and publishing it to Reddit or ..." And the awful resulting suspicion that when a white person says "that person makes me uncomfortable" they mean "that person makes me think things about myself I'd rather not have to confront" but when a black person says "that person makes me uncomfortable" they mean "I am afraid that person is gonna call cops who are likely to be heavily armed and ..."

But that's OK. It's just the word they don't like! Honest!

actually those threads wherein professional music critics jockey for relevance don't suck at all. they're endlessly entertaining and fascinating to all.

Like u guys know I'm mainly on friendly terms w all the ppl in those threads? Like give or take a superficial beef w forks it's really just like, ppl having opinions and making arguments

I like the danity Kane thread that was a good discussion, found rtc's posts esp illuminating, different points of view clashing, fun times imo
