British Public Domain?

Never heard of it.

Mark G, Monday, 28 December 2015 23:25 (eight years ago) link

Music that's public domain in the UK, which makes for cheap export CDs and now LPs from labels like Proper, One Day Music etc.

I rolled the dice on a copy of Hooker's Burnin' on the Waxtime label. Two bonus tracks and a download code...will report back.

^^Sooo...audio quality pretty good...packaging less so (separated about a half an inch of the back cover from the front when opening the shrink warp with my thumb).

Verdict: Could have been better, but not at this pricepoint.

Future issues will cost £15 apparently.

Finally, a jazz subscription service for people who don't like jazz enough to own Kind of Blue.

will probably buy that if they're selling it in WH Smiths tbh but it doesn't strike me as v sustainable in the longterm

popular jazz record "Kind of Blue", yours for £4.99, plus free magazine.

Seems like a good deal really!

Well, I don't for a kickoff.

Mark G, Friday, 22 January 2016 12:46 (eight years ago) link

yeah I've got a very crappy copy I picked up 2nd hand, a good opportunity to upgrade

The Male Gaz Coombes (Neil S), Friday, 22 January 2016 12:47 (eight years ago) link

I bought this yesterday and am listening to it for the first time now. It sounds like a pretty good pressing to me, though I've only got the CD version to compare it to. I can't see myself spending £14.99 a copy on the rest of the series, though. The general point of these types of things is that you need to buy all of them to make up a complete set, but with LPs, jazz or otherwise, I guess people will just pick the ones they really want, especially at £15 a pop.

eifion, Saturday, 23 January 2016 17:41 (eight years ago) link

How's the magazine?

schlep and back trio (anagram), Saturday, 23 January 2016 17:45 (eight years ago) link

there kind of isn't one...? you get a slim booklet giving a wiki-level precis of the recording of the album, plus a big fold out poster. bit weird having it the magazine racks all told

Skaciety (pronounced the way you'd pronounce society) (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 23 January 2016 17:53 (eight years ago) link

the website says that the next two issues are going to be Blue Train and Lady in Satin. also that "70 issues are currently planned for this series" which seems a little optimistic maybe

soref, Saturday, 23 January 2016 17:54 (eight years ago) link

it's fortnightly as well, so anyone buying every issue would be spending nearly £30 a month.

the list in the 5th post below is apparently the collection that these records are being selected from, the list goes up to 80 rather than 70 so I guess some are going to be skipped over, so no Keith Jarrett

I expel a minor traveler's flatulence (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 23 January 2016 18:53 (eight years ago) link

there's an advert in the guardian today for this. shows the first 6 of that list minus the jarrett. and a website link:

I expel a minor traveler's flatulence (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 23 January 2016 19:36 (eight years ago) link

It can't be a money making endeavor at £5 a throw.

Austin, Saturday, 23 January 2016 19:45 (eight years ago) link

That's the model for all of those types of mags. First fix is free cheap.

emil.y, Saturday, 23 January 2016 19:50 (eight years ago) link

yeah, I guess £10 makes more sense. but £15 for jazz reissues seems steep. and the scheme is scammy.

I expel a minor traveler's flatulence (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 23 January 2016 19:54 (eight years ago) link

looking these up, I guess I'm wrong though and £15 or more is the going rate for many of these

I expel a minor traveler's flatulence (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 23 January 2016 19:58 (eight years ago) link

what you're buying there isn't the record, it's the cred and the lifestyle.

ulysses, Saturday, 23 January 2016 20:52 (eight years ago) link

"Vinyl is Back, Jazz is Back!" says our demographics which is how we got the venture capital for this enterprise.

ulysses, Saturday, 23 January 2016 20:53 (eight years ago) link

But hey, maybe somebody will hear Kind of Blue for the first time this way and it'll change their life? Just seems unlikely.

ulysses, Saturday, 23 January 2016 20:54 (eight years ago) link

Upgrade to our premium subscription and you will receive these 2 high quality solid wood storage boxes to house your new vinyl collection.

schlep and back trio (anagram), Saturday, 23 January 2016 21:18 (eight years ago) link

Yes, but it also says the boxes come with the tenth / final delivery, and as the deliveries have 2 albums each time, that's 20 albums in total.

It did mention some 'special editions', so I guess there'll be a christmas jazz album maybe.

Mark G, Saturday, 23 January 2016 21:23 (eight years ago) link

bought a copy of that thing today, somehow i'd lost my old kind of blue along the way, so i was pretty happy to pick one up. had to hunt around a bit for it - thought it would be hiding somewhere behind the wall of bowie tribute magazines, but in the third whsmiths i tried it was actually in the weirdo section along with occult mysteries of the third reich part one and those magazines that come with a collectible model of a 1930s bread van glued to the front. now i'm spending a very clichéd wet sunday afternoon drinking black coffee and listening to miles mantronix and the pointer sisters

seb mooczag (NickB), Sunday, 24 January 2016 15:00 (eight years ago) link

Be funny if this run of Kind of Blues were mis-pressed w/Mantronix on one side and the Pointer Sisters on the other.

"Damn the Taquitos" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 24 January 2016 15:32 (eight years ago) link

Totally read this as 'Steve Reich' and thought there was a corresponding minimalism vinyl/mag series.

It was our custodian's final day on Friday, so I did something I said I'd never do: chipped in with two other guys for a $30 reissued Who Sells Out. Is that a shady scam? For someone who's mentally still living in a 1983 vinyl universe, yes.

clemenza, Sunday, 24 January 2016 15:37 (eight years ago) link

And considering original US pressings can be found for $30 or less in decent shape, yes.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 24 January 2016 15:56 (eight years ago) link

I inherited a copy from my parents' discard pile in the early '70s, scratched that one up, bought a used copy in very good shape for $7 or $8 around 1980. The reissue did include a "psychedelic poster." I hope it's very, very large. (Excuse the grammatical glitch in the previous post.)

Yeah, the first UK pressing came with this poster (and you're unlikely to find that pressing, with or without the poster, in decent shape under 3 figures):

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 24 January 2016 16:44 (eight years ago) link

For years, the only vinyl Sell Out I had was the 70s twofer; finally found a good US copy (with hype sticker!) for $12 last year.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 24 January 2016 16:45 (eight years ago) link

There was some import press version of Sell Out making the rounds a few years ago that had appended BONUS TRACKS (iirc worked into/around the track list because it was still 1 LP).

"Damn the Taquitos" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 24 January 2016 17:04 (eight years ago) link

Don't know that one, I don't see it on Discogs.

Mark G, Sunday, 24 January 2016 17:21 (eight years ago) link

Not sure of the label; it was somebody Universal was licensing to--one of the other titles they had was Disraeli Gears (w/"Lawdy Mama" added on at the end). Retailed for $30+.

oh that needs to happen, i would buy a shit ton of that! it's kinda sad that there are so few genres that would ever be treated this way. imagine how great a classic hip hop series would be! could see a punk one working but i'm sure it would be sex pistols, the clash, the jam, more clash, more jam, green day, um...
