I was sitting in a pub in Paisley one night when a bloke was setting up the karaoke - we were just going to finish our pints and leave and he started singing that version of American Pie and I was roffling so much I couldn't actually stand up even if I'd wanted to leave.

Can somebody pick a pub for me on 27th? I would, but after fighting with my mother last night about Glasgow I've lost the will to live.

Her: "There's no such place in Glasgow as Hillhead, you're making it up to send me to the wrong place."
Me: "Aye there is. OK, try finding Charing Cross first."
Her: "There's no Charing Cross either. You're just having me on."
Me: "How about Kelvingrove?"
Her: Can't see that either. This has got all the areas of Glasgow on it, I can see Partick."
Me: "Right, that's a good start. So, move into town a bit - what does it say?"
Her: "Glasgow. It just says Glasgow."
Me: "What exactly are you looking at?"
Her: "A map of Glasgow."
Me: "Are you sure?"
Her: "Yes, an ordnance survey one."

1:250,000 was the scale. No wonder she couldn't find anything.

Universal is good for me. Station Bar less so (location not as great for escaping up Bath Street). In fact, Universal strikes me as the best suggestion we are going to get.

Ally C might be coming too, I was putting the squeeze on a bit last night, though I'm not sure I was successful.

(cozen, the bastille is miles away! - well a few hundred yards out of the area of maximum convenience)

xpost - or the "fantastic" Yates, scene of last night's Xmas party night out from hell (which probably progressed to Jumping Jaks but I escaped before getting the chance to find out)

Campus is good in the middle of the afternoon when drinks are £1 and you can play pool and air hockey. However, when other people start arriving, not so good.

universal does nice(ish) food as well. and one of the barmen is a big OMD fan. so hurrah.

it can get busy at lunchtime but they let you call ahead and reserve a table for lunch, even if it is of the liquid variety.

I am not spoken for at all over New Year, so plan away and I will be there. Cheers for lunchtime booze, Aldo, Grimly and (belatedly as I was leaving) Cozen. Panto was excellent. As was booze. As, unbelievably, was the Daily Record. I wish I'd had the mince and tatties though. Red or brown, Aldo?

I have now drunk a gallon(ish) of shiraz and several large irish-cointreau-coffees, and need to get back into glasgow tomorrow to deliver the parents to buchanan street. Anyone wishing booze, please phone. No work until january 4th!

It was great. Pantos are brilliant! My dad (nearly 74) has never been to one in his life, and loved it. Crap jokes, ponies, sweeties, singalongs, audience participation, ridiculous costumes, all present and correct.
