there's an ad for a new phone app for your refrigerator that shows you what is inside. there are a few commercials for it but one involved an insufferable couple; he is at a grocery store, she is literally standing in front of the refrigerator, and he asks her if they are out of eggs. she can't turn around because she is scooping out a watermelon (to which he says "I know, you're an artist!"). both these people would lose their heads if they weren't attached at the neck.

real people not actors my ass

oh, they are real people all right, carefully screened and auditioned, then handed their lines and allowed as many takes as were required to get the shots the director wanted. but they don't belong to the Screen Actors Guild and weren't paid at scale. hence, not actors.

There were two of these threads, a US one and a UK one. Seems to be mixed together now. Apologies if this doesn't make sense.

US: i really don't like the subway commercials where people use the names of subway sandwiches as metonymy for the specific weekdays they are the "subs of", and the beaming new father says his daughter was "born on chicken teriyaki day". have more than once seen this scheduled back-to-back w the "food you want to fork" commercial about wanting to fuck food and the world thus sketched is an unhealthy one.

yes.

florence foster wallace (difficult listening hour), Thursday, 6 October 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link

Yeah both those and the Subway ads are terrible.

"raw buttin' these toilet seats" (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 6 October 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link

When I was in America recently I saw the same ad about a hundred times where a guy is at a hipster fondue party but he doesn't want any of their fancy-pants food because he's bought a fucking Taco Bell burrito with him. You know, like you would if you were going to a party where you knew there was going to be food. And he's so smug about it, it makes me annoyed on behalf of the snobby hipster characters the ad is trying to show up.

the genre of advert where someone does something banal and it's presented in an ironically heroic way is pretty much always terrible, but there's something particularly insulting about the laziness/lack of inspiration on display here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GHLTDIOmog

the money supermarket ads have obviously popularised it, but I feel like there was an earlier specific ad that started this bad trend, I can't remember what it was, though.

soref, Sunday, 23 October 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

I suppose you don't have the Bud Light Real Men of Genius/Real American Heroes ads over there--an entire campaign in the "banal things treated as heroic" genre

Dan I., Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:31 (seven years ago) link

Which, holy shit now that I've googled them, started in 1998 and has had over 200 installments

Dan I., Sunday, 23 October 2016 20:33 (seven years ago) link

This is loathsome enough from the start, but then "our technology has to hang tough with us" pushes it right over the edge.

Yeah, so you both know where you can shove your laptop and your long battery life and your 44 different countries across all seven continents and your we wanted to help more people overcome their fears and see the world, don't you?

Bloody Snail, Monday, 24 October 2016 00:02 (seven years ago) link

The other one in that series where the guy that isn't Will-I-Am says "When I was young, I promised myself that I would never throw up" I was all "What has that got to do with the laptop or the films you do?"

(There is another, a set designer with an unlikely name, that one is not too bad)

Mark G, Monday, 24 October 2016 00:21 (seven years ago) link

Beowulf Borritt! who is the son of this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabor_Boritt

disappointingly, his other sons have fairly boring names:

Together they have raised three sons: Beowulf Boritt is a set designer in New York City, Jake Boritt is a filmmaker who lives in Harlem, and Daniel Boritt is a biologist specializing in birds who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I don't think I've seen the one where a guy that isn't Will-I-Am talks about throwing up, are you sure that exists?

The Nationwide advert with the young poet guy annoys me intensely and because of one specific thing to do with the poem itself; he does a bit early on where he lambasts "dads dad dance to dad music centuries since it made it in the charts" but then boasts later about him and his mates coming home drunk "singing to Britpop" because that's of their time and is their thing.

The guy's about 20. His dad will be from the Britpop era, that music from 20 years ago.

these contradictions resolve themselves if you remember that the guy is a cunt doing a cunt poem for cunts

Ice T at a lemonade stand

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 24 October 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link

if you want to know more about the guy from the Nationwide ad, the has an impressively comprehensive wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skint_%26_Demoralised

Skint & Demoralised began when Wakefield teenager Matt Abbott started doing stand-up performance poetry in late 2006. With comical themes such as tales from Seaside towns[1] and tragic nights-out,[2] he was often a hit with a pleasantly surprised audience.[3]

He's not 20 years old then.

wait, do you mean the ad with these two? I'm pretty sure he says he promised himself that he would never grow up, not throw up

Will-i-isn't is actually the bloke who did Book Of Life

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Gutierrez_(animator)

and it is 'grow up' but in a thick mexican accent.
