I honestly think that's one of the most beautiful videogame pieces I've seen. That's art right there. Love how these people use speedrunning and SM64 specifically as a canvas to create wholly unique new videogames.

its subtle brume (DJP), Monday, 25 January 2016 22:11 (eight years ago) link

if you think about it, war is a lot like solitaire

you have to "play the cards that are dealt to you", for example
sometimes, the "hand that you are dealt" is just impossible to overcome, one could say
kings and queens often play a role, as well as renegade "jacks" and "jokers"
both are covered extensively in newspapers
the royal figures often look you in the eye and offer advice that only you can hear
suits are very important
courage is also very important
along with maintaining "a steady hand"

but they are also different in many ways. for example, wars often involve death

Karl Malone, Monday, 25 January 2016 22:12 (eight years ago) link

thoroughly annoyed that the coverage all seems to be of the "ancient ex-big shot makes pretty good video game!" stripe instead of "if you give this warmongering torturer a dime of your money you're an ignorant dick"

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Monday, 25 January 2016 22:16 (eight years ago) link

Yeah but you can download it for free and make fun of it

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 25 January 2016 22:17 (eight years ago) link

I'd be concerned that my DL would add to the advertising rates or something. I just really fucking hate the guy, is all.

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Monday, 25 January 2016 22:21 (eight years ago) link

I'm all for making jokes about it but I'll be damned if I download it

its subtle brume (DJP), Monday, 25 January 2016 22:24 (eight years ago) link

i've spent a long time waiting for a former vice-president to give his imprimatur to a video game version of an obscure version of a popular card game, so this is right up my alley

Joe Biden's Asshole!

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Monday, 25 January 2016 22:34 (eight years ago) link

i don't think rumsfeld was ever a VP. the game was based on something Churchill invented, right? it's not so crazy (war criminals designing strategy games) and supposedly Diplomacy was JFK + Henry Kissinger's favorite game.

Mordy, Monday, 25 January 2016 22:34 (eight years ago) link

when i first saw it i thought i'd bump this thread with it - thread for discussing the link between militarization & video games - but i see you all got there first

xp to tom - the game is ad free and he gets nothing from you checking it out, don't sweat it too much

ulysses, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 00:16 (eight years ago) link

I really could give a shit less. The fact that every outlet is covering this in the same whitewashed tone as the WSJ piece, as if the motherfucker is just some funny old codger making videogames with his dictaphone, how cute, is nauseating. I'm sure 4,491 American families are just tickled. The lying piece of shit should be getting tarred and feathered but instead we just can't get over how innovative this card game is that he learned while he was a diplomat in the 1970s!

Oh wait Mordy's right anybody who gets their knickers in a twist about war criminals making games is a naif because JFK supposedly enjoyed the board game Diplomacy.

BTW I dunno what the work ethic was like for politicians in the late fifties but if dude had time to play Diplomacy then I guess all those stories about his way with the ladies really are just made up

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 01:18 (eight years ago) link

I looked at some other SM64 A-press videos and according to commenters the current minimum for the whole game is 37 A-presses, 18 of which are on Tic-Toc Clock. I'm glad someone out there is doing this vital research.

jmm, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 01:20 (eight years ago) link

of all the horrible shit rumsfeld is knee deep in, slumming it with video games is the least objectionable imo but vent your spleen. i'm just saying if you want to see what the thing is you don't have to support him in any way to do so.

ulysses, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 01:46 (eight years ago) link

one of the two or three times i played call of duty modern warfare i was treated to a pensive donald rumsfeld quote on a post-death loading screen: this ship has not only sailed but disappeared over the horizon
