This has that diaphanous hologramic quality of Swain-Jolley produced stuff like Imagination and early Bananarama.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 January 2016 11:49 (eight years ago) link

OH MY GOD, the climax of "oh please"

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2016 11:54 (eight years ago) link

overwhelming tbh

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2016 11:55 (eight years ago) link

great record

nxd, Thursday, 28 January 2016 11:59 (eight years ago) link

the most beautiful music ever made

Tim F, Thursday, 28 January 2016 12:12 (eight years ago) link

I knew that hearing so many of their songs together at the same time would be overwhelming but maybe not this overwhelming?

My housemate arrived home as I was doing the dishes to "Supernatural" and without even saying hello to me exclaimed "what is THIS?"

art baengels (monotony), Thursday, 28 January 2016 12:19 (eight years ago) link

Love Song becomes this unbelievable thing without you noticing

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Thursday, 28 January 2016 14:19 (eight years ago) link

im waiting on two things itt, once all the flowers have been laid at their feet: 1) notorious contrarian crank al shipley, and 2) whether or not ppl think they surpassed their last release

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:00 (eight years ago) link

their last release?

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:03 (eight years ago) link

derp their debut

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:08 (eight years ago) link

i'm not the expert here pal but doesn't their debut show up here in its entirety, in lush extended-mix form, segueing into the other songs? if that isn't surpassed idk what is

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:09 (eight years ago) link

^^^^ yeah this is why i was confused

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:10 (eight years ago) link

no im saying 'derp their debut' as in, derp this is their debut, i was thinking the old singles had been compiled somewhere but apparently not

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:10 (eight years ago) link

ahhhh

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:11 (eight years ago) link

i assumed there was more to the catalog i wasnt familiar w/ but apparently i knew their shit better than i thought :(

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:11 (eight years ago) link

you're taking home the gold

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:13 (eight years ago) link

This notional clusterfuck that doesn't even exist is a waste of good pedantry, guys.

Matt DC, Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:14 (eight years ago) link

Kind of annoyed I can't listen to this until tomorrow at the earliest.

Matt DC, Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:15 (eight years ago) link

i still want to know what al thinks lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:18 (eight years ago) link

I succumbed and right now I'm listening this on the phone despite the crappy sound, and so far it sounds like Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt" stretched through a wormhole, which is pretty much the best thing I can think of.

Tuomas, Thursday, 28 January 2016 15:55 (eight years ago) link

This album is incredible. Everything about it is perfect without anything ever feeling forced. Like others have already said, that climax/solo in Oh, Please is everything, very Prince like.

Hey is still my highlight. It feels so cruel that it's only six minutes long, I want to be in that moment forever.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 28 January 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

okay, queuing up; you guys losing your shit here has me worried/hopeful/terrified/excited

ulysses, Thursday, 28 January 2016 16:04 (eight years ago) link

not to set the bar too high, but its awesome

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 16:08 (eight years ago) link

omg at "Native Land" this is amazing

conditional random jepsen (seandalai), Thursday, 28 January 2016 16:25 (eight years ago) link

this is really great so far

puts me in the zone of "Right Here" by SWV but way more layered and complex

Amira, Queen of Creativity (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 28 January 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link

i get kind of a 80s jam & lewis' jagged edges sanded smooth via 'i want you'

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 21:13 (eight years ago) link

R&B not my thing at all but this is amazingly beautiful music

the late great, Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:14 (eight years ago) link

wasnt there another thread w/ King discussion at one point? Maybe rev's alt-R&B thread?

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:15 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I think that's where I first posted about them.

The Reverend, Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:21 (eight years ago) link

rev, what's the link there? Not sure i have that bookmarked.

ulysses, Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:22 (eight years ago) link

wow, this really can't be background music on the first listen huh.

ulysses, Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:22 (eight years ago) link

should i go to a free KING show tonight and get a copy of the album a week early?

nomar, Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:22 (eight years ago) link

Nah.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:23 (eight years ago) link

lol

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:24 (eight years ago) link

Oh, I guess Andy K was the first to post about them here. I picked them up via Erykah Badu's twitter.

itt: kinda out there, maybe kinda experimental, maybe kinda pretentious modern r&b

The Reverend, Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:26 (eight years ago) link

going to their record release show next friday, see y'all there

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:26 (eight years ago) link

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:34 (eight years ago) link

into track 3 and thinking how many of those pre-programmed casio drum patterns they used. i think i used that tropical drum pattern back in the 90s once too!

bicyclescope (mattresslessness), Thursday, 28 January 2016 22:44 (eight years ago) link

this whole album is lushly beautiful but "Native Land" is fucking stunning

rob, Friday, 29 January 2016 01:13 (eight years ago) link

So they're killing it at an in-store in Amoeba Hollywood right now. Just check this clip!

What's in your bag, KING?

Andy K, Friday, 29 January 2016 02:40 (eight years ago) link

It feels weird that we've reached a point in time when casio drum patterns are a nostalgic sound.

The Reverend, Friday, 29 January 2016 03:52 (eight years ago) link

i don't deserve to listen to this album; it's too pure, too luscious, too immaculate for my scummy dirtbag soul
