haha had no idea my trip to amoeba would be so *controversial! i had a saturday evening to kill and jetlag bad enough that i would have been terrible company for anyone i met up with, but i really wanted to go to a record shop, and i thought it would only take me 60 minutes tbh. i used to travel to LA a lot but I haven't been there for a couple of years now so actually it was kind of lovely to walk up the strip and revisit a lot of old haunts. the thing is i thought that as soon as you get to In'n'Out burger Amoeba's just a block or so along, but it's further and i was p fed up of walking by that point. the thing about walking in la is its only ever english people and homeless people who do it. i actually really enjoyed the walk overall, though i must admit i took a cab back as it was dark and i was tired. the next day the press agent and i walked another 90 minutes to the capitol building for the interview i had to do, and that was more fun because at least i had someone to talk with for the duration.

i picked up a nice copy of the third minnie riperton lp for $6, the second pointer sisters for $2, a killer mingus comp with all of black saint on it for $10, skies of america for $15 and a copy of the arthur russell comp with wild combination for my other half, so it was a successful trip imo. then i had a decent pizza from prova and fell asleep in my hotel room about 9pm.

and yeah if i was in nyc i would be totally fine with a four hour walk, that is a city made for wandering.

SCROTUS (stevie), Sunday, 21 February 2016 13:17 (eight years ago) link

Walking 90 minutes every day should be mandatory.

^this.

the walk there would be no problem, i would only be worried about a 90 minute walk home while carrying records though i guess just make sure you bring an umbrella if it looks like rain

I'd be more worried about having 90 minutes to dwell on my amoeba purchases/non-purchases. Walk there sounds excellent, though.

I cabbed it back but still had time to regret not picking up the acetate of an early Laff Records Richard Pryor LP

I for one applaud stevie's vinyl pedestrianism.

François Pitchforkian (NickB), Monday, 22 February 2016 07:26 (eight years ago) link

I walked a couple of times from Hammersmith to Rough Trade on Brick Lane and it took a couple of hours, and those were amazing, eye-opening afternoons that changed the way I viewed the city. So props Stevie

Your Ribs are My Ladder, Monday, 22 February 2016 07:40 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I did a similar walk to Rough Trade in Notting Hill, left with a copy of Fiery Jack, the fall. Nowhere else seemed to have it.

Mark G, Monday, 22 February 2016 07:43 (eight years ago) link

if my only contribution to ilx is to promote walking as a pastime then all these years will not have been in vain

you can get the bus back once you've got the records if they're too many to carry. lots of buses right across the road. plus Uber (cabs in LA are useless ime).

glandular lansbury (sic), Monday, 22 February 2016 12:35 (eight years ago) link

uber was startlingly cheap in LA compared to NYC.

i had a good experience at vacation vinyl on sunset. great selection of weird noise and metal, the dude was super super friendly to everyone.

adam, Monday, 22 February 2016 12:51 (eight years ago) link

i ubered. was considering a bus, which i'd used before, but was knackered and map-blind enough that i couldn't figure out what bus to catch. ideally wanted to catch a cab but there were none cruising the strip.

SCROTUS (stevie), Monday, 22 February 2016 13:07 (eight years ago) link

This has officially become the most boring thread in ILX history

idk surely devolving into friendly chatter is preferable to pointless bickering?

when I lived in LA I walked to amoeba from UCLA and then back again

so have we confirmed that walking 90 minutes is a shady scam to take advantage of earnest new vinyl collectors?

shandemonium padawan (Doctor Casino), Monday, 22 February 2016 18:15 (eight years ago) link

I've done quite a few long walks along the Regent's Canal which were essentially winding detours to Honest Jon's and the general grubby wonder of Ladbroke Grove.

Poacher (Chinaski), Monday, 22 February 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link

when i was a kid i would ride my bike pretty far to get to particular santa monica record stores. great ride, though -- the Strand!

tylerw, Monday, 22 February 2016 18:37 (eight years ago) link

i walked for miles and miles in philly for records. i didn't like taking buses. it was really the only exercise i got.

scott seward, Monday, 22 February 2016 18:57 (eight years ago) link

i had a really good bag at the time. could fit 30 records no problem.

scott seward, Monday, 22 February 2016 18:57 (eight years ago) link

yeah there were times when i bought too many things and riding home was less fun

cannot wait until oculus rift allows us to take 90 minute walks to this thread

Toof Seteltha (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 22 February 2016 19:10 (eight years ago) link

one time when i was 15 i walked a couple miles to my buddy's house to get like $15 he owed me and then walked a couple more miles back to the record store to purchase hatful of hollow and then walked maybe another mile back to my house to listen to it. was it 90 minutes? more? who knows!

adam, Monday, 22 February 2016 19:17 (eight years ago) link

How earnest were you on a scale of 1 - 10

Evan, Monday, 22 February 2016 19:24 (eight years ago) link

maybe 6 but i was pretty young so let's say 7.5

adam, Monday, 22 February 2016 19:25 (eight years ago) link

did you sing "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" to your buddy when you got to his house

tylerw, Monday, 22 February 2016 19:26 (eight years ago) link

When I lived in Reno I would walk about ten miles round trip to the record/book stores downtown at least once a week. I loved it because it either gave me a chance to listen to music on headphones or spend time with my girlfriend at the time.

Maybe VNYL can revise their business plan and create an app that will tell you how far a walk you are from the closest thrift shops from anywhere in the world

I thought insound was out of business but I'm still getting emails from them. They end up in my spam. It's embarrassing, they are desperately trying to sell off just a small handful of vinyl LPs. It's not a scam I guess, just slim pickings.

nomar, Friday, 26 February 2016 20:41 (eight years ago) link

Sundazed has been describing their stuff as 'High Definition' for awhile now. But I guess they're not offering a 'True HD' experience.

There is a small but vocal cabal among the vinyl enthusiast community who seek to control the language of our hobby via bullying and ridiculing those who use the term "vinyls" to describe 2 or more units of vinyl recorded media. In an effort to promote inclusiveness, we would like to have the term "vinyls" enshrined as the official plural term for vinyl recorded media. This will also serve the essential purpose of annoying people who would rather ridicule a complete stranger than say something encouraging to a fellow "vinyls" collector, especially those who may be just getting started in the hobby.

lol amazing.

they want to fight bullying and ridiculing

they want to promote inclusiveness

and yet the essential purpose is to annoy specific people

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 15:52 (eight years ago) link

just got an email about this: http://keepersrecordclub.com/ -- maybe not scammy but i still don't really get these things

Introducing Keepers Vinyl Record Club:

A monthly subscription record club for record enthusiasts where musicians act as curator, selecting a record they love and writing their own liner notes on the album's personal impact. A copy of the record and liners are sent to each subscriber, creating a shared experience between the musician and listener through the enjoyment of a record.

something seems kind of .... wrong .... about getting a FUGAZI record of all things from a record-of-the-month club. the first Fugazi i bought was a $10 CD and i was thrilled it was that cheap only to later discover it was because of their awesome DIYness which is one of the amazing things about that band.

this club is $30 per month.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 16:11 (eight years ago) link

haha yeah ... but you get that guy's liner notes?
