on my last project, sometimes I'd find a potential defect, and not being a tech person, would want to run it by the tech team to determine if it was actually a defect, or if I was doing something wrong.

they got mad and said I needed to just start a defect task, that they had *too many emails to read* - couldn't even get to the ones clearly marked as needing attention. so I asked if they really wanted me to send a defect even though I wasn't *sure* it was a defect or my own mistake or if anybody had already submitted one (cos they wouldn't give me a list) and even though a defect took three times as long as an email to write only to wind up being cancelled if it wasn't needed.

they said "yes".

Found out today that the reason one of the communal bins was missing earlier this week when I went to chuck things out was somebody had set it alight last weekend. It's not 100% certain who at the moment but people are blaming local youth who were seen in the vicinity.
Wishing the letting agency would dos omething about those bins anyway since the housing they're in is in a constant state of foulness.
I'm just hoping that when this block gets sold the new owner will be able to do something. Probably shouldn't be holding my breath though.
& in a rented space over here it's the landlord that has the say on bin arrangements apparently. Or at least that's what i was being told when the bin arrangements were changed a couple of years back.

& I think they moved onto these disastrous communal bins because a fire marshall had told the letting agent relevant to this block that it was safer than having th eindividual bins at the bottom of the stairs that had worked ok for the first 6 or 7 years I was here.

Since the rise of Trump, I've been getting IA about people asserting incorrect facts with confidence.
Makes me notice how often, when corrected, people (a) double-down (b) assert some weird personal experience as evidence of their correctness and then (c) when finally proven wrong attack the other person as lame for knowing the correct answer.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 14 March 2016 19:14 (eight years ago) link

That's definitely a tendency that predates the ascendancy of Trump. It's part of the reason why I basically never discuss anything with anyone ever.

i send them the converted files
and then they ask me questions about what i sent them "was x included?" "are there any other y files"?

hey guess what the contents are *still* a total fuckin mystery to me, maybe ask whoever sent you the files in the first place? jfc

Pedestrians coming from the other way who walk around the grate in the sidewalk and play chicken with me for ten feet.

Just walk around the grate. There's a reason why it's called a grate and not "a hole in the ground."

When I get on a train and there's only one empty seat, but the guy in seat next to it is using it for his briefcase. I say, "Excuse me" and he just stares blankly for an awkwardly long time, as if hoping that I will just move along.

The second part of this is usually a sigh-punctuated, slow-motion moving of the brief case and then a lot of pushing of elbows and legs into my seat space for the rest of the trip.

Same thing, different dude, every day.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Tuesday, 22 March 2016 16:57 (eight years ago) link

You should engage these fellows in sprightly conversation for the duration of your ride. Or until they just decide to move.

Someone pulled this shit on a Megabus once. As in a multi-hour thing where I'd bought a ticket for an actual seat. It took everything I had to not play my tiny violin as the dude huffingly Paul Rudd-ed his stuff off the adjacent seat.

Preschools making ultra-specific requests for shit you have to bring in/send in. (1) Preschoolers cannot be relied on to communicate anything, and the fact that you stuffed a folded piece of paper into my daughter's backpack in between a change of clothes, her crumpled drawings, and some snacks does not mean I will see it. (2) We have jobs and other things to do with our lives, and not every corner store and supermarket in New York carries individually-wrapped, nut-free, kosher cookie snack packages.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 25 March 2016 04:35 (eight years ago) link

also it's so disingenuous -- "lean in" is bad enough as it is, but his wife really does not need him to "lean in" because they have infinite money.

Maybe it's more of a commentary on how shitty meetings are. Like even taking care of a baby is better than going to a meeting. Low bar.

people having long screaming fights in public with their S.O. ... on their phones.

There was a college-age girl doing this in Park Slope, squatting on the sidewalk, the other night, *across the street* from where i was using the ATM. I could hear every word. I gave her a broad smile and yelled "You don't have to yell when you have a phone, asshole!" Made my evening.

i hate the fairly recent thing in social media where an image is cut down to fit the template so you click it expecting a full-size version to open up as an overlay or whatever you call it, and it does open up as that but it's... smaller ???? because they cram the whole picture into the window rather than letting you scroll

especially in twitter, where they also need to fit in the tweet itself so the picture is just tiny

How unrandom the 'shuffle' function is on just about any music player application. I know true randomness is very difficult to achieve but every time I to listen to my catalog on shuffle it's 3 songs off the same album in the first twenty songs, out of thousands of albums!?

I briefly ran a perforation machine at a paper factory after high school, so I get this way about perforations in general that don't work the way they're supposed to. And I think you're right that this didn't used to happen in the good old days. But I can confirm that, while a properly-calibrated perforation doesn't happen on its own, it ain't that effing hard to pull off if you have, like, any motivation whatsoever.

Worst with the tear here shit is where its a glued-down foil lid with a little tab, and you pull at the "tear here" tab and it just comes off.

Interesting. No, wait, the other thing: tedious. (Trayce), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 02:31 (eight years ago) link

I installed a VPN adblocker in iOS and that solved a fair bit of that. Not all, but much of it. The only drawback is the VPN blocks all apps not just safari/chrome, so it makes siri not work, among other things. I can live with that tho.
