(Basically it's not news that elementary school kids are fun but need more guidance, and high schoolers are independent and interesting, but middle school kids are a crazy mess somewhere in the middle.)

I think a lot depends on having a fun/interesting troop leader. And having scouts that don't go on about factory records all day.

Do you guys suppose the scouts went middle-of-the-road progressive as a DIRECT RESULT of selling cookies? i.e. wanting to avoid the sort of ugliness when suzy tries to push the thin mints onto a feminist neighbor or some such.

maybe boy scouts selling boy scout jerky or something would have a similar moderating effect.
