Ha, I had assumed that some of these were meant as parody on the original thread.

I'm not embarrassed at all. When I love something this much I guess cheese gushes out of my pores. Deal with it. Totally voted for my own overpraise, too.

Most embarrassing thing about being a "professional" "music" "critic", part 8,749:

Having lived inside the self-perpetuated hype cycle for so long that they have lost the ability to tell Hype from sheer joy.

In fact, Whiney, at your point in this game, I think you have lost the ability to even recognise, let alone experience actual joy - through music or anything else - that you feel the need to exterminate it on sight in others.

I'm not the slightest bit embarrassed for myself, but I feel painfully embarrassed for you. Please give up. I think ILX, and indeed the world, would be better for it.

I already elected not to click on any of the sneery blowhard's links in future on account him thinking there is still comedic currency in the word "retard", but fuck him for this worthless shitiness as well.

i'm also astonished (in a good way) that so many people seem to be into it, i had literally never heard the name before the ilm poll and am yet to see the name outside of ilm

for the record: while this curmudgeonly WHOGIVESASHIT.jpeg is certainly a facet of whiney's online persona, I can tell you from numerous experiences seeing him out at concerts over the years that he very rarely experiences good live music with anything less than fervent ecstacy

ulysses, Wednesday, 6 April 2016 14:34 (eight years ago) link

whiney's reviews are more "the music is so badass because blah blah" and less about "the music makes me feeeel" imo.

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 April 2016 14:36 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I don't think whiney doesn't recognize joy, I think he's just a bit overly concerned with cool-policing. Like that guy in school who worried too much about whether someone he associated with was a poser or a dork, and made sure to vocally disassociate himself with any detection of mindless trend following or dorky behavior that embarrassed him given other cools might be watching and judging.

I figured this thread wouldn't be much more than a snarkfest but then I read through and I thought: this is such a gift.

Whiney, LYLAS, but based solely on threads like this, it's hard for me to imagine that you aren't consumed with the self-conscious need to avoid walking down the street in a fashion that might be mistaken as the pedestrian equivalent of Overly-Earnest Bacon N' Moustaches Brony the Vampire Slayerism.

ulysses, Thursday, 7 April 2016 01:23 (eight years ago) link

I am deeply fucking tired of this bullshit.

If Whiney IS actually able to express some enjoyment of music he deems worthwhile, while STILL mocking others for taking joy from music, that makes it better, not worse.

I'm done with guys like this. Bullies like this are a cancer on music fandom. Mock, mock, mock. The pathetic and blatant attempts to SHAME people for:
-not liking the right music
-liking music in the ~wrong way~
-being the ~wrong sort of person~ to have a right to publicly enjoy music, fullstop

I've been dealing with this kind of crap my entire life. Guys who try to enforce their views on what music appreciation should be, what should be appreciated, and how. And it always boils down to the same fucking message: You are WRONG for liking female-shaped music. You are WRONG for expressing that enjoyment in female-shaped ways. You are wrong for being female-shaped in public. Plus an added extra bonus sneer and shaming for being autistic, and expressing appreciation for too effusive and non-cool a manner. Over half the posts in his little "poll" are my posts. That's not an accident. It's directed at who has the right to express fandom, and who has the right to do it in what manner. And I'm tired of this kind of bullshit, and the message behind it, and I will not just shut up and put up with it and you guys who ride for him going "oh but he doesn't mean it that way" - actually yes, he does. Yes, I am angry, and I have the right to feel angry at the way this cancer of a human being is acting.

I am not embarrassed, and I will not be shamed for liking the music I like, and expressing that love in the way that feels right for me. I will not be shamed for being girl-shaped, and I will not be shamed for being autisticly girl-shaped. It's Whiney who should be embarrassed, and who deserves to be shamed publicly for being a bully, for being a joy-policing wanker, and for being the guy who seemingly thinks that the paragon of cool or ~badass~ or whatever is to pick on the autistic chick for ~LIKING MUSIC IN WRONG WAY~.

You're a bully and a cancer, Whiney, and you're too ignorant to even know to be ashamed of it.

Sehr Kornisch (Branwell with an N), Thursday, 7 April 2016 07:43 (eight years ago) link

i understand opposition to hyperbole. it's got that kind of clickbaity aura to it. and you can say "people shouldn't hold themselves and others to high writerly standards on message board posts", but i disagree; i don't want every internet message board to be a charnel pit.

but even though i can resist maybe 95% of clickbait headlines (the one i can't resist will SHOCK you!), i am a sucker for well-written hyperbole, anything that expresses the notion that this music inspires a passionate response in human beings. that's what got me with king, who i wouldn't have ordinarily listened to because they're a little outside of my genre wheelhouse. the stuff people have said on ilx about king? a little over the top, honestly. but they're a good band, and their album is a good album. in fact right now i'm in an ongoing battle with a co-worker to get them to listen to king. he avoids them because they look like destiny's child on their cover art. to which my response is "destiny's child are awesome and you're a racist", but it's a hard sell.

we're all hard sells these days. there are bands, many of them, i refuse to listen to simply because i don't like their name. law of averages is that most of them are terrible, but if, say, "joanna gruesome" is actually a good band, i'll never know, and since all the good names are taken- hell, most of the bad names are taken- it's not exactly fair judgment.

technology has changed the role of music writing. if the goal was ever to give the reader an approximate understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the work in question, it's not now. the primary goal is to just get people to listen to something so that they can make their own decision.

Branwell, don't know if this helps but I didn't glean anything girl-shaped or autistic about your username or posts, I just thought it was funny that everyone went DiCrescenzo over a synth album that's been out a week.

People should really ask Whiney's permission before posting Spotify playlists enthusiastic praise for new music.

My Whole Existence Is Flan (Old Lunch), Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:18 (eight years ago) link

luckily my praise on the initial thread was mild enough to avoid becoming a poll option. but if the ultimate purpose of endlessly talking about music on the internet for 15 fucking years is to encourage habits of self-interrogation that help us understand that music and our reactions to it more completely, whiney's public-shaming caprices are just as useful as collective overpraise parties or discussions about diversity and representation or dismissive pile-ons. and they're usually entertaining.

adam, Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:23 (eight years ago) link

he was poking fun at the reaction by people on that thread not the music or the artist. He said he likes it ffs.

adam, Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:24 (eight years ago) link

For those of you who have wondered why people rarely start threads about new records these days... it's because people still start threads like this bullshit.

emil.y, Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

there's such a gulf between the handful of enthused posters on the KAS thread and the level of overhype that would merit a thread like this. whiney we see embarrassing shit on twitter every day from professional critics desperate to be part of this month's buzz which often doesn't even have the mitigating factor of being genuine, why single out the praise for THIS relatively unbuzzed-about album for mockery? i mean did you see the reaction to that fucking terrible new drake single on twitter yesterday? how people are convinced young thug is the second coming? the acres of shitty purple prose churned out about radiohead or animal collective over the years?

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:07 (eight years ago) link

Yeah otm, the KAS thread was just people expressing enthusiasm for a record without any ulterior motive or guile.

To be fair to whiney -- and i wouldn't go too far with this, believe me -- he seems to embody a type of attitude that was popular on this board years ago and isn't so much now. He likes a lot of music and has fierce opinions so he'd be good to have around if he would cut out this kind of hardman bullshit.

Treeship otm, and I think I clearly misjudged by making a circa-2007-style ILX thread in 2016.

I stand by this thread being funny, but the keeping it negative dickhole zing crew isn't exactly rushing in here to defend me or it

If the new terms of ILX means that making fun of earnest, enthusiastic posts is implicitly sexist and ableist and bullying, then I'm 100% fine with forks deleting this thread and personally taking a break until I'm ready to fit in with the new tone of the site.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:20 (eight years ago) link

Because it doesn't bother you at all that the person you made fun of had a reaction? Only 'the new terms of ILX' matters?

I think there's still a place for gentle ribbing here but I can't speak to your true intentions with threads like this overall.

Evan, Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:29 (eight years ago) link

It bothers me that she thought it was somehow motivated or predicated on me knowing she was a woman and/or autistic. It wasn't, and I certainly didn't mean to remind anyone of mansplaining show bros.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:30 (eight years ago) link

the reason people are suspicious of your motives is that the KAS thread wasn't especially gushing or OTT even for this year alone (see: king, 1975, young thug)
