anyway you should learn something about the history of iran before you comment on savak, tom d
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 20:26 (eight years ago) link
I thought the US-backed coup in iran was seen as bad primarily because it was a subversion of popular will that enraged the middle east against us, not because the Shah committed lots of atrocities or anything. Not that his govt was great, I just don't think it was particularly terrorizing.

Really? You think that will make me look more kindly on them?
― Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 20:33 (eight years ago) link
actually, savak did commit lots of atrocities against the enemies of the regime! torture, extrajudicial killing, etc. but that sort of thing had been the rule and not the exception in iran, both by gov't and non gov't players for, i dunno, all of recorded history?
sorry if i seem angry, it's just that the comment was extremely stupid
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 20:37 (eight years ago) link
What comment was extremely stupid?

xpost hey for all i know you're an expert on iranian history, but honestly i can't figure any other explanation for your extremely stupid comment

i'm sure the secret police would've been much kinder under mossadegh
― the late great, Tuesday, April 5, 2016 8:20 PM (12 minutes ago)
i can't tell whether you're being sarcastic or not but i've read a fair bit about mossadegh and am unfamiliar w/ any notable abuses of civil liberties that he was responsible for, certainly not on the level of the shah, but i assume you know much more than i do about general iranian history so am curious to hear more

Not saying the Shah didn't commit any atrocities, I'm just saying that the reason we usually see the US criticized for its role in the coup has more to do with our overall attitude toward middle east policy and self-determination than it does with that, which makes the Shah an odd fit on this list.

Kind of odd they'd leave MARCOS off the list and instead point to the JSOC as a "death squad".

Voted Pat Sajak.

Yeah ok so maybe they do have a point about the JSOC, but still...Marcos.

Most exciting moment was before the trial got underway this morning. The lights briefly went out, it was pitch black inside the courtroom. When the lights came back on, somebody shouted, "He's gone!" Chapo hadn't moved. Everybody laughed, except maybe the US Marshals.— Keegan Hamilton (@keegan_hamilton) January 8, 2019
