This is gonna be an interesting week of reviews

queen elseq of ærendelle (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 13:58 (seven years ago) link

xp:
publicist was not pleased that i mentioned the larkin grimm accusations, as i'm one of the only writers reviewing the album thus far to have done so (not trying to brag, i'm sure another major outlet will though...right)

my editor calmed him down by conceding to correct one fact that was actually wrong (grimm was not dropped from her label immediately after the alleged assault)

if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

which seemed absurdly hair-splitting to me, but we're not getting sued for libel

also prob not getting review copies and from young god records anytime soon either, somehow i can live with that

I guess you must have elaborated on that whole thing a little more than I imagine others have or plan to in their reviews.

Evan, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:23 (seven years ago) link

i thought it was irresponsible not to parallel it to the story behind the album's lead single, which is about gira's wife's own sexual assault (sung by her)

if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:36 (seven years ago) link

Definitely, but you perhaps dived in a little more than others might? However I haven't looked at any other reviews yet.

Evan, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:41 (seven years ago) link

That seems like a dumb move on the publicist's part. If word gets around that they're discouraging mentioning Grimm, it might just be a spur to do so.

jmm, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:43 (seven years ago) link

Is it about what your previous wording implied or that you mentioned in at all?

Evan, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

it*

Evan, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

i imagine a combination of both (it's the publicist's job to make his client look good, can't really blame him for doing his job), but according to my editor, the publicist conceded that the situation "is what it is" and didn't ask us to remove the reference to the assault itself. i was basing it off grimm's official statement on the matter as quoted by other media outlets, the wording of which indicates that she was dropped after confronting gira about the incident. her original post has been deleted but can be read here http://pitchfork.com/news/63799-swans-michael-gira-issues-statement-on-rape-accusations-larkin-grimm-responds/ and prob other places

if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:53 (seven years ago) link

i've read like 3 or 4 other reviews of the record that don't mention any of this, but haven't checked if any new ones have or have not mentioned it

if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 14 June 2016 15:54 (seven years ago) link

I had a note from the UK publicist asking what pics and so on we needed for a review. I replied that I was very much in two minds about whether to review it, because of the allegations and Gira's response to them. I didn't get a reply to that, which rather surprised me. I haven't commissioned a review, because it would only be a 160 word review, in which space you either talk only about the allegations or not about them at all, neither of which work for me.

I was disappointed the Uncut review - by a writer I like - was a long one that made no mention of anything other than the record, and was even accompanied by a short interview with Gira. Which seemed a whitewash.

How in the world is this hair-splitting? Your original wording clearly suggests cause and effect

Wimmels, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 18:02 (seven years ago) link

yeah, that doesn't seem like an insignificant detail

circa1916, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

xp her original statement is what suggests cause and effect, and i noted that, while also including what gira's claims are.

she /was/ dropped from young god in 2008. whether the dropping happened days after grimm's confrontation of gira about the incident or weeks/months after that, while a factual hill on which to die, seems an odd one on which to do so /given/ the greater severity of the accusations themselves, yanno? but whatever. the matter of chronology has been corrected to the pub's liking.

newsletter:

Hello Folks,

Short note here to let you know that my Europe Solo Tour commences on February 6.
If you're interested, tour dates and ticket info here: https://younggodrecords.com/pages/tour-dates
I've been working on new songs, and I'll be performing those as well as some older material.
The new songs are the first steps on my way to formulating the next Swans album. They're quite heavy on the words - the longest narrative songs I've written. Still finding my way into them, but I think they're good. If you attend one of the shows, I hope they offer something worthwhile... I suspect that the next Swans album will be a variety of these songs, highly (and I hope, tastefully) orchestrated, and then perhaps in opposition some more atmospheric pieces which will draw on and extend the approach evidenced in the more "sfumato" moments on the last few Swans albums... That's a long way off, and a lot of work and thought involved before I embark on that next venture. In the meantime, I'll be doing a series of short Solo Tours, both in Europe and USA...

I've completed a new collection of short stories, written over the past year or so. It's called The Egg, and it's available here: https://younggodrecords.com/products/michael-gira-the-egg
The collection features some rather vivid and wonderful illustrations by Nicole Boitos. It's a limited edition. It can be found at the link or at my live shows... I thought for a while that this area of my mind was closed off forever, but as it happens, the spigot has opened up a bit and I hope to have more fiction in the near future...

Soundtracks for the Blind is finished and is in the pipeline. It's taken forever to figure out the packaging and to master it properly. It will be available as a 4xVinyl set, as well as a 3xCD (the 3rd CD is the long out of print Die Tur Ist Zu). Release for Soundtracks will be in May. Die Tur Ist Zu will also be available soon as a limited 3 sided vinyl release, the 4th side being an etched graphic. It will be available for Record Store Day, April 21st in North America (Mute to release at a later date).

Later in the year, we'll also be putting together a live Swans album of material from this recent, now past formidable line up. We did a great deal of live recordings. I'm still sifting through it...

And more Swans catalog rereleases of course along the way...
