He signals the end of the comedian as we knew him — reclusive, angry, socially awkward, anguished, self-defeating.

I don't think that is automatically a bad thing. I may not be a huge fan of Dane Cook but I don't like the author's assumption that you can't be both a normal person and be a great comic. The funny comedian with a dark, dark secret is also a pretty stale clichè in itself.

big love is well acted, well written, sexy and has excellent tone. its also really dull

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 07:50 (seventeen years ago) link

that whole "comedy is PAIN" line is also pretty wrong anyway -- i mean you have the whole tradition of cornball late 70s comedy, you have blue collar foxworthy type comedy, etc. i mean there's really only a certain alt-comedy canon that sticks to it at all.

if the line had been "the end of the comedian as we knew him -- occasionally funny" then it might have made a bit more of a point.

yeh but cornball late 70s comedy and blue collar foxworthy comedy BLOW. GIMME PAIN!

eleven months pass...

Revive on the almost-anniversary of the last post. I almost want to disinfect my computer screen every time a Good Luck Chuck ad appears.

I'd never seen the guy til these promos for postseason baseball he's doing for Fox, and I didn't know it was him until today. DIE.

his "relationshit" joke has the merit of being the least funny joke ever made

Jessica’s hot. Dane’s funny. Dan’s perverted. See their movie. Good Luck Chuck, in theaters Sept 21.

and that's surprising how?

Wrinklepaws, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

A few months ago I searched Zach Galifinakias (sp?) vids on youtube. They ALL sucked. Not funny. (Well maybe except the Kanye video rip.) Then I searched the much maligned Dane Cook and lolled and roffled and lmaod. Utterly pedestrian stuff but the dude just has 'it'.

NOTA BENE anyone who likes Earl should be gassed.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:43 (sixteen years ago) link

wait are you serious? zach is amazing. dude can work a crowd like a mofo.

Maybe it's just what's available on youtube. I'd make it a point, back in the day, to catch him whenever he was on Leno Or Letterman or Conan, and I loved him. I think he's losing it though. Check out his appearance at SXSW opening for Dane. He is fucking pitiful. (it's on youtube)

xp to chaki

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:48 (sixteen years ago) link

and yeah that vid max linked to: UGHHHH

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link

he seems to be really bitter and jaded in his performances as of late. dane cook plays "roman polanski" in windy city heat. lol

chaki, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i just rewatched the SXSW clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UYh8RYMbp4

and it doesn't seem so bad this time. i actually like the fact that once he realizes he's not exactly preaching to the choir, but rather probably a bunch of frat fuxx, he bails.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:57 (sixteen years ago) link

'it'

omar little, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 01:16 (sixteen years ago) link

omar little, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 01:22 (sixteen years ago) link

i saw this fucking guy in a trailer and he seems awful. obviously in five years when he's done a movie with peter weir or ang lee or whatever future-gershy will revive this and laugh at me.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

ang lee's next movie- "Wilde", starring dane muthafucking cook. Five Stars, The Observer.

these "record breaking" stand up sets are not impressive at all.

chaki, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

that zach g clip upthread looks really old (no beard!)?

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

anything i thought it was funny. sorta reminds me of michael showalter's catskills comedian bit in wet hot american summer.

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think Cook is great shakes either but I've listened to plenty of his stuff in my brother's car and I think he has a lot more going for him than many here credit him with (He really IS funny sometimes). I still prefer Patton Oswalt or even David Cross when he decides to be funny and not whiny, but honestly guys like Bill Maher and Lewis Black could die in a horrible elevator accident and that would be less of a loss to funny than if Dane Cook missed one show after coming down with a cold.

Also, this may be setting the bar low, but during my viewing of the most recent Comic Relief, Dane Cook was the only one who made me laugh out loud.
