I would not either

also "loving someone" is weird, it's easily my least favorite track on the album and yet i know several people who think it's the best thing ever

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:07 (seven years ago) link

yeah "loving someone" is the only one i routinely skipz

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 May 2016 16:12 (seven years ago) link

skip...............

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 May 2016 16:12 (seven years ago) link

it would be a great bonus track maybe, but it's the only song that breaks the album's flow.I really like the song on its own though, the verses are where it's at, dull chorus though.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 13 May 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link

the production on the second verse of "if i believe you" routinely blows me away. the sudden choir bursts, the decaying percussion

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 13 May 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

the production on that entire song is unbelievable. the way his voice mutates slowly mutates into a robot's on the outro is one of my fav parts on the entire album.

the album is stylistically all over the place & better for it. chorus is awesome

i absolutely love "loving someone" but then i also enjoyed large swathes of the ed sheeran album so

WE'RE ALL HUMAN
WE'RE JUST LIKE YOU MAN
WE'RE SENTIENT OR SOMETHING OR OTHER I CAN'T REMEMBER WHATEVER

and i think it flows very well in the album, the "you should be loving someone" opening as the echoes of a ghost that haunts the characters of "somebody else" or something or other

be honest y'all are being unfair to it bc it's sandwiched btwn the 2 best songs of all time

uberweiss, Saturday, 14 May 2016 18:20 (seven years ago) link

idk it's grown on me a lot but it's still a lesser "so far it's alright"

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Saturday, 14 May 2016 18:27 (seven years ago) link

also the thought of the album not starting with "the 1975" into "love me" is making me want to kill myself your tracklist edits are offensive

uberweiss, Saturday, 14 May 2016 19:11 (seven years ago) link

don't get me wrong I really really like Loving Someone it's just an awkward moment in the flow

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 14 May 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

I think this album's sprawlingness is a big part of its charm so my edit would keep it more or less as it is, with possible removal of If I Believe You to irritate the real headz

'if i believe you' is p good actually. i wouldn't change it at all

yeah jeez

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 15 May 2016 19:23 (seven years ago) link

i had to hear it not on a loud tube train where the subtleties were lost

this is srsly the most a band has ever improved between 1st and 2nd album tho

lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 15 May 2016 19:29 (seven years ago) link

I still like the first one more

Spottie, Sunday, 15 May 2016 22:13 (seven years ago) link

The difference isn't as great as imago pretends anyway; if you work off the deluxe version of the debut it basically disappears.

Tim F, Sunday, 15 May 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link

Yeah

Spottie, Sunday, 15 May 2016 22:21 (seven years ago) link

it's a big improvement but it's not like where they started is anywhere close to bad. the biggest improvement is probably just the increased focus on the production from having a bigger budget?

Loving Someone is definitely one of the weaker tracks but I wouldn't skip it, and it's better than So Far (It's Alright) for sure

ufo, Sunday, 15 May 2016 23:48 (seven years ago) link

"So Far (It's Alright)" has better lyrics - some of Matt's best probably.

Tim F, Sunday, 15 May 2016 23:50 (seven years ago) link

yeah that really makes all the difference

plus laura nyro sample

Loving Someone is my daughter's favourite track.
Also, THAT'S THE ONE WHERE SOMETHING I WROTE ABOUT THEM GOT TURNED INTO A LYRIC!

Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Monday, 16 May 2016 09:31 (seven years ago) link

i want their next album to be entirely written in turrican quotes

Surely that was the video for The Sound?

Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Monday, 16 May 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link

Ah, incorporating journalistic quotes into your material. Shrewd move.

Turrican, Monday, 16 May 2016 12:55 (seven years ago) link

One thing is for sure, if '80s revivalism winds up becoming a joke I'll be holding these dickheads solely responsible. They're certainly doing more than their bit.

Turrican, Monday, 16 May 2016 13:01 (seven years ago) link

They could retire, give all their money was going to Syrian refugees, spend the rest of the lives working in camps with said refugees, disavow all their music and insist all future royalties were devoted to anonymously boosting education and health spending and you'd still accuse them of cynicism.

Roaming gang of aggressive circlepits (ithappens), Monday, 16 May 2016 14:05 (seven years ago) link

Damn lack of edit post function: "give all their money to Syrian refugees"

you're saying this nearly a decade after 'it was acceptable in teh 80s' helped transform calvin harris into a huge pop-edm force smh

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 16 May 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

anyone else at the brooklyn show tonight?

all told i'd prob prefer to see them again in a smaller venue but it was a really edifying show. i feel like if they wrote 5 more songs like "the sound" they could be the biggest band in the world but it's cool that they don't and have teenagers grooving to shit like "a change of heart" and d'angelo's trumpet player's flugelhorn solo on some robo-gospel stadium song. they really sold "the sound" actually it was prob my fav moment of the night & obv that's far from my fav song of theirs. the crowd also seemed really into "loving someone". also maybe we're so distanced from "the city" and "chocolate" that it's hard to remember what they actually sound like but it sounded to me like they were playing them w/ more groovy guitar figures a la "girls" which was pretty cool.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 May 2016 04:54 (seven years ago) link

I love Change of Heart but live his voice is really thin and whiny on it. On the record it's deep, lush, enveloping. :(

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 29 May 2016 16:36 (seven years ago) link

i'd given the 1995 wide berth based soley on their name (despite making substanial room in my life for king gizzard and the lizard wizard), but i like it when you sleep for you are a fiona apple album is pretty okay. they're better at soulful ballads than upbeat 80s dance pop, and i have no use whatsoever for the owl city ambient that bloats the album's midsection, but it boils down to a solid 45 minutes:

Love Me
UGH!
Change of Heart
She's American
If I Believe You
Somebody Else
The Sound
Paris
Nana
She Lays Down

most of those listed tracks are dance pop though

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 May 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

yeah, it felt too mean to cut "love me" and "the sound". with "nana", those'd be the next to go.

favorites are "change of heart", "if i believe you", "paris" and "she lays down".

Least essential takes

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 29 May 2016 20:37 (seven years ago) link

noooooooope nope nope nope

j. winters (josh), Sunday, 29 May 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

lol, they sound to me like a band struggling to disguise themselves, and they do it reasonably well. but it's only when they relax into sap that they really convince me.

They could always disguise themselves as a non-functioning band.

Turrican, Sunday, 29 May 2016 21:16 (seven years ago) link

What does that even mean

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 30 May 2016 00:44 (seven years ago) link

it means turrican really just can't let go of this one

art baengels (monotony), Monday, 30 May 2016 02:22 (seven years ago) link

Just chiming in since I was very late to the party due to their horrible name, but what great songs and sound - both albums are very strong and "This Must Be My Dream" is perfect summer driving music. Love how they use 80s signifiers as a tool rather than pastiche (why I also love Haim).
