weird mmorpg campaign against 'geriatric' liberals
can we throw a bunch of threads on to a board with this title?

the weird twitter / alt-left twitter line is really blurry at best and the problem is "weird" performative behavior is really just a hop and a slip-up away from ugly trolling.like comedians who find themselves all of a sudden losing audiences (and bookings) because they didn't set up their use of homophobic and racist slurs as well as Louis C.K.

idk all the details, but we've kind of reached the point where criticizing person x's views and "organizing a harassment campaign" against person x can look pretty similar from person x's point of view. there's always pool of angry leftists/trump supporters/russian troll army just looking for a target, so anything that directs attention to a person can result in a tidal wave of shit, especially on twitter.
also this stuff reminds me of this from a month ago:http://nymag.com/selectall/2016/04/how-social-autopsy-fell-for-gamergate-trutherism.html. basically no one knows which way is up online.

@jonathanchaitFollowing up from my hasty tweets last night, if Demos's account is true, firing @MattBruenig is clearly justifed
@HeerJeet@jonathanchait I'm glad to see that you've changed your mind on political correctness.

lol I had no idea bruenig was a lawyer. he always kinda seemed like the most erudite and polite of the whole crew, writing pedantic blog posts about 'pragmatic sovereign wealth fund socialism'. he was pretty nice to Jamel's bound when everyone was hanging up on him last week. it's the army of fyad dudes that show up anytime they smell blood that kind of turn the corner into harassment... there can be some lols to be had but the worst is when they think they're accomplishing something like

like... yea i don't care... the tweets are bad now...
btw I hate he sneering reproach with which sanders supporters use the word "liberals". you gotta be a full commie or right wing to use liberals as a pejorative imo not just someone who wants single payer. I like shitlibs though

i think there was something about his summarizing someone else's argument about racism being an impediment to a stronger u.s. labor movement in a tweet and maybe getting some little detail wrong or something. and subsequently getting jumped on by some segment of lefty twitter. my eyes glazed over pretty quickly. fwiw i think matt bruenig and jamelle have prob met irl and have fairly respectful relationship on twitter.

Connor Kilpatrick wrote an article for Jacobin arguing that any progressive movement worthy of the name can't write the white working class off as uniformly racist and unsalvageable and Bouie suggested he was asking people to ignore racism. It's essentially the same argument people have been having for months but less heated and more civil than most of the recent stuff.

anyway weird twitter was kinda over when those dudes all started earnestly podcasting, which is the bacon of viral media, but i like how mean and shitty they are to ppl like arthur chu. but i liked how shitty ppl on ilx were to lames when i first started posting here maybe glib bullying of idiot herbs a lost legacy of old internet idk
― ( ^_^) (Lamp), Monday, 23 May 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link
i'm a v polite and private person so the mean shittiness to lame people never really sits right with me. struggling to articulate this but there's no meaning to 'silence' on twitter. there's no substitute for the cold shoulder or the polite 'uh ok thanks' kinds of social enforcement. so people flap their gums in careless or ardent ways until, idk, a clique of slightly more literate people flood him with zoomed-in pics of his avi for an afternoon. is there a non-mean way to shut someone up? esp if their whole deal is that they 'don't get it'?
during the more nerd-centric controversies i kind of liked arthur chu just because he kept on top of all that shit day in day out; now that we're in an electoral moment i'm not even sure his heart's in the right place tbh. really shallow pov.
but more broadly i'm like, why do i even have an opinion?

hello tribalism
― F♯ A♯ (∞), Monday, 23 May 2016 19:54 (seven years ago) link
xxxp i think that's good, about silence. there are instances where people will 'go silent', e.g. when some shit goes down and 'everyone' expects them to say something for themselves and they don't post anything at all (c.f. SFJ's tweeter for the past couple weeks for a minor example), and there's some meaning to not replying or continuing to reply to being @ed, like the usual letting-drop of any conversational exchange in other settings. but it's not visible to others in the same way, as just sitting there out in the open, i guess—since everyone has to work to find it or they have to have exerted lots of choices to end up being people who follow the people involved in the exchange, it's kind of like a 'silence' can't be let to have its meaning—to make it meaningful you have to make it meaningful, which of course ruins it.
― j., Monday, 23 May 2016 19:57 (seven years ago) link
idk, the people you follow, even if diverse in opinions and politics make up an ad hoc "tribe" and I'd be surprised if many people follow a of of moderate people outside of their views, let alone virulent ones (outside of the hate-following that's mainly used to dogpile on every post someone makes)
my filtering is more of the "hi, you're someone I respect and/or like but you tweet about your dog Cletus every day and I don't need to hear about Cletus every day to know he's still a good dog"
― μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 23 May 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link
tbf Cletus probably appreciates it, though
that's not the way tribe works

All I want to do is see a list of twitter users who are followed by the people that I already follow, ideally ranked descending by the number of people who I already follow who follow that person. Am I crazy or is this really not possible!?
The "suggestions" page shows some of them, although it is also liberally sprinkled with twitter users who are not followed by any of the other people that I follow. However, I am constantly finding users who are followed by MANY of the people who I also follow, and yet do not appear on my suggestions list (and believe me, I scrolled way, way down until it started showing me eg. Kim Kardashian and Jimmy Fallon). What gives? Is there some third party site where I can find this?

in terms of the tribalism thing... i know Twitter can totally amplify the echo chamber effect but I follow a pretty wide variety politically and I actually feel it gives me the opposite; I'm much less confident in my ideological priors than I used to be... I don't really follow many *actual* conservatives, maybe like Pethokoukis or Charles Murray are the worst but definitely exposed to a lot more libertarian and centrist ideas than before. when I first started out on Twitter it was all leftists and sjw and it drove me crazy, such a fn downer. a lot of my favourite content on Twitter is between ideological opponents, which was one of the reasons I really liked Matt Bruenig. a lot of the contemporary left like to show off a distaste for wonkish liberalism but are too dumb or too bored by details of policy to coherently argue against it specifically or meaningfully and just blather on the old tired relativistic routine about ideology you hear in college. it was nice to see someone crunch the numbers and argue with a self-described neoliberal like Adam ozimek about welfare, taxes and all that stuff. I definitely learned a lot both ways

flopson, you are in the minority, and:
the first tweets at the top of your timeline won’t necessarily be the latest ones. They’ll be the tweets the service’s algorithm determines most relevant to you, based on a variety of factors. Rather than show you the tweets from 10 seconds before you opened the app, it will now attempt to catch you up on the most important #content since you left.

i pay for tweetbot because it doesn't have these features
plus it syncs timeline, notifications etc across devices (still kind of awed that twitter doesn't do this. it treats its own content like it's a POP3 mail service from 1994)
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link
I'm an avid tweetbot user, but find myself needing to open the official twitter app more and more, to my dismay, because it's terrible. But tweetbot still hasn't implemented viewing more than one photo in a tweet, doesn't play gifs or vines properly, doesn't support Twitter polls, and is clunky when you want to quote rt someone. They need to step up their game.
In other news, twitters decision to show @replies in all TL's of one's followers and allow up to 50 (!) @'s in one tweet is a terrible, terrible idea.
