Are we supposed to know who the little green wood nymphettes are?

the one rad episode a season - so insulting, so effective

r|t|c, Monday, 23 May 2016 11:08 (seven years ago) link

So it took Littlefinger 10 episodes to get from Winterfell to the Vale, but then the episode after that he's back at Molestown? At this point I'm half expecting it to be foreshadowing for Littlefinger to be a warg of some sorts, able to turn himself into an eagle or whatever. Who even controls Moats Callin at this point?

The twist at the end of this episode has apparently been confirmed as coming from GRRM. Pretty amazing, imo.

Frederik B, Monday, 23 May 2016 12:35 (seven years ago) link

Oh, right, Littefinger says he's troops are at Moats Callin. My bad.

lag∞n, Monday, 23 May 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link

This was directed by Jack Bender, which is probably why the ending felt a bit like Lost

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 23 May 2016 12:59 (seven years ago) link

Feel sad for Hodor but aside from the warging and time travel it's so much like the cannibal in Death Line who repeats "Mind the doors" endlessly.

Don't see the nihilism either. I don't see that the stakes or principles of enjoyment have changed since the beginning.

The visualization of the Children Of The Forest is really jarring. Why the tv science fiction alien race bumpy face? Why the Green Goblin grenades?
Am I right that they created White Walkers to save the trees and it didn't go too well? I wasn't expecting a great origin story but I don't like this one as it currently seems to stand.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 23 May 2016 13:16 (seven years ago) link

It's a bit screwy. According to the legends, the Children were the first people of Westeros. When the men came from Essos, they fought them bitterly, called upon magic to smash the landbridge connecting Dorne to Essos, flooded the Neck making it that much tougher getting to and from the North (which is why Moats Callin is so important, god dammit, and why Littlefinger shouldn't just turn up in Molestown proclaiming that he's taken the place). The White Walkers came during the Long Night, and was fought by men and children together. So. Something is off with the legends if the children actually created the walkers, though I suspect that is the case in the books as well. It makes a twisted kind of sense, and I think one of the Bran visions could be seen as hinting at it. Notice also how the walker is created in a land without snow, credence to the theory that they might have something to do with the strange way the seasons pass in the land.

There was a lot of history on the show, I also liked the story that the faceless men came from the mines of Valyria and founded Braavos. I'm not sure how that jibes with the books, but it's a nice story.

And that final sequence might be the best thing the show has ever done.

Frederik B, Monday, 23 May 2016 13:42 (seven years ago) link

Oh yeah.. Kevin Eldon! Most surprising appearance so far.

So are Theon and crew going to sail to Dany with 20 ships to strike a fellowship before Euron and his 1000 ships arrive?

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 23 May 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link

i like the twist, but they didnt really set it up at all did they? who knew there were significant number of men loyal to theon's sister? no one really spoke up for her when the crazy uncle showed up. and how did they all sneak off during the drowning/coronation?

ryan, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:11 (seven years ago) link

those ships seemed to matter quite a lot, you'd think they would be protected!

ryan, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:11 (seven years ago) link

Yeah that was all a bit convenient for them, but for the sake of moving things along I'm OK with it.

Evan, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:12 (seven years ago) link

so he held the door long enough for bran to get dragged what 30, 40 feet into the snow? they'll never get him now

am0n, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:13 (seven years ago) link

It happens in the book as well, but... The whole thing is massively overcomplicated in the books, and the show streamlined it which left in a bunch of plotholes. Story of the last few seasons, kinda.

Frederik B, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:14 (seven years ago) link

i was hoping the uncle wld just drown and everyone wld be all welp

lag∞n, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:15 (seven years ago) link

Remembering the book now and remembering how there were like a dozen different plots of different characters all on their way to be Dany's husband. Glad the show is ignoring most of them.

dan selzer, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:18 (seven years ago) link

Yes, that was a major WTF for me. As powerful as that scene was, it ultimately shows Hodor's purpose in life was to give a person dragging another person through deep snow maybe a football field of distance ahead of a super nimble undead army?

I guess next episode will probably just cut to them holding their lead but still.

Is Bran going to be trapped in trance state or something? Seems like he should have woken up given the minor racket.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 23 May 2016 15:02 (seven years ago) link

Normally you have to click "eject" before disconnecting.

Evan, Monday, 23 May 2016 15:15 (seven years ago) link

I kine of wondered if he hadn't already disconnected. On one hand, Hoder only did things like that when Bran was warged into him so you'd think he was in there, but on the other hand we want to believe that this was Hoder's whole life's purpose (at least since Bran went back and put that in his head, literally). I'm assuming Hoder was being a hero on his own at the end there, with a lot of mystical prompting past and present of course.

I'm guessing this part of Arya's story will conclude soon. It's not always the most exciting plot thread but right now it's the one I'm most interested in seeing where it goes. There's pretty much no way she'll become a faceless person.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 23 May 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

They've got to get on with it though! When she got her eyes back I was convinced that was that, but nope- more scenes of her getting whacked with a stick.

the setup for arya's impending departure from the house of black and white would've made more sense if she had kicked that girl's ass in their fight this episode. arya is established as a bad ass and it's time to move on. maybe that is too pat and obvious but the alternative - that she leaves and the whole drawn out experience hasn't really resulted in anything at all - is surely worse. it wasn't even close either, that girl fucked her up. the story should be about her instead.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:08 (seven years ago) link

the whole thing is shes not really cut out for this religious assassin life

lag∞n, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:13 (seven years ago) link

I feel like they're driving towards her ultimately leaving without converting fully while still being able to abuse the face-swapping/fighting skillz she picked up during her training.

Evan, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:14 (seven years ago) link

also like how far will she go against her presumed innate starkian qualities before turning back xp

Clay, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

What's a Stark quality? Dying?

Evan, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:17 (seven years ago) link

She's gonna pull a Luke Skywalker.

dan selzer, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

I think a lot of that audience hates that girl and wants Arya to beat her up. I think the girl also has a bit of an ego for a supposedly faceless person and she might suffer for it.

I really don't think Arya will be able to complete the training because Jaqen will probably know if she still wants to be a Stark. And I don't think all this training will yield nothing.

sarahell, Monday, 23 May 2016 18:57 (seven years ago) link

seems like hes just trying to get her to attack winterfell and the point of that meeting was to tell her that her uncle has an army that can help, once the boltons are gone he becomes the warden of the north
