HBO's adaptation of Game of Thrones - Thread 2. There are a lot of nerds.

can we speculate freely on this thread now? in any case i was reading the wiki for the children and this part was interesting:

For roughly 2,000 years the two races fought a desperate war for dominance. The children used their magic to shatter the Arm of Dorne, the land-bridge through which the First Men came, in a futile attempt to end the invasion and later flooded the Neck - where legend has it that the children called upon their gods from the Children's Tower to send the hammer of the waters to smash the Neck, as they smashed the Arm of Dorne, but it was not enough to stop the advance of the First Men. The histories say that some of the First Men, the crannogmen, grew close to the children of the forest in the days when the greenseers tried to bring the hammer of the waters down upon the Neck.[5]

Eventually the First Men and the children fought one another to a standstill. The two races agreed to peaceful coexistence and signed the Pact on the Isle of Faces, granting the open lands to humanity and the forests to the children.

The Pact lasted for 4,000 years before the enigmatic Others invaded from the uttermost north, bringing death and destruction to both races, during an extended period of winter known as the Long Night. The children of the forest joined with the First Men, lead by the last hero, to fight against the Others in the Battle for the Dawn. Eventually the Others were driven back into the Lands of Always Winter.

so...if they created the Others during that 2000 year war why did it take 4000 more years for the Others to become a problem? im sure there's an explanation, it's just a weird timeline.

You know, it's so in line with fan theories that actually exist that I didn't even blink.

xp

Not your fault though I skimmed over the "it's too confusing" giveaway.

Evan, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

Then he sold Sansa to Ramsey which... Yeah, I don't get that part either...

I figured that was his way to break the Boltons from the Lannisters. And Cersei sent him to take Winterfell so it worked i guess.

did anyone ever watch the youtube back history videos, with the story told via a series of drawings and narration from some of the actors?

i reckon i enjoyed them as much as the show. i recommend them highly. they also give a good context for everything and remove the need to read the books.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 15:59 (seven years ago) link

i liked those videos a lot. i think one of the main strengths of Martin's universe is the layered and complex historical/mythological context.

ryan, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:00 (seven years ago) link

yeah they were really nicely made - and short enough that i found myself just checking them out bit by bit.

hey guys I was confused during that flashback Arya was watching. Did they totally recast Ned and Joffrey and Tyrion? Contract issues? Sansa's boobs were a body double's right? Show is going down the dumper.

but within the show we're watching average citizens playacting as the characters we know, so why would the show cast the actors we know as those characters in the play instead of new actors who look kinda like them? to have sean bean playing an actor impersonating ned stark would be weird & wouldn't make any sense

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:16 (seven years ago) link

as for littlefinger he more or less fled to a place he knew he would be protected and disappeared for like multiple seasons. he ventured out again to see sansa -- which was a miscalculation on his part because he prob underestimated her & she could have brianne kill him -- but i suspect she doesn't mind having him around because he's already shown a willingness to go to great lengths to protect her and because he has this devotion to her she prob feels like she can manipulate him if need be (and in this episode we see her manipulate jon)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link

Plus, when his head gets chopped off and you pause it you can clearly see it's not the actor's real head.

Evan, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link

the guts were real tho i think

it would be more obviously ned stark. the fact they cast another acting as someone ACTING as ned stark confused me at the beginning. still not sure i understand it really.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:22 (seven years ago) link

thought ned died but in this show who knows.

leaving aside how ned stark came back to life - he did seem a bit different also when playing himself in the play. sending a message to arya?

he is looking great tho, hasn't aged a day since the devil's own.

one thing this show loves to do is have characters give meaningful, heartfelt speeches and then someone nearby says "yeah but you have no penis" and everyone laughs

ulysses, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:55 (seven years ago) link

It was weird when they did that after Cersei's speech

Evan, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

the ultimate own

lag∞n, Tuesday, 24 May 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

i admit i laughed when Euron (sp?) responded to Theon's use of "galvanting" with "is that the kind of word you use when your cock has been cut off?" or something like that.
