a lot of my favourite content on Twitter is between ideological opponents, which was one of the reasons I really liked Matt Bruenig.

yeah people are acting like he flamed jonathan chait daily when his real thing was driving minor cato/reason/manhattan inst people around the bend

flopson, you are in the minority, and:

the first tweets at the top of your timeline won’t necessarily be the latest ones. They’ll be the tweets the service’s algorithm determines most relevant to you, based on a variety of factors. Rather than show you the tweets from 10 seconds before you opened the app, it will now attempt to catch you up on the most important #content since you left.

i pay for tweetbot because it doesn't have these features

plus it syncs timeline, notifications etc across devices (still kind of awed that twitter doesn't do this. it treats its own content like it's a POP3 mail service from 1994)

I'm an avid tweetbot user, but find myself needing to open the official twitter app more and more, to my dismay, because it's terrible. But tweetbot still hasn't implemented viewing more than one photo in a tweet, doesn't play gifs or vines properly, doesn't support Twitter polls, and is clunky when you want to quote rt someone. They need to step up their game.

In other news, twitters decision to show @replies in all TL's of one's followers and allow up to 50 (!) @'s in one tweet is a terrible, terrible idea.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

you guys you can turn the whole showing the most important recent content shit off in Twitter.app's settings

Clay, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 19:06 (seven years ago) link

But tweetbot still hasn't implemented viewing more than one photo in a tweet
It has, it's just bloody difficult to use. You have to swipe through the images when you're looking at them, and there's no indication you can do this.

allow up to 50 (!) @'s in one tweet is a terrible, terrible idea.
There's a super-important bit here which they haven't explained, which is you can't just type in 50 @names, because manually-typed @s count against your 140 limit. The free ones are those Twitter adds when you hit "reply". So it's going to pretty hard (though not impossible natch) to get together a posse of arseholes to attack someone via this route.

stet, Thursday, 26 May 2016 13:02 (seven years ago) link

I had no idea about seeing the multiple images through swiping! Strange there's no arrow or whatever indicating you can (or something telling you there are more photos in the first place).

Thanks for explaining the 50 @'s. I was afraid of the Attack of the 50 @'s tbh, but that seems quite hard, the way you put it.

there are little white dots beneath the images, which are supposed to indicate a 'carousel' concept

Idk with every new hack the impact of such a hack is getting less and less isn't it? Two years ago Id've frantically checked if my account would be among those. Now, seeing what you just posted and caring about my Twitter account, I just shrug. Hacked? Ok, that's life I suppose. *changes pw and flames on*

According to former employees, the external pressures — stagnant growth, media scrutiny, and constant personnel shifts — even created fissures in Twitter’s once rock-solid free speech defense. Shortly after news broke that Zelda Williams was leaving Twitter, Costolo was getting DMs and texts from Hollywood agents at firms like CAA, threatening to pull their high-profile celebrity clients off Twitter if Costolo didn’t stop harassment. Costolo scrambled, ordering teams to delete offending accounts and tweets. Weeks later, when a rash of beheading videos appeared, Costolo gave similar takedown orders, causing Twitter’s free speech advocates, Gabriel Stricker and Vijaya Gadde, to call an emergency policy meeting.

Inside the meeting, attended by Costolo, Stricker, Gadde, and product head Kevin Weil (now Instagram’s product lead) and first reported by BuzzFeed News, tensions rose as Costolo’s desire to build a more palatable network that was marketable and ultimately attractive to new users clashed with Stricker and Gadde’s desire for radically free expression.

“You really think we should have videos of people being murdered?” someone who attended the meeting recalls Costolo arguing, while Stricker reportedly compared Costolo’s takedown of undesirable content to deleting the Zapruder film after objections from the Kennedy family. Ultimately, the meeting ended with the group deciding to carve out policy exceptions to keep up grisly content for newsworthiness, according to one person present. Though Stricker and Gadde won, one source described a frustrated Costolo leaving in disagreement. “I think if you guys have your way the only people using Twitter will be ISIS and the ACLU,” Costolo said, according to this person.

goole, Thursday, 11 August 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

imo you have a shaky concept of "free speech" if it's some absolutism that allows people to stifle others through noise, threats, and actionable harassment

mh, Thursday, 11 August 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

your ability to speak freely is somewhat hampered by unrestricted death threats

that's just my take on it, though

mh, Thursday, 11 August 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

I think the Silicon Valley idea of free speech is an interesting one because they go from advocating the value of free speech (yes, sure, that's good) to then insisting that all such speech must in principle be be allowed expression on their particular platform. they cannot abide the idea that certain constraints on speech often make such platforms better and more inviting to users because to create such constraints then guarantees that there might be other places that people go to express themselves. it's against their business model to put in place limits on speech, and not really any kind of ethical attachment to the principle. they can't really square the circle of "here everyone can express themselves freely" with the reality that this idea will inevitably silence others in that space.
