Well the "now you become me" comment combined with the time warp suggests that this show wants him to be bran but what do i know?

Conan the Barbarian looked p good, was that epic enough

You mean OG or the one with Khal Drogo?

Ahnuld version

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:20 (seven years ago) link

It has good looking parts but I've never liked the Arnie Conan films. People who think that's the best version of Conan (books, comics or screen) are nuts.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

Haven't seen the Khal Drogo version but he definitely looks more like Conan.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

why look at the world created in conan the destroyer when you can drink in the acting prowess of arnold, wilt chamberlain and grace fucking jones?

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:34 (seven years ago) link

More recent Conan was trash anyway.
Not read much Howard. My elder brother was into him in his early teens. He's now been in the SWP forabout 35 years. Is that bad pendulum thought or something?

Thought some of the 70s comics looked pretty good. But still not read that many.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 18:34 (seven years ago) link

Winterfell and King's Landing and Castle Black all feel like reasonably fleshed out places to me

i've long been bothered by the sense that both are pretty much just a single courtyard w/ a few rooms scattered around the edges. castle black, this supposedly eons-old keep that protects the entirety of civilization from northern invaders, seems barely big enough to house 100 men, if that. oh, and it's got an an elevator. in the early episodes, winterfell was fleshed out ok, but since then, it's shriveled down to that one, dumpy courtyard.

da vinci beaver testicles (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 May 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

Well, there's also the kennel where Ramsay kills people.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, what happened to the elevator budget? We used to see people on that thing all the time.

King's Landing is down to that one room with a table, a couple of hallways. Been a while since we even saw the throne.

They probably have one dark room that they use for all the dark stuff. Kennel, tree room, dragon dungeon, King's Landing dungeon. The Iron Island's room with the fireplace.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 19:49 (seven years ago) link

I forgot there even was a throne. Game of Scenes.

Game of Room

da vinci beaver testicles (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 May 2016 21:20 (seven years ago) link

The geography and architecture and costuming of Astapor and the freeing of the unsullied and gathering the army army was incredibly epic as were the Baratheon siege of Kings Landing, the red wedding and the fighting pit in the colosseum that ended with the Dany flying off on Drogon.

Incidentally, have we ever been to Highgarden in the show? At one point in the negotiations for the financing of the wedding Olleana Tyrell (Diana Rigg) mentions that they have already donated sth like 500,000 soldiers, 300,000 heads of cattle etc. I remember being unconvinced by the numbers anyway.

Why is it called 'thrones' anyway, there's only one throne. Should be Game of Throne.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 21:33 (seven years ago) link

There are definitely other thrones! We've seen the one in Dorne, and the Vale, and ... do Iron Born have a throne? Dothraki have tents. Game of tents.

They've definitely done big and epic, successfully. But lately it seems like there's been a lot of shorthand. Generic establishing shot. Room. Generic establishing shot. Room. Which is how you make things, except they have made a big point of filming all over the world. So why bother? I dunno. It's just seemed so chintzy lately, and when pretty much the entire show hinges on dragons and there are no dragons, it's pretty conspicuous. One is literally off flying around somewhere, and the other two are ... unchained in the basement? Unchained and loose? Who knows.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 21:39 (seven years ago) link

The Iron Born has the Sea Chair. Game of Throne and Chairs. And Seats.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 21:45 (seven years ago) link

The show did show Highgarden didnt it? Am I misremembering? All those gorgeous shots of people taking tea and throwing shade at each other in Croatian gardens full of wisteria?

I think so Trayce, Sansa is in those scenes talking with Diana Rigg and Sansa is def in KL. Also Brienne talks with Diana Rigg after she's delivered Jamie to KL. UNLESS THEY ARE VERY CLOSE GEOGRAPHICALLY? I've no idea.

I think everything they film in Spain looks pretty crap. Not sure why that is but I do recall last year a making-of thing about getting the Spain crew together. I think they go through a lot of line producers because it's such a nightmare production. Maybe they're all just tired. Are they still filming in Croatia?

There's also a bigger budget for the pilot because those sets are meant to more or less last the run, so the initial expense gets paid off down the line. I remember reading somewhere back when Rome came out that they'd need to run four or five seasons to justify the cost of that huge Rome set at Cinecitta.

Gukbe, Thursday, 26 May 2016 01:17 (seven years ago) link

I wonder if bookreaders were disappointed when they first saw the TV version of the iron throne, and how they must look back wistfully every time Dorne pops up.

Gukbe, Thursday, 26 May 2016 01:18 (seven years ago) link

I'm also assuming they're saving up the budget for whatever Winterfell/Bolton confrontation is in the offing, like Hardhome last year.

Gukbe, Thursday, 26 May 2016 01:19 (seven years ago) link

well, yeah because an army of White Walkers will probably show up to that battle too

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 May 2016 07:40 (seven years ago) link

Wondering what revenue the show generates. Is money from the toys going back in to the show or anything?
Or is it all payment for showing in different territories.
Never know how something like a non pay for view tv show works out what it takes in post production and therefore what it can plow back into the show.

Stevolende, Thursday, 26 May 2016 09:57 (seven years ago) link

Was watching "Veep" last night, and there were more extras milling about there than in an average episode of GoT. Maybe they are all CGI?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 May 2016 12:17 (seven years ago) link

Costumes should be a bit easier.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 26 May 2016 12:56 (seven years ago) link

Years ago I wrote a piece about some adult film parody of pirate movies. They said that for extras they just put a call out to pirate re-enactors, who then showed up in full regalia, which made things pretty easy, especially for background actors. I bet GoT does that to some extent, especially on location overseas.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 May 2016 13:26 (seven years ago) link

Can't remember where it was but there was a feature about directors who got annoyed with extras who try to steal the show and sometimes end up in the finished film.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 26 May 2016 13:32 (seven years ago) link

I thought the Renly and Margaery scenes at the beginning of S2 were in Highgarden?

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 May 2016 13:34 (seven years ago) link

I think it's meant to take place at Storms End. I'm not sure if the series has ever gone to the Reach? But Sam and Gilly are going there. It doesn't really sound like the most interesting place, though.

Frederik B, Thursday, 26 May 2016 13:47 (seven years ago) link

I'm not going to go all GoT apologetics here but I imagine that extras in normal clothes / suits on the Veep set takes WAY less logistics than GoT extras in more elaborate wardrobe/make up on location.

shout out to anyone with the patience and generosity of spirit to sincerely engage with josh in chiacgo's feeble trolling on this thread, you are truly the best of humankind

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 26 May 2016 14:10 (seven years ago) link

I'm not trolling, and I really don't think I've been that objectionable on this thread, tbh. It'd be a heck of a thread if it was limited to day-after reactions of "omg, that was so rad! #holdthedoor." I like learning how these adaptations come to be, I like discussing why things turn out the way they do or don't, I like relying on the expertise of people who understand the story better than I do and have something to offer. I enjoy the show enough, which is why I'm still watching it. I've not said anything personal about anyone, I'm not making fun of people watching it. I honestly don't know what the problem is. Just posting too much? Get in line.

xpost I dunno, I can see why it might seem complicated, but I'm not sure it is. The Walking Dead seems to do ok with big hordes of shambling things in the background, and it's a fraction the cost of GoT. I think a few dirty people wearing rags in the background (Monty Python and the Holy Grail style) would go a long way; detailed makeup and fancy costumes only matter for the stuff closer to the foreground. And yeah, the show's pulled it off before, but saying there are hundreds of thousands of people and not ever showing them is similar to talking about dragons and not showing them. It's getting kind of conspicuous, and honestly I think it's weird that everyone is just so inside baseball/blasé about the budget. "Oh, they killed the wolves because they don't have the money." "Oh, this episode was just three people talking because they are saving their budget for a big battle." "We don't see the dragons because dragons are expensive." That to me in a way breaks the illusion as badly as poorly done effects.
