i went through my armando discovery period beginning last year this time and he spent like nine months as my absolute favorite house producer. you should definitely check out this hip-house track he did as the chicago bad boy. like most hip-house, the mc is no rakim allah, but it's got a MURDEROUS bassline that everyone will rock to, and then the synthesizer begins... house music all night long!

house music all night long (armando's club mix) feat. gershon jackson: http://www.sendspace.com/file/wmj78l

A few more Monologue House Picks:

Bobby Kondors - The Poem
Project 86 - Legends
Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads - Mushrooms (Salt City Orchestra Mix)
Derrick Carter - Where U At? (and it's various versions/derivations)

armando's music is criminally hard to find though. he made 4 lps for trax in the 90s that are out of print and offline. as far as i can tell, they're only available on some dodgy russian mp3 sites, if you have a credit card you don't mind canceling immediately after use. if not, you might be able to find the trax classix cd sampler on slsk. there is still a whole lot of his catalogue that i'm still searching after though.

Shackleton feat. Jackson del Rey "Next to Nothing" has a pretty good monologue, although it's not that far in the past and isn't house music. It's a creepy song though.

Sweet Pussy Pauline is one of the ultimate house monologues. Josh Wink's version of that track is a killer (can't seem to find it on discogs unfortunately).

i have an obvious track id request. i've heard it out scads of times, it's a classic. begins acid house, breaks down into a voice repeating 'ecstasy, ecstasy... ecstasy, ecstasy', then goes into repetetive, tuneful synth strings... eventually back to acid, repeat structure ad infinitum. anyone??

Anyone know the last tracks (the last 2 main ones, I guess) on "Detroit is Jacking! The Techno! Megamix" on the New Dance Sound of Detroit comp.

There's audio here. I'm guessing the high pitched string line and the vocals are from different tracks.

one month passes...

Record shopping in Ann Arbor I picked up Audio Werner's "OnandOn," the second set of "Lovelee Dae" remixes and this early Ongaku record, with Fluegel, Heiko Schäfer and Pascal FEOS on it: http://www.discogs.com/release/87514

Does anyone else own Part II of "Lovelee Dae" remixes? For some reason the labels on my records are black, not red as they're depicted on Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/release/6226 Anyone else?

was waiting for someone to revive this thread.

i've been buying alot of george morel records recently, love how his best tracks just streamline these perfect grooves and do little more than bring in a sample or two, or transpose the bassline or something. he mixes really well with recent stuff.

also on a strictly rhythm tip got "witch doktor" by armand van helden which is fucking awesome - such a ridiculous, stupid track! ditto the hardrive ep with deep deep inside on, every track is just great. strictly rhythm releases must've been great value for money

can we talk about the fk1 ep by francois k? i knew him well for his 80s remix work and all that but slept on his 90s house stuff for ages. anyway, i've had this for a few months now but still can't stop playing it. every track on this ep is a work of genius. the track that samples the kecak monkey chant has some astonishing mixing going on, no wonder violator sounds so incredible. i initially though that "hypnodelic" and "mindspeak" were pretty standard up-front detroit-y house tracks, but again after listening more carefully the stereo mix is practically alive with ear candy. the best track is "moov" which is some of the most beautiful melodic dreamy techno i have ever heard, it has a very epic yet understated feel, and again the production and sound design is brilliant.

there's a real acid feel to these tracks, as in, if you listened while tripping, it would be a fine line between bliss and completely doing your head in

Chronicles - Is that the Rush Hour re-issues or something else? love this guy.. Metaphor was pretty much my introduction to 'good' techno.

Xposts. I passed up on buying the Onandon 12" (which I only just realize now is supposed to say on and on) years ago, and here I am now Onandonless while it now remains one of my favourite tracks.

Yeah, the Part II of those "Lovelee Dae" remixes is an absolute corker. (I've got the 2x12" version in a silver sleeve; they did a LOT of editions of the mixes in different combos, from what I can tell.) The Friends Experiment (Michael Mayer & Tobias Thomas) is probably my fave; been playing it quite a lot this year, actually. You can get all the mixes off Beatport as well...

Since chances are it's probably not new, and I'm desperate I'll repost this: I had the always-a-pleasure experience of seeing Vincent Lemieux last night, and anyway he started with this really fantastic, sunshiney house track that went "any day, any time, any way, any how" etc.Anyone know what this is (and not just for my sake but everyones, it's fantastic).

Also, listened to Kalabrese - Auf Dem Hof earlier today and it (the whole 12", but especially the title track) is one of the most majestic pieces of music I've heard in a good day or two.

That's ironic, I've been spending a bunch of time with Black Dog classics since discovering that Soma had re-issued a bunch late last year (news to me!) and finding them in the Rhapsody catalog. In fact, just today I did a little Black Dog blog post on the Rhapsody blog: http://blog.rhapsody.com/2008/10/concentric-pl-1.html

i love the older SR and black dog tracks (C2 too) that use sloppy sounding breakbeats.

tricky, Friday, 17 October 2008 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I dislike those sloppy breakbeats!

Local Garda, Friday, 17 October 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, well, i love them :D

especially when the breakbeats are quantized in their loops but the edges and timing on the sample is slightly incorrect. kinda like the way flying lotus does it.

tricky, Friday, 17 October 2008 18:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm sure there are Black Dog threads but they're mostly full of dog latin complaining loudly about how it's all just terrible keyboard presets and how massively superior Plaid (ffs!) are (a Hey guys!!"Foo Fighters >>> Nirvana" scenario of wrong if ever there was one...) and that LFO are bobbins too

That would require not being horribly shy and terrified of actually taking the initiative to do so. Such is life.

I was thinking of BPD (the real#1 to me) not long ago, after hearing their new single (the one with the Robert hood remixes); it's a beaut. (I must say, though, that whole period from Spanners through to, well, whenever they started sounding like they did at the beginning of the 90's just puts a bad taste in my mouth, and certainly so with Plaid (fandago, OTM). "Trainer" was big-time seriously foundational record for me, and Bytes was not far behind it in terms of personal importance).

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Saturday, 18 October 2008 01:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmm, I LOVE Spanners. "Psil-Cosyin" is sometimes my favourite Black Dog track. So kaleidoscopic.

What don't you like, mehlt? Is it the allusions to Orb/Ultramarine-style "atmosphere" ("Chase The Manhattan" etc.)?

The early stuff is awesome too obv, but for me the whole trajectory up to Spanners feels like the trio learning how to push and push and push at the wiredness of their grooves. I guess a counter-argument is that Spanners introduces stuff that sounds like a lot "straighter" and rather like a lot of the other IDM from the era (and Plaid Mk II continued to push that more syncretist sound), but I think they get the balance right on that album - a whole disc of "Psil-Cosyin"-style tracks would be exhausting...

Tim F, Saturday, 18 October 2008 04:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Well, I guess it's the abandoning of their Detroit via Sheffield sound they started out with in favour of what would eventually be more like what Plaid sounds like. Indeed the grooves got weirder and more experimental, sound design improved, but not necessarily for the better to me at least - too many ideas packed into too little space. Something about it just doesn't mesh well I find, doesn't keep my attention and moreover doesn't make me feel as much as, say, "The Clan (Mongol Hordes)" does.

Also, where's the love for Reload here? How I need a copy of A Collection of Short Stories. . .

Their time's limited, hard rocks, too (mehlt), Saturday, 18 October 2008 04:58 (fifteen years ago) link

'sharp shooting on saturn' from 'temple of transparent balls' is ridiculously gorgeous. think the black dog were kinda embarrassed at how pretty it is, hence the silly coda.

Picked up this yesterday: Dan Curtin - The Web Of Life.

Presented in mix format by a dj I've never heard of, this is still classic Curtain material i.e. lots of quirky acid squiggles and drum programming that could only be him. Definitely at the top of his game around this time.

sam500, Sunday, 26 October 2008 01:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i paid silly money for "web of life" ($30+ iirc) but it's definitely my favorite curtin disc

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 26 October 2008 03:07 (fifteen years ago) link

dan curtin is so amazing. you can't go wrong with "silicon dawn", "web of life", "art & science" or "deception"

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 26 October 2008 03:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, all good stuff. i get this feeling that dan curtain was listening to a lot of british hardcore/ jungle at this time - something about those uplifing pads he uses on some of these tracks. ahh... the good old days.
