SO GOOD

j. winters (josh), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

I saw her the other week and the show was a little disappointing but my hopes for this album are sky high anyway. This song rules.

Evan R, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 22:59 (seven years ago) link

both of these new tunes are pretty great

tylerw, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 23:00 (seven years ago) link

It's not grabbing me. I got really excited in the first minute but was hoping she'd open up her voice a bit. I like the departure from the last album but her vocals feel more restrained than they should be.

Benjamin-, Thursday, 30 June 2016 07:36 (seven years ago) link

Disregard me. Just jaded. Saw Kevin Morby and Big Thief earlier. Bored out of my mind. Austin is boring. I need to move back to Colorado.

Okay, I'm out.

Benjamin-, Thursday, 30 June 2016 07:39 (seven years ago) link

how am i just finding out about her :(

jason waterfalls (gbx), Sunday, 10 July 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

big thief rules

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 July 2016 19:48 (seven years ago) link

shut up kiss me is incredible but i will prob avoid her other stuff as i suspect it wont compete.

StillAdvance, Monday, 11 July 2016 11:49 (seven years ago) link

that's ridiculous
if you like one of her songs, you should listen to more of her songs

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 11 July 2016 12:45 (seven years ago) link

what other song would convert a newbie?

StillAdvance, Monday, 11 July 2016 12:57 (seven years ago) link

idk, she seems to have a whole new look/'tude with the video for that song
i guess it depends on what you like about it
i am not an angel olsen expert, maybe someone else has a better idea but i would suggest listening to songs from the new album if you like that one

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 11 July 2016 13:11 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

album is pretty great on first listen, especially love 'woman' and 'those were the days'

ufo, Saturday, 30 July 2016 05:51 (seven years ago) link

god "sister" fucks me up each and every time

j. winters (josh), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 02:37 (seven years ago) link

She tones down the gothic-Johnny Cash vibe of the last album, which was key for me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

you mean that like its a good thing or bad?

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Thursday, 11 August 2016 06:01 (seven years ago) link

It's not that it's a *bad* thing, but that Gothhy Cash vibe made her last record stand out from the pack for me. The new record is solid but doesn't reach the same heights as "Burn Your Fire".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 11 August 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

i love the new record. just pre-ordered it, actually, after hearing the leak. it is steadier paced and a bit less angry and depressing, so if that's not what you want then you might prefer her last one. but both are great imo.

davey, Thursday, 11 August 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

im going to get this thing anyways cos i am hooked like a goldfish on her thing but yep i liked the flashes of anger on burn your fire but i guess if you havent got any of it then you cant fake it

fuckin' A, I can't hardly wait for this album

Tell me who sends these infamous .gifs (bernard snowy), Saturday, 27 August 2016 13:14 (seven years ago) link

Now that's a song! Wow

niels, Saturday, 27 August 2016 23:38 (seven years ago) link

Is it her on lead guitar?

niels, Sunday, 28 August 2016 14:09 (seven years ago) link

i don't think so but her band is fantastic

ufo, Sunday, 28 August 2016 17:12 (seven years ago) link

the variety and slightly lighter overall tone on this new one makes it slightly disappointing for me - but i still think its a decent, listenable album i will continue to spend time with it even if it doesnt have the dark power of burn your fire

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Friday, 2 September 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link

the variety and slightly lighter overall tone

excellent!

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 2 September 2016 01:32 (seven years ago) link

not pretending to be a finely crafted review there just an off the cuff comment

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Friday, 2 September 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

i do think she is going for a broader kind of appeal with this one

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Friday, 2 September 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

no I'm legit excited for something lighter than the last one

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 2 September 2016 01:55 (seven years ago) link

New album can't come fast enough. Hearing the 2014 bore on my student station's MegaSEg for months has started to fuck with my sleep.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 September 2016 02:08 (seven years ago) link

right - i see - yep i got the record in the mail a couple of days ago so its early days but i def think it has a different tone from previous - i guess she is exploring different emotions this time around

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Friday, 2 September 2016 02:27 (seven years ago) link

"Woman" is an amazing track. Scorched closing guitar solo brings it home.

Ross, Friday, 2 September 2016 04:07 (seven years ago) link

it's much stronger than Burn Your Fire though i get that some would be disappointed in the lack of anything like White Fire etc.

it's one of my favourites of the year, Sister/Those Were The Days/Woman is an incredible run of tracks

ufo, Friday, 2 September 2016 04:43 (seven years ago) link

first listen to the whole album last night found it (and me) too scattered to form much of a coherent impression; giving it another go this morning & I think I'm liking it more

Tell me who sends these infamous .gifs (bernard snowy), Friday, 2 September 2016 12:16 (seven years ago) link

this record is really gorgeous and dynamic and I am psyched to finally totally enjoy one of her records

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 2 September 2016 13:54 (seven years ago) link

Where are you all streaming this? For some reason Apple Music doesn't have the whole album yet, even though it says it's out today

Evan R, Friday, 2 September 2016 14:01 (seven years ago) link

i bought it

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 2 September 2016 14:06 (seven years ago) link

buying this monday when local store gets it

niels, Friday, 2 September 2016 14:07 (seven years ago) link

so yeah this is sensational

Evan R, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:22 (seven years ago) link

This is excellent. It's streaming on Amazon Prime, I love it.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 2 September 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

Just tried this out. Couldn't make it past track 2. Just too much singing and the music isn't my cup of tea. I guess I was expecting something like Julia Holter or Laura Groves, both musicians I really enjoy. Maybe when I just want a generic rock record with female vocals i'll try it again.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 2 September 2016 23:05 (seven years ago) link

Sounds way better than the last one (which I was mostly lukewarm on, a few songs aside), based on one listen.

spastic heritage, Saturday, 3 September 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link

this still seems like mildly tasty layers of style (vibrato-laden ethereal vocals, lynchian guitar chords) laid over pretty weak songs

(sort of like lana del rey, actually)

wizzz! (amateurist), Saturday, 3 September 2016 00:29 (seven years ago) link

pretty weak might be too strong. just... mediocre.

wizzz! (amateurist), Saturday, 3 September 2016 00:31 (seven years ago) link

the songs on ultraviolence are tight

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 September 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link

it's too bad Olsen threw a bi of shade at LDR recently cause she could make good dough writing her some songs

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 3 September 2016 01:45 (seven years ago) link

I'm glad I'm not the only person who was reminded of Ms. del Rey at times

Tell me who sends these infamous .gifs (bernard snowy), Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:42 (seven years ago) link

Was not a fan of her last record but Sister in particular is just insanely great. Just has this intensity to it that I'm totally captivated by. Intern and Woman are also incredible.

octobeard, Saturday, 3 September 2016 03:06 (seven years ago) link

yeah this grabbed me pretty quickly on one distracted listen, i tried and tried with the last one and it never hit home. picking up a physical copy and i'll dig into it more after that.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 3 September 2016 03:08 (seven years ago) link

i don't hear any similarities to LDR

j. winters (josh), Saturday, 3 September 2016 03:52 (seven years ago) link

she's changed her singing style to be a lot breathier, is the main thing
