always see Charlie Mullins as one of those 'aggressive Christmas' people - their extensive decorations feel like they're up for most of the year.

"Up to 2,000 people were expected to gather in East Park, Southampton, to celebrate Eid - the end of the holy month of Ramadan - tomorrow and Tuesday. But organisers the British Bangladeshi Cultural Academy have cancelled the event after far-right groups threatened to hold a protest in the city following the EU referendum vote.
Members of the far-right PIE AND MASH SQUAD, who describe themselves as 'a group of people who love Pie n Mash and Britain the way it used to be', say they will hold a demonstration in the city.

Are there splinter groups that argue over with or without gravy?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 4 July 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link

it's all just horrible post-vice posturing, any gravy would be purely semiotic

UPDATE: Bexleyheath woman outraged after child who was with an illegal knife-seller 'poos' on pavement

idk why you would ever put mayo on a corned beef sandwich instead of butter but that fucking thing doesn't have either #brexit

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 14 July 2016 13:30 (seven years ago) link

They may as well have replaced 'No Mayo' with 'Vote Leave'

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 14 July 2016 15:22 (seven years ago) link

If being in the EU is responsible for the increasing ubiquity of mayo then maybe we did the right thing after all.

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 14 July 2016 15:30 (seven years ago) link

That sandwich is making me sad. Surely the only thing to do with corned beef is tomato and a lot of pepper. I liked them as a kid, squashed and heated on the windscreen of our family's car in a summer traffic jam.

I worked in Bromley for a year and there was a weird fetish there for corned beef and brown sauce sandwiches.

two weeks pass...

the famous "purple aki" (idk about this nickname) is in the news again:

Akinwale Arobieke, 52, approached well-built men in Manchester city centre, Trafford and Bolton and touched their arms or shoulders, prosecutors allege... He was jailed in 2003 for 15 charges of sexual harassment and on his release he was given a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO). It bans him from certain activities, including feeling a person's muscles or getting them to carry out 'squats' in public

― ogmor, Thursday, August 1, 2013 1:07 PM (three years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

β€œMr Arobieke has had, and continues to have, an interest in bodybuilding.

β€œHis interest extends beyond that which is legitimate and manifests itself in a way that we say is criminal.”

iirc he went to prison for manslaughter after someone ran away from him onto a trainline & was electrocuted

― ogmor, Thursday, August 1, 2013 2:08 PM (three years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

thats definitely crossing the line into transgressive bodybuilding

― Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, August 1, 2013 2:09 PM (three years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

theres something very northern or provincial about him, he seems to have a criminal and folkloric reputation over a large metropolitan area

yet i just cant imagine there being a lol purple aki equivalent in north london, he would simply be demonized but without any of the meta stuff

― Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, August 1, 2013 2:14 PM (three years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

and an east london equivalent would probably have been killed by now

― Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, August 1, 2013 2:15 PM (three years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

he is a living bit of folklore; i first heard about him in a pub & the way the story was told I didn't really expect it to be real, felt v strange to see it confirmed. photoshopping him into pics has become a bit of a meme in certain corners of the Northern Internet (tm)

Assuming you don't actually want grim suburban white flight / slum clearance realness, in which case idk Erith? - the walk from Stamford Hill in a straight line to the City is a reasonable microcosm of the capital imo, particularly if you stop in to talk to the Trinidadian pensioners in Stoke Newington Wetherspoons. Having left relatively recently, not much makes me more nostalgic. Everyone will have a different answer though.

A pint and game pie at the Royal Oak.

(let us know the days?)

I also recommend the Stamford hill>stoke newington>dalston>Shoreditch walk. It has a pretty decent slice of London cultures, between the Jewish, carribean, Turkish, Vietnamese and of course all us white hipster folk.

Also if you do journey this way, say hi.

Having just luckily and wisely dodged staying in Shepherds Bush for a 6 day stay, it seems to perverse to think about seeking real London. Be careful of what you wish for.

Shepherds Bush has never been the same since they closed down the Jamaican snooker club under the railway bridge where you could buy weed.

Instead, you could pay a visit to Maryon Park in Charlton - it's where they filmed Blow-Up, and you won't be far from famous soccerball stadium The Valley.

half the adverts made in london are filmed in beck road e8, where my sister lives: also throbbing gristle AND you've got foetus on yr breath were once based there (in different houses obviously)

plus it is right by london fields of martin amis fame, near where 23 skidoo had a studio if memory serves

the eel and mash shops have all moved further east sadly, as have the rag trade sweatshops (think they mostly moved to south east asia)

if you want a glimpse of the real london of the future head to any of the new developments along the river e.g. imperial wharf/chelsea harbour, battersea reach, 'riverlight' at nine elms, st george's wharf at vauxhall, pretty much anywhere east of tower bridge, and marvel at the huge and shiny apartment buildings, the well sculpted parks, the lack of amenities beyond a handful of chain restaurants, the absence of any life culture ambience vibrance or character. on the other hand, don't.

point of order, dear old Parting Anus did not actually set any of the eponymous book in the area of Hackney or London Fields itself, the action taking place entirely in Notting Hill and environs.
